Regardless of whether Memphis wins this game or not, they are a paper tiger (ha!) who will be exposed come tournament time. I heard this weekend that UAB took them to the wire. This is the same UAB team that lost to (now 10-16) Wichita State earlier in the year. I know transference is a dangerous game to play in sports, but if you're being tested by teams that lost to Wichita State (this year), you have no business making your Final Four plans.

I'm not a Memphis fan, but if you are saying they aren't a final four team for ALMOST lost a game to a team that lost to another crap team earlier in the pre-conference season... don't buy any spaces in the office pool.

I know, right? Not unlike Kansas's win over a USC team that lost to 11-15 Mercer. ;)

I was at the UAB-Memphis game and it supported what I had heard was their glaring weakness... free throw shooting. They are pretty terrible from the line and that is the kind of problem that really gets teams in trouble during the tourney. All it takes is a close game with a group of ref who call the game tight and they could be going home early.

Agreed. This is college basketball after all. Anybody can beat anyone else on a given night. Hell, my UK Wildcats suck this year, but own victories over #2 Tennessee and #16 Vanderbilt, the same Vandy team that shellacked us last week by 41.

I won't put Memphis in my Final Four. Not because I don't think they're a good team, but because they haven't been playing quality opponents every week like other conferences. I think they will struggle to play multiple tough games in the NCAA Tournament.

This weekend will show me a lot, could even make me change my mind. We'll see.

Having grown up in Wake Forest (the town, not the school), graduated from UNC, attended grad school at NCSU, and worked at Dook, I can definitively say that Dook does suck. The medical services are first-rate, though.

This Jayhawker is completely buying what Memphis is selling. I really don't want to play them in the tournament. That offense is based on our biggest weakness: dribble penetration.

That being said, if Memphis is to be taken down, it'll be their 3 point shooting that does them in more than their free throws.

I'm sure it wasn't the media that made these two teams one and two to boost ratings for the game of the week.

Because Memphis hasn't been number one for five weeks now, after being in the top three the entire season.

And I'm also sure it's not because UT has won when every other team in front of them lost, pushing them all the way up from 8 (I think) to 2.

Don't worry, if I was from Indiana I'd be bitter, too.

Jesus Christ, if there was one fan I'd pick dead last to talk about tournament performance, it would be a damn Kansas fan. You guys are notorious for falling apart like wet paper towels come tourney time.

And we beat UAB, the closest thing you can call a conference rival. Didn't you expect them to put up a fight against the number one team in the country? How did KU fare against their rival K-State? At least we won our game, goober.

I'm sorry. Kentucky sucks last time I checked. Wake did a great job, but Duke's still in the Top 10. Ultimately, it's still early. Wait until the ACC tourney.

Memphis reminds me of Oklahoma football... run through a crappy schedule (especially in-conference), win a bit in the postseason, and then fold against the first great opponent you play in the biggest game of the year thusfar (maybe, if they're lucky, this year the Final Four, but I won't even give them that much credit yet).

You must have checked early in the season. While they're not Kentucky of a few years ago, they don't necessarily suck. Sure, they got raped by Vandy, but that happens occasionally.

The whole season. C'mon. Yeah, the Wildcats have had a good February. But look at the whole picture. I look forward to seeing Western Kentucky in March, however.

Memphis made all the right moves given the hand it was dealt: It plays great non-conference games (Georgetown, Arizona, USC, UT) to make up for the fact that it will blow through it's conference. And as far as folding, the past two years they were put out of the tournament by a team that went to the Final.

I mean really? Comparing the Big 12 to CUSA?

Pac 10 best conference in NCAA, when it comes tourney time. Im calling at least 4 in the sweet 16. UCLA, Stanford, My Washington State, and the up and down USC. All very good teams. Throw in ASU and U of A and thats a hell of a tough conference. This is my opinion though, you may disagree. Actually it's fark. of course you will

They should see nothing but zones in the tourney. They looked like absolute crap in two games at MSG earlier this season against the zone, and with their lack of quality shooting they are begging to lose a 54-50 game in the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 round.

I can't see them winning it all.

KU ranks fourth in NCAA Tournament appearances, with 36. Kansas is also ranked fifth in NCAA Tournament victories, with 73. They've been to the Final Four 12 times. The last one was in 2003.

Memphis has been in 19 tourneys and has been to the Final Four twice. The last one was 1985.

Where do they rank in "times they've earned a #1 or #2 seed only to be knocked out before the Sweet 16"?

According to my annual brackets, they must be near the top.

I'm not saying that they don't choke, (Rhode Island about ten years ago comes to mind, along with Syracuse), but the fact remains that they are a consistent winning team, even in the tourney. They've been to the Elite 8 twice under Self, but also have suffered two first round losses.

So don't pick them in your brackets this year. Pick Kansas State.

"Anyone else" raises his hand. Pretty cool tour of duty, there, kbarham.

I'd love to see them bring back the (re-named) Dixie Classic as a Christmas holiday tradition in NC, playing exhibition games rotating annually between Greenville, Raleigh, and Charlotte. Of course, the ACC would never allow a mini-ACC tournament like that, and the coaches would probably object because of the prospect of injury so close to the start of conference play, but it's fun to speculate about. NC fans would absolutely eat it up.
