Everyone says this in Hollywood. What they mean is, "I want to play a character with some manner of socially acceptable neuroses or terminal illness that will make the Academy swoon."

You can't make $300 million action spectaculars, then make something like "Mr. Magorium," and still hope to have any sort of indie cred.

You have it the other way around... Nichols filmed topless scenes of her, then she pressed to have them removed, after agreeing to film them in the first place. Which, out of all the roles where nudity may or may not have been entirely plot driven, actually would have made that scene better (and not just for the obvious reason).

Evie in the V for Vendetta graphic novel is written as a prostitute. Portman got to play her as some kind of assistant/tea lady.

As intelligent as she must be with her education, half of the time I see her on the telly in interviews and such, she comes off incredibly vacant.

The only time I remember her saying anything of note was her rather dismissive/disgusted response to Spielberg's Munich, but even that seemed half-hearted.

I'm wicked smahhht and a nice guy, and in Fark threads I come off as a preening, ignorant git. But it doesn't affect my day job.

Point being, she doesn't need to be Pablo Neruda for people to come see her movies; she just has to keep the upskirt-limo shots and rehab visits to a bare minimum, and she'll pass for brainy-sophisticated just fine when it counts. Good for her for being smart enough to know that.
