Nobody was supposed to find out about the "turn Florida off" switch until we had to use it in earnest. Somebody's head needs to roll for letting the word out early.

LEAVE FLORIDA ALONE!!!

I remember someone predicting in the first thread that it would be funny if it turned out that all of Florida's power was controlled through a lightswitch. I'm rather disturbed that this might be the case.

Everything is fine as long as you leave it in the "ON" position.

They need to hire a new person to be in charge of the switch.

Unless the reports have changed, the blackout went farther north than they said. We live about 40 miles north of Daytona and our power went out during that time. I know it also went out as far north as St. Augustine, which is about 25 miles north of us, as that's where I was when the power died.

Florida tag, subby? How many of you are really surprised? That state is one drop away from being a disposed-of-tampon.

Oh, how long can trusty Cadet Stimpy hold out? How can he possibly resist the diabolical urge to push the button that could erase his very existence? Will his tortured mind give in to it's uncontrollable desires? Can he withstand the temptation to push the button, that even now, beckons him ever closer? Will he succumb to the maddening urge to eradicate history, at the mere push of a single button?
The beautiful shiny button.
The jolly candy-like button.
Will he hold out, folks? Can he hold out?

So that's what that extra switch in my dining room does. I didn't think it was connected to anything. Sorry bout that; I'll put some tape over it.

It's my fault. I thought The Clapper was hooked to the ceiling light instead of Florida.

If only we could convert the elderly and Cubans into pure energy, then Florida would be a paradise.

I call shenanigans. Of course they know what's going on. What we should be asking is, which member of Ocean's 14 is responsible, and what are they stealing, and are they going shoehorn another actress with a 10 body and a 4 acting ability into the movie?

A single point of failure in the electric grid causes a wide blackout...

Sounds like someone is testing just how much mayhem they can cause to the information infrastructure on command.

i live on the opposite coast of florida, north of ft myers, and my power went out for over 2 hours. i know someone 5 miles away and their power stayed on the whole time.

That's funny, I had thought it was connected to an old screw-in type fuse. I guess they upgraded to a switch.

Not so surprising. Wasn't the plane in the cinematic classic "Passenger 57" controlled by that one wire held on by a simple nut?

But seriously, I maintain the power system on our campus including a diesel generator, large UPS and the "smart-switching" equipment that starts the generator and disconnects us from the outside grid when it fails. The UPS is supposed to carry the load for only about five minutes until the genset is ready.
This system has failed five times in eight years now, and EVERY TIME it was a different, small, subcomponent that caused it in a slightly different course of events...
The folks in Florida just experienced the reality of Murphy's Law.

But this IS nuclear power, and in the hands of FLORIDA. I am just glad that it shut down like it was supposed to, and didn't blow everything up. As much as we all LOVE Florida, I'd hate to be a recipient of it's fallout.

This is pretty dire in the long term: everytime there's a massive power outage, there's a news story about 9 months later about a spike in births. What effect will this have on FARK headlines in 16-25 years?

Hmmm, yes, you may have something there.
