It is Darwin Day after all.

"The sheer stupidity of cutting through power cables should be glaringly obvious to everyone."

Well it must not have seemed too obvious to him.

Or maybe he was just celebrating Darwin Day a little early.

I don't think he thought his cunning plan all the way through..

FTA: "Engineers found a hacksaw embedded in a live 11,000 voltage cable with a lit blowtorch nearby after being called to Creswell late on Saturday night."

"The thief left their (sic) tools behind so we can only assume they left in a great hurry or they were injured and were dragged away by an accomplice."

You just can't make this up.

This is so close to being so-full-of-good.

Perhaps (not sure) a thief doesn't deserve the death penalty. But being this stupid makes this character deserving. AND - He voluntarily offers to do it himself - By electricution no less!

But, alas, he's even a failure at that. I hope Darwin takes care of him before society has to spend a lot of money on it.

The power companys should really label their equipment so this sort of thing doesn't happen again. The poor saps were only trying to make a decent living reselling some surplus cable - and they end up seared like bacon. I smell a lawsuit..well... it is America

This is what happens when you are too lazy to work. In this case it killed him. I knew a guy that spent all day breaking up auto transmissions with a sledgehammer to separate the steel from the aluminum for the scrap. Needless to say, he put in a good days work to get about $20. Some people work harder at not working than they would if they had a real job. Too lazy to work, too stupid to live in this guys case.

2008-02-12 09:30:09 AM
This kind of thing is happeneing all over the place. Copper scrap is going for big $$ now, so people are going to great lengths to steal it. Theres a big problem with air conditioner thefts here in FL right now. They just steal your whole unit, take it somewhere and pull the copper out of it.

2008-02-12 09:30:16 AM
This is fine, it weeds out the weak and stupid. Darwin does indeed approve.

Darwin day has barely been going on for nine hours, clearly this idiot wanted to front-load it.

My dad was in charge of security for a local power company. He used to get calls ALL THE TIME about people stealing copper cable from live circuits.

The worst one I remember was a guy similar to the one in the article. He cut into a live power line that supplied about half of the city of Buffalo. The power was so strong that he immediately cooked, his body water superheated, and he exploded from the internal pressure. Think of a popcorn kernel, same principle. Big mess, lots of cleanup and paperwork.

Remember people its the AMPS not the VOLTS that kill you. Car batteries are 12 volts and will kick your ass, because they carry upwards of 150 to 200 AMPS. Your house by comparison has a 100 AMP service for the WHOLE HOUSE. If you want to know how dangerous a circuit really is remember this formula:

VOLTS x AMPS = WATTS

That is what your power company sells you - WATTS, or KILOWATTS (thousands of WATTS).

/yes I am a nerd
//Yes, I also know that 10,000 VOLTS would likely kill you at any AMPERAGE.

Sultan Of Herf: Theres a big problem with air conditioner thefts here in FL right now.

I was a commercial HVAC tech for a few years, and I experienced this on a service call one time.

Me: Well, sir, I found your problem. Your condenser coil on the roof is gone. Someone stole it. In fact, they stole every condenser coil off every air conditioner but one.

Customer: Can you get it working again?

Me (channeling Lumbergh from Office Space): Yeaaaaaaah. Um, I'm gonna have to say no on that one. See, the thieves basically destroyed your unit getting it out. That, and I can't in good conscience* sell you a replacement coil for a 20 year old unit. Hey, but here's my card -- I'll get our salesman in contact with you this afternoon with a price on a new unit! Can you sign here, please?
---

The one unit that wasn't touched? It had a sign on it that read "This unit protected by 10,000 volt security system." I got a good laugh out of that one. HVAC contractors in FL must be banking on unit replacements (and stealing them later ... there are a lot of crooked a/c contractors like that).

*True statement, as I do have a conscience, but I also made a commission on equipment sales.

I think the legal precedent (in the UK anyway) is that if it's up the top of a pylon or buried underground, it's reasonable to assume it's live. Persons digging have a legal responsiblity to scan for cables before digging.

I did work in the 1990s for a large chemical works where there were live (but insulated) 11 kV cables accessible from ground level. One day, some entrepreneurs came onto site to steal the cable, and ended up dead. The Health and Safety Executive ruled that the site hadn't made sufficient effort to keep undesirables out, so six miles of new razor-wire fencing had to be installed around the perimeter. I guess there probably was a pay-out to the relatives of the dead guys.

It is not uncommon for automotive ignition systems to produce 50,000 volts. But it is a short duration and low amperage.

BlackKnightThat is what your power company sells you - WATTS, or KILOWATTS (thousands of WATTS).

Actually, your power company sells you energy. That is why they charge you by the kilowatt-hour. Power X Time = energy. 1kW*1hr = 3.6*10^6 J

I know a guy that took 40kV across the chest. He's still alive and well. It didn't kill him because it was low current.

If he was doing it any time in the last twenty years he was taking home more like $200.00 a day. About 20 pounds of aluminum in a transmission at the least, I could whack out five a day, pick up the recycler's chit for separating them AND sell the scrap cold in four hours. EXTRUDED aluminum goes higher than pop-cans, like $2.00 per pound.

Who's stupid now?

we had a sales girl at the computer store get whapped with the highside charge of a 300watt power supply. That's a thousand volts MAYBE half an amp. The supply tripped the ground-fault.

She went all the ways you can go bad but dead. It even turned off her tummy like a good traumatic shock.

It's not the voltage or the amperage per say... it's whether your heart is touching the tissue around it when it runs through your body.

And somebody say hi to Gordon for me.

I'm not the only person who thinks that the fact you were committing a felony, at least if you're an adult, should remove your ability to file lawsuits for negligence, am I?

I'd guess the perpetrators' last names were Howard and Fine...but I am pretty sure the Stooges never stooped to anything against the law.
