W. T. F? Happy Gilmore ranked higher than Caddyshack, Hoosiers, and The Natural? And Cool Runnings and Jerry Maguire in the top 10? WTF!

These people are retarded.

Also, list needs Big Wednesday and/or Endless Summer.

No love for Diggstown :(

Perhaps my memory of it is coloured by the rosy-tinted glasses of youth, but I thought this was a great boxing movie - especially the twist at the end :D

-1 for not including Miracle
+1 for fitting all 50 on one page

IMDWalrus 2008-02-15 07:23:22 AM

"Miracle" is definitely better than some of the choices for that list.

Miracle sucked. How can you have a hockey movie and not mention Canada?

2008-02-15 11:10:55 AM
The fact that Cool Runnings made it - let alone top 15 makes this list one of the worst I have ever seen.

Sarcasticus: Miracle sucked. How can you have a hockey movie and not mention Canada?

I dunno, probably because it was about the US hockey team? Just a guess though.

Breaking Away, easily a top-10 sports movie, is ranked at #37, below that piece of tripe Rollerball? Shenanigans.

It is about IU, so the list make probably thought that it would be too scandalous to list it any higher.

/There is nothing little about Grand Prix ;)

Damn college kids, always keeping The Cutters down!

Oh geez, Personal Best. Good times when that one was on Showtime during my youth.

I'm going to bring a globe of pure cheez: North Shore. It's terrible! It's no Big Friday, Endless Summer, or Riding Giants, but I like the message.

The documentary, Dog Town & Z-Boys, should be included here too.

2008-02-15 11:22:49 AM
Can't argue with Raging Bull but Bull Durham should have been higher on the list.

how did miracle not make the list

and how did happy gilmore beat out caddyshack

Tripper64: The documentary, Dog Town & Z-Boys, should be included here too.

I don't necessarily consider that a sport, but I agree it's an excellent movie. MUCH better than that Hollywood treatment a few years later.

I'm thinking of a movie.

was it good?

It had its moments.

Cool Runnings!

I just want to express my intense burning hatred for A League of Their Own which some channel I have feels obligated to show every week and my (normally sane) wife feels obligated to watch ... every week.

List is missing Sandlot and Water Boy.

/ who am I kidding? Most sports movies suck.

Victory! FTW

Loved that movie as a kid.

2008-02-15 11:45:07 AM
List doesn't have Brian's Song, but has Cool Runnings at 10? this guy is a farking idiot. List is invalid.

2008-02-15 11:48:21 AM
The top three are the correct top three, but 2 & 3 should be switched.

The rest of the list is hit and miss...mainly hit, I guess.

list is inadiquite without:
Space Jam, Rookie Of The Year, Cool Runnings, the Sandlot (being a kid in the 90's was farking awesome)

I hope you're kidding. Cool Runnings was on there though, but Rookie of the Year? Really? Next you'll be arguing the merits of Air Bud

The list mentions Brian's Song four times, but excludes it from the list.

EPIC FAIL.

TDUsGamer: The list mentions Brian's Song four times, but excludes it from the list.

Maybe because it was a TV movie. That's the only possible excuse.

I got this far then quit reading:

A SURPRISING entry in our chart, but enough of you must either be or have once been 15-year-old boys to vote this feel-good 1989 flick on to the threshold of the top 40. In a sort of baseball version of Brewster's Millions or The Producers, Rachel Phelps, a former exotic dancer whose wealthy husband didn't survive much past saying "I do", takes control of his club, the Cleveland Indians, and begins to run it into the ground.

She hates the stadium, the fans and the climate in Milwaukee and wants to move the club to Florida, but she can only do that if attendance slumps. So, she decides to build the worst ragtag bunch of no-hopers in baseball, including Sheen as Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn, who earns his moniker for the inaccuracy of his pitching rather than his hell-raising. You can probably guess where the plot is heading, but predictability is not always a barrier to popularity. As well as Sheen, Russo and Wesley Snipes saw their careers take off after this. Sheen was actually not a bad pitcher in real life and had been offered a baseball scholarship at the University of Kansas.

In a sort of baseball version of Brewsters Millions...WTF wasnt Brewsters Millions about Baseball players?

Secondly she hates the stadium, fans and climate in Milwaukee? The movie was filmed in Miwaukee but takes place in Cleveland! They are the Cleveland farking Indians, how do you et it that wrong.

Didnt read any further this article sucked...

Why the hell isn't gladiator on this list?

no love for blue chips?

the sandlot not being on this list is blasphemy

2008-02-15 12:37:20 PM
ongbok: North Dallas 44 should be on that list. The scene when Nick Nolte and Mac Davis are sitting in the weight room drinking a six pack and smoking while everybody else is working out is classic. Also a Beautiful Boxer is a great movie.

North Dallas Forty, and I came here to say the same..

Again, Miracle

Mystery Alaska

2008-02-15 12:43:20 PM
What about:
"Back to school" (diving)?
"Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" (enduro racing)?
"Alive" (rugby)?

2008-02-15 12:49:33 PM
Suprised no one has mentioned the 2nd best hockey movie (behind Slapshot), Youngblood!

Slapshot was such a great movie, they should make a sequel...I mean I'm really surprised that nobody has yet.

/I wouldn't put any Baldwins in it though

2008-02-15 12:51:19 PM
My favorite sports movie: Alive.

Most of the jocks die and or eat each other.

Sarcasticus: Miracle sucked. How can you have a hockey movie and not mention Canada?

If Canada wanted a mention in Miracle then maybe they should have won the 1980 gold medal.

Caddyshack was about golf, so it's not a valid addition to a list about sports/athletes flicks.

A long time ago, in the early days of Showtime, there was a movie called The Club, about Australian Rules Football. I remember that being pretty good. A helluvalot better than Any Given Sunday, anyway.

Ok I'll give you that one but I better not see any fishing movies in here then.

'Color of Money' and 'The Hustler'? I mean, those are phenomenal movies, but pool is even less a sport than golf!

2008-02-15 01:15:34 PM
8 Seconds didn't make the list? Sad.

Seriously, it was a great movie, even if Luke Perry's career fell apart afterwards.

An English sports moive fan list. Interesting.

Glad to see Tin Cup get some love. "Umm, err...aww, sh*at Roy, I didn't know you were talkin' about me!"

Would like to include, as some others have:

Bloodsport ("Chong Li's sweet in da gut!"), Murderball, Dogtown, Endless Summer, Necessary Roughness (Robert Loggia makes for a great def. coordinator), The Sandlot, Teen Wolf (that last game is pure '80s), Friday Night Lights (Derek Luke was Boobie), Waterboy, Cutting Edge ("You want me to put my hands where"?), Without Limits, Love & Basketball, Diggstown, The Program ("You'll never be half the man ya momma was!"), Karate Kid, Vision Quest, White Men Can't Jump and 2 huge omissions, Brian's Song and Longest Yard.

/would like to see a list of greatest sports scenes regardless of movie genre; ex. The football game in MASH

2008-02-15 01:18:56 PM
Cool Runnings?!?

Mystery Alaska and Miracle should have made the list.

/I didn't know taking hostages at the Olympics was now a sporting event

2008-02-15 01:22:49 PM
"Field of Dreams" ahead of "the natural"

Rocky 3 not even in the top 25?

/FAIL!
