What. We have tons of mountains in the South Mountain Reservation. You'll feel right at home. There's skiing too, somewhere up there in North Jersey. We have skiing in Central Jersey, but it's illegal and involves putting things in your nose.

Well, I'm of two minds over your responses to me, thus far. On one hand, it's only natural that I would pity anybody who mires themselves in ignorance and fails to know a better place when they see it.

On the other hand, it would be a disservice to my family, my neighbors and myself to encourage more of your kind into this region. Much like watching a particularly stupid squirrel dart out onto the highway, I must temper my pity with the knowledge that this is simply nature's way.

The important consideration is what part of Jersey City you're moving to. Anywhere near the Grove St. PATH station is actually pretty nice, my sister used to live there. Between JFK and Garfield, not so much.

I'll be in Rahway. I've already been out to MRL and the area was actually fairly nice. The run downparts on Newark didn't look any worse than the run down parts of Denver. On the other hand what you guys call mountains, we call the foothills. Lots of great historical sites to explore it seems.

When I was a kid, Newark was one of the worst cities in America. Car jacking was rampant, and drug use was everywhere. But today, its really not that bad. No worse then any other city with a moderate level of poverty. And north Newark is mostly Hispanic. I lived there for a while. I'd recomend going to Flambo's to see live Puerto Rican music if you are there on the weekends.

Rahway is slowly by slowly becoming gentrified. Lots of expensive white people condos going up, especially near the train station. 40 min ride to NYC, under an hour to Trenton, and just under 90 to the beach in Belmar.

rahway? you're fine. very decent area, can be somewhat expensive, and easy to get to anything from there. nj has some efficient public transportation

Yes I have, more often than I'd prefer. My opinion stands.

It's really not bad, but regardless you are in for a culture shock. Learn that honking is not a shooting offence like it is everywhere else. South Central Jersey is very nice (stay away from Toms River). I lived in Morris county (Lake Hopatcong, west NJ, mountains etc.) when I transfered out there. The commute to Ft. Lee was a nightmare, but the area was nice. I lived in Jersey City after that as it was only slightly easier to get to work, but much easier to get in NYC. I think if I could have swung the cost I would have lived in Morristown.

I think the worst thing about my first year in NJ wasn't the traffic, but the crazy ass viruses that I picked up from god knows where. You have people from every corner of the world trying to infect you in the elevator with some random strain that your immune system has never seen.

What's Piscataway like? I've got a couple of applications into Rutgers, and am curious in case I get an invite to come out there and interview...

NJ is not a bad place. It's not dirty. Crime's down, you actually see people walking down the street. I live right by Branchbrook Park. Which has the nation's highest collection of cherry blossom trees other than DC. I never understood why people call NJ dirty.

rutgers is indeed a great school. i went to the newark campus and frequented the new brunswick campus. very nice area down there, traffic can be hell, but the school has its own bus system.

I should note those are applications for an assistant professor position, not as a student, so I'd actually be living there for a while :) I've heard bad things about NJ in general, but I learned a long time ago that every state has its good and bad areas.

I didn't mean it in a Newark kind of way, Toms River is the epicenter of bizarre happenings. Every time you see some messed up story from NJ it's Toms River.

I'm the cable guy and I have to say some of the nicest views of Central Jersey can be seen from Tewksbury or just up the hill from Lebanon Boro. Washington's Rock is nice, but sometimes I'll be driving around and come around a bend and all you see is most of central Jersey and on a clear day you can just make out New York. Tons of horse farms and parks too.

I like it here.

i grew up in lebanon boro, that town lives up to just about every small town standard that you can think up.

NJ: more than the turnpike and a couple smoke stacks

I have been thru some nice areas in NJ. Route 94 thru Vernon and Sparta Twps looks pretty darn pleasant. I take it south to I-80 when driving cross country and hitting the Poconos and their traffic is a palpable psychic letdown.

Then again, I have time after time found individual Jerseyites, particularly professionals and small business owners close to NYC, to be arrogant, presumptuous, and appallingly easy to piss off.

And yes, that's compared to NYC proper, Long Island and Westchester. Sorry, North Jersey, you take the nastycake. Hope you're proud.
