Great headline subby. I got the shot and the flu.

2008-02-21 10:26:08 AM
I had to get a flu shot every year while in the military and every year got the flu, the in bed can't move for a week variety.

Haven't gotten a shot since I left the military 3 years ago. Haven't gotten the flu once in those 3 years and I have little ones.

I'm am thoroughly convinced these shots are not necessarily the preventive measure they are purported to be.

Anyone know if they'll be considering the "just start over" option?

2008-02-21 10:26:53 AM
Well, lets hope they do a better job this year, because the flu they told everyone they were going to get this year didn't happen, and instead we got some really bad flu that had me out a week and my secretary is going on 3 weeks now.

I'm at home sick with the flu since last week, so I'm really getting a kick out of your replies.

But in all seriousness, this has to be one of the worse I've had in years.

I didn't get the shot because I no longer believe in it, 3 years in a row, and I always caught it anyways. This year, my wife and the kids had the shot, and guess what... we are all getting it (one of the kids brought it back from school).

I'm hoping for the Fark cliche flu. Contracted from chronic masturbating, its symptoms include sharp knees, gold blotches around the mouth area, redness in one eye, blindingly white teeth, the feeling of repeatedly getting a kick, and uncontrollable golf clapping. May be fatal to kittens.

Since this is fark, I clicked on the link expecting it to be a link to the Fed meeting to discuss a rate cut. I guess the oil price headlines are taking their effect on my fark link expectations.

It's 2008, is the US even trying to find a new way to make flu vaccine other then 1950's technology and takes half a year to make. I heard a few years back some European company had made some vaccine sans eggs back when bird flu was all the rage in the media, but nothing since.

Back in my day, we didn't have flu shots. The flu killed a few old people every year. Still does.

You sure it wasn't some shiat like in that movie Jacobs Ladder? My platoon got "flu shots" just before went to Bosnia, I wasn't with them at the time, so I went to get my shot a little later on that day and when I went to the TMC I was told "I don't know what your platoon got, but there isn't any flu serum in Scwheinfurt. I tried to avoid as many shots as I could after that.

So do you have a flu on top of it? Or is this just the 3rd time this season you stayed in bed doped up on nyquil?

They do this to weed out the old farts from nursing homes to make room for the new tenants. The Flu seems to be the best method.

As someone who caught a horrible flu while on their honeymoon in Hawaii last week (and flew home to Seattle while sick), I'm really getting a kick out of these replies . . .

I'm pretty sure I have a variant of the H1N1 (spanish) flu, and it's totally knocked me on my ass. I've bed/couch ridden for the past 8 days, and I'm experiencing the worst respiratory symptoms I've ever experienced. Most mornings, after I wake up, I begin coughing so hard that I begin to vomit. My nose is constantly bleeding, my eyes are sealed shut with 'gunk' and I can barely hear out of which ever ear I sleep on. I know, too much info, but this flu is something else. I actually now understand how and why people would die from this.

The docs put me on steroids to help me breathe and given me a prescription for cough syrup with codeine. If I could have gotten to them earlier (within 3 days of symptoms showing), they would have put me on tamiflu.

Here's data from the CDC about the current spread (new window). If you take a look, it's technically been in epedemic status for the past three weeks, and about 8% of all deaths right now are attributed to the flu. Scary stuff.

/time to sleep again
