So when the freedom of US citizens is finally reduced low enough so that terrorists no longer hate the US for its freedom, what will the terrorists hate the US for then?

tgregory: as long as they're strictly monitoring proposed terrorists who want to kill us, go for it. if they abuse the power, they should then be punished.

If they don't apply for warrants, how do we know whether or not they are abusing power? Get it?

HappyDaddy: I think you have no idea how expensive it is to defend scores of multi-district lawsuits, win or lose.

Maybe This (new window) will give you some perspective. We aren't talking about a couple of silly random claims that can be cheaply disposed of.

The cost is unimportant in this discussion. The cost of lack of oversight on government survelience is unacceptable.

Freedom is not free, nor is it possible with big brother watching.

Antimatter: rogersnowden: Never ceases to amaze me how those on the political left seem terrified of efforts to listen to foreigners talking to other foreigners-- as though we have given up some critical right-- but are perfectly happy to give up control of their bodies to the idea of government-run healthcare.

Big picture, folks. Big picture. Perspective.

Your pretty naive if you think the government is only listening to foreigners. They listen to everyone, monitor all internet traffic, probabaly datamine 100% of email, and numerious other invasive things, all without a warrent.

Based on that information, people are kidnapped, tortured, murdered, or imprisoned without trial or charge.

Thats a bit more important than socialized healthcare. We see the big picture, and aren't letting our fear blind us to thats really going on. The Government is doing some illegal, unethical, and inhumane things, all for 'freedom'.

Riiigghht, better adjust your tinfoil hat there bud. What in God's name would the government want with all that data? Where would they store it? Why would they store it? Can you imagine the bandwidth that would suck up?

Shall I supply what your ellipses omit? Ok - The Constitution, apparently yielding a body of interpretive law too complicated and obscure for casual, uneducated, inexperienced Farkers to comprehend, provides frequent fodder for self-righteous but ignorant commentary.

Sleeping Monkey That sucking sounds you hear, is the military industrial complex, at a rate of $1 billion/week. Get a clue.

No, that sucking sound you hear is well over 50% of the federal budget going to "entitlements" - cuz you know, people are entitled. Also, it's well over a billion a week (which is nice), because we're entitled to nothing without a strong military. More weapons or more welfare babies?...yep, I'm taking the weaponry.

I thought Bush and the Republicans are so adamant about the whole "fighting them over there" rhetoric that we're so much safer now than we were even pre-911 therefore I don't understand why the need of a national patriot act, multiple domestic anti privacy laws etc..(even if they are actually not effective)...

Here's a disturbing thought that sometimes occurs to me. When January 2009 rolls around, Bush will quietly disappear from the public eye. He will end his days fishing and playing golf with his excessive family money and all the kickbacks he'll receive from performing as he has done as the President.

Meanwhile, a noteable segment of the population will spend the rest of their time on this planet attempting to deal with the loss of a limb or general functionality. All subsequent generations will forever battle the inevitable fiscal fallout of the irresponsibility of this Administration. Our International ties will be nearly impossible to fully mend (if at all possible). People will die. People will suffer. People will starve. For a long long time.

And Bush will be playing 18 holes with his corporate buddies. Gawd life is so freakin unfair.

2008-02-28 11:01:42 AM
To the Americans in here rightly complaining about this...why aren't you guys at least organizing demonstrations? Seriously. Get your buddies out and picket something. Call the local news channel/paper and let them know of the date, time and location. They will cover it. If my government pulled this I'd be absolutely livid. I'm actually well enough upset that your government is doing this.

I've been asking this for years, but... How would you know they are strictly monitoring terrorists without any oversight? You do understand that most of us don't object to the monitoring of criminals, terrorists, etc. as long as the rules are followed and there is oversight to monitor for any abuses.

as a furriner, I can categorically say that the US media has nothing to do with the deep, fundamental, lack of respect that the world has for the American President these days. And our respect for the citizens of the US dropped pretty precipitously as well after you voted for this mouthbreather a second time.

Agreed, even one term of Bush is a global disaster, the 2nd just might have capped it off as the worst presidency in the history of the US. The rest of the world actually thinks the US media is too kind to the president if anything.

I've not seen a single plan for "government run healthcare" that would require anyone to use it. Anyone who wants more can opt to go somewhere else. It would just allow the working poor to see a healthcare provider without losing their home. On the other hand, if you don't want the government looking into your or your family's affairs, how do you opt out of that?
