I remember the first time I started hearing about Obama as a contender was back before I left for Australia over a year ago. At the time, having only a cursory knowledge of him, I thought, Obama could never be the black candidate for president. For one, he is not African-American in the traditional American sense - that is a person who is descendant of the slave class who were shipped here to work in plantations.

Instead, Obama's father is an actual African who came to America on his own terms, which is in line with the idealized dream white Americans are accustomed too, of our ancestors arriving on these shores in search of liberty and opportunity. Just because his skin is black does not mean he is the same as the majority of black people in America.

If Obama had harped upon his kinship with other African-Americans too much, and used that as a basis, he would have succeeded only in alienating many African-American leaders as well as a lot of white voters intimidated by the idea of a black nationalism.

But he hasn't. And I credit him with it because it's so easy to tempt yourself into staking claim to short-term support. It's obvious to me that he's thought more about America than his opponents have. He's had to create a unique identity for himself in a way that Clinton, McCain, Huckabee, Giuliani, Edwards, etc. haven't ever.

Generations of immigrants have balanced their dual identities; Japanese-Americans, Ukranian-Americans, Pakistani-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Philippino-Americans, etc. When you group all of them together, they overwhelm the 'American-Americans', and it's become more and more evident with each election cycle.

Framing this election as between race and gender is spurious. What it really comes down to is old America versus new America. It has less to do with hard political issues as it does with a new electoral identity, which is why it's so ridiculous when pundits debate how Hillary Clinton could save her campaign. She can't.

She should apologize publicly and unreservedly for her support for the war in Iraq and her support for the USA-PATRIOT ACT.

Then she should pledge that in her first week as POTUS she would turn over Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, Rice, Perle, Bolton, Armitage, Abrams, and Libby to the International War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague and cooperate fully with the prosecutors' investigation into crimes against humanity.

That would be a healthy start, to be sure, but then she would get blamed for being too partisan, and a divider.

Oh, wait....

Your whole post was very interesting and I'd agree with all of it. I just picked this little blurb to make a point. I live in Toronto, and as many know, it's an extremely multicultural city. There are a lot of (insert random ethnic group here)-Canadians in the city. And, of course there are people that think that we're losing our "Canadian" way of life because of it. Though, increasingly, more people are seeing this isn't a big freakin' deal. In fact, it's counter-productive to cling to some form of isolationist idealized version of what you think your city or country should be about. Instead, enjoy all the great restaurants that'll pop up in your neighbourhood :)

I went to elementary school in Edmonton and at the time a lot of Sikhs and Koreans were starting to move in to the city. My grandparents have quite conservative leanings and fretted over Korean gangs and the isolation that the Sikhs imposed on themselves. But it's in our nature to want to be around people who are like us. All of my grandparents were first or second generation immigrants from Scandinavia, and when their families went to Canada, they settled areas that had others just like them. Everyone was a Lutheran, didn't like spicy foods and were good farmers. They assimilated and for all intents and purposes were Canadian. But their ideas about what the Canadian experience is would be very different from someone in Toronto, or Quebec. Yet, no one has a monopoly on what makes someone authentically Canadian.

The same is true here in America. There are many 7th generation Americans. Their impressions of what the American experience is are things like baseball, apple pies, pilgrims, blah, blah, blah. But that's all being displaced. It's not better and it's not worse, it's just part of a human migration that has been going on since the first human stepped out from the jungle and onto the sand.

Your right, that most people don't see this as a big deal anymore. Yet, when I talk to a lot of people I know, their impression is that even though they don't think it's a big deal, they believe that other people think it's a big deal. But I think that's starting to change.

There will always be tension when one group encroaches on another, but we handle it a lot better than we had before. Obama's candidacy is the logical conclusion to a lot of inroads that immigrants have made over several generations.

squat:That bastard is tough, you need 2 knights of the round + w summon + mimic + clouds omnislash and even then it's a toss up.

Not true. All you need to beat Emerald is:

Lvl 60
Cloud: W-Summon + Knights of the Round (4 Stars) and Mimic
Whoever: Mimic
Whoever: Mimic

and a couple of Megalixers just in case.

Emerald is really weak if you know what you are doing. His physical attacks are little to worry about. The only thing you need to worry about is his Aire Tam attack. Aire Tam does 1111 x (# of materia equipped) damage. So, with the above setup, the most damage he can do is 3333 to Cloud.

The moment the battle starts have Cloud W-Summon KotR and then everyone (including Cloud) mimics the rest of the battle. Using this method, it only takes 2 - 4 rounds to beat him. That's 2 - 4 attacks for Emerald, he usually waits a while to use Aire Tam, so you are safe.

See, had I known that his attacks were based on how much materia you had equipped I sure as hell wouldn't have loaded up on it. Since I did though the mimics were usually interrupted by someone dieing and then I was screwed. I guess you could say I used brute force to beat his ass, and I did beat him but it was frustrating as hell.

Ruby was easy though. Once you've beaten emerald give cloud the master materias and just reset the game until cloud is the only one left out of the three. Have final attack linked to revive and yer golden.

Shadow writer: However, this was around the time that blacks were saying that Obama was not black enough,

I know various media outlets reported that Obama was not "black enough" but I never believed it. What evidence suggested that black people would not vote for him? Did this speculation arise out of the fact that he doesn't fit into the hip-hop image? There are plenty of blacks that don't fit into the hip-hop image that are well respected within the black community. Did they take a small sample group and conclude he wouldn't get the black vote? Whatever the reason, if there was any truth to this, Obama wouldn't be garnering so much of the black vote as he is now. Whoever started this myth is completely out of touch.

Here is my advice to Hillary:

Stop pushing your divisive Uber-liberal agenda. Didn't you learn from the last presidential campaign? People in the middle are in the middle because they want a moderate, but Kerry was pushing the uber-liberal agenda and he lost just enough of those in the middle to lose it all.

People in the middle do NOT want universal health care, they just want a little more free health-care for kids and some revisions to the insurance industry to keep it from dominating the health-care industry. Also, while they want us out of Iraq, they don't want us out in only one year because they know it will be a massive CF if we try that. They are willing to wait a reasonable two to three years, and when you say you will get us out fast they think you are either lying or naive.

So basically you are too busy fighting for uber-liberals, who were already 50% for you, when you should be fighting for the votes of moderates who were 50% for you as well, but who there are twice as many of. Which means if you had gained 5% of the moderates in exchange for loosing 5% of the liberals you would have been ahead by 2.5%. Instead you did the opposite.

I'll never, ever, understand the vitriolic rage of American-Americans (see previous post for explanation) against universal health care. It's so irrational and whenever it's brought up, even with like minded people, some jackass always reflexively says, "Well, we can't have that."

I rarely hear serious arguments against it, and I know from experience that most people who oppose it haven't really thought it through.

However, you might want to rephrase yourself when you say, "people in the middle do NOT want universal health care, they just want a little more free health-care for kids and some revisions to the insurance industry to keep it from dominating the health-care industry." That cuts pretty close to the very thing you are saying so many people oppose.

We've latched on to this idea that a government provided health care (which we already pay for with our taxes) is the harbinger of socio-communism. What's worse is I've hear these arguments from people who struggle hard to pay the $300 a month for sub-par private insurance only to have to pay through their teeth for co-payments.

Germans have universal health care AND private insurance. So do Canadians. We're retarded for some reason. So STFU and think before you speak.

/goes for everyone else.

Obama won't get dick done if he's elected. Most of his views are too far to the left of even Hillary. He'll be blocked and filibustered to death. He isn't a cross-aisle guy, he's likable, but he's definitely not reaching across the aisle to get stuff done - why should he? If he wins, it'll be on the back of a brainless, lockstep lemming army. He'll be Bush on steroids.

Hillary won't get dick done, either. Mainly because she lacks one, but also because she is one of the most hated people in the US. Even people who used to like her are suddenly realizing all the stories about her are true.

I laugh when I read people comparing McCain to Bush. Up until a year ago, nobody would have done that. Then, when his campaign imploded 6 months ago, he released all the Bushbot assistance he had, and went back to relying on his gut instincts, the ones that served him so well for the last 27 years, and garnered him acceptance as an excellent cross-aisle legislator.

It's absurd to compare his achievements with the lack of achievements his potential opposition will have. Neither have the experience or depth of character. So, what will suffice to get Obama into the White House? Trash McCain as a "Bushbot". Yep...that'll work because there's no such thing as a "Obambot". Well, there is...but there's millions of them, and only one "Bushbot".

Boloxor the Insipid: Sadly I still expect that hillary will win the race. One of the Clinton's strategies has been to play 'underdog' and she has take up that role again. The 10 states she has lost can be made up in winning only a few large states.

Not quite. She would have to win those states by wide margins in order to catch up to him in delegates. Otherwise, the delegates will be very nearly split. At present, the race is a dead heat in Texas and Obama is closing the gap in Ohio and Pennsylvania, therefore a Hillary blowout is highly unlikely. And, in the case of Texas, she could win the popular vote but lose the caucus; therefore Obama would be awarded more delegates from that state.

Socialism isn't evil. It simply does not work. I've seen too many cases where Socialized Healthcare marginalizes everyone's care. It's not *always* the case. In fact, some countries manage to do it *well*. But that's because Sweden and Norway and Iceland care about the health of their people more than they care about saving money. They don't worry about saving money. They pay plenty of taxes to have such awesome healthcare.

However, what they're doing right is not Socialism. What makes their system work is that they CARE FOR THEIR PEOPLE. Let me make this plainly clear: It doesn't matter what system you use. If the people in charge of the system don't care about everyday people, no system will meet the needs of all people because systems are about marginalizing everyone into categories. One size fits all. If the people DO care, then no matter the system, it will work.

Now problem with these wonderful countries is: Lack of freedom of religion.

I don't particularly think that the Canadian healthcare is very effective because I have too many friends who slip through the cracks. And American health care? It's completely broken.

Hillary wants to make universal health care MANDATORY and even GARNISH WAGES to force you to sign up for healthcare. That is a STATIST and FASCIST viewpoint. That is way further left than Obama. (But not a lot further left than McCaine because he too is a statist.)

The REAL solution? 1) Have the US Government cover hospitals' *expenses* for health care provided to all those who cannot afford medical bills or even health insurance. This does not cover the hospital's profit, only the expenses including pay of staff. A tax write-off isn't enough. If you can't pay for your healthcare, the government pays 100% of the hospital's cost, not the patient's cost. 2) Completely deregulate the Healthcare Insurance industry. Remove all constraints. 3) Give hospitals grants paid by the us government if at least 25% of their patients are treated for free because they cannot pay. A realistic sliding scale would be nice. 4) Reward Insurance companies for doing the right thing such as always covering what they claim to cover, covering all necessary procedures required by a physician even if not covered under original plan, with of course added expense, 5) deregulating hospitals so they can increase their prices to insurance companies for being so hard to deal with, yet bring prices down for those who can actually afford to pay cash, and 6) deregulate the medical supplies and drug company industries and give hospitals and doctors free reign to choose whose products and services they will use based on their own ethical standards.

Never gonna happen.
