Tatsuma: voodoohotdog: Put the brush away tough guy.

I said it was a collective worldview, not that they all held that view. How does that make me a tough guy, by the way? There is a prevalent anti-Americanism feeling in certain parts of the Canadian society, especially the left-wing. That's a fact.

ComicBookGuy: Well, I don't believe we have many rules on this website. There are SOME...but an academic debate society this ISN'T.

It isn't?!

We aren't!!

It's not so much anti-Americanism as it is a dislike of certain qualities America seems to be encouraging, like the decline of education, the militarism, jingoism, etc.

The vast, vast majority of Canadians see our countries as brothers. And we see our brother hitting it rich, and then collapsing into an orgy of drugs and violence fueled by that wealth. We don't have an issue with the wealth, we have an issue with the damage you're doing to yourselves.

Tatsuma

I believe that part of it is cultural. Canadians, especially Ontarians, Quebecois and BCers, really hold a collective worldview that America is baaaaaaaaaaaaad. Very very baaaaaaaad.

Isn't this thread supposed to be about not judging the whole of society for the actions of a few? Isn't that what you're doing right now, Tatsuma? Rhetorical evidence does not a good argument make. At least that's what my many Canadian girlfriends tell me.

Besides, those provinces are ripe with big cities and universities. The people there can't rebel against our government (they don't really do much of anything, bad or good) so they rebel against yours. You'd find the same kind of anti-government sentiment in New York, California, or Massachusetts.

heavymetal: TheBogie69: If you're going to kill cartoonists, start with whoever writes Marmaduke. That comic just blows.

Kill whoever writes Cathy first. Cathy is the FARK TV of comic strips.

No, I must disagree. Cathy, while never actually being funny per se, has in it the tiniest element of humor still visible to the naked eye. i would rather be forced to read a thousand Cathy anthologies, than to endure "The Comic Whos Name Must Not Be Spoken" ( click if you dare, SFW, not for brain ) (pops)

/Still there is another.. more unspeakable evil, fortunately now gone from this Earth. It rose up from the depths of anti-humor, and ... well, never actually rose up. It pretty much stayed in the realm of anti-humor until it imploded upon itself, thereby saving the universe.
// and somehow its author went on to be the Editor of The once funny, now not-so-much, Onion

Collective world view?

No you didn't You said "Canadians, especially Ontarians, Quebecois and BCers,". You named them. Signed sealed delivered. I really don't care that much but it's just like saying "men don't read instructions or ask directions." Generalizations just trivialize your statement.

And Tough Guy is what I call everybody. Don't get your yarmulke in a twist.

I'm glad we came around to "But...but...Christians!!1!" here at the end, because it's a worthwhile point here. You can't generalize a whole group of people by what a crazy sect does. I'm a Christian but I think that the Westboro Baptist Church is full of evil, horrible people who should be stopped.

So mightn't Muslims be the same? Some bad people do things in the name of their religion that some other members of that religion think are horrible? So maybe shouldn't we not make hateful generalizations about "Muslims" and instead focus on the people who actually wanted to kill a cartoonist?

liam76:

Read the Koran. Now try and find a me a religious text that commands all followers to slay or subdue those that don't follow it. Find me a religious texts that tells of a day when you will wipe out another religion. I am not talking about stories where god or a religious figure did some bad stuff I am talking about a direct command to commit genocide. There are many muslims who are great people and just ignore these parts, but unfortunately most muslims, when questioned, will tell you that the Koran is the word of god and it is all sacred.

So I actually did read the Koran, or actually I only got through the first third or so. It seemed pretty much on par with the old testament as far as violence towards other religions were concerned. Essentially what I got out of it, is an extreme amount of paranoia. Something like: "Everyone else is against you, they don't accept Allah, you must fight them for the glory of Allah." Genocide was not explicitly commanded as it is in the Old Testament, but I may not have gotten to that part yet.

Actually the thing that bothered me the post was the quote about that you should beat your wife, but not too much, just enough that she knows her place. I literally had to read it 3 times to make sure it was actually written there.

Probably oft-quoted, but here it is anyway. It is not taken out of context. (translation not mine)

"Men are the protectors (Qawamoon) of women, because God has given preference to some over others. And because men spend of their property on women. So good women are obedient, guarding even unnoticed that what Allah (God) has asked them to guard. As for those from whom you fear rebellion in this (i.e. guarding their chastity in your absence), i) talk to them, ii) leave them alone in their beds, iii) strike them. If they then obey you, look not for any way against them.. (Koran 4:34)."

Tatsuma:
Definitely. Canadian identity mostly revolves around "Well, at least we're not Americans".

You can see it with stuff like "Talking to Americans". They go in America and ask zany questions to Americans about Canada and then make fun of them when they don't know. Two things:

Americans really don't give a shiat about Canada. Unless we run out of lumber and moose, we won't.

Even Canadians don't care and know Canadian history, so to expect Americans to know better than them is retarted.

Canadian identity is really quite distinct. Compare Canadian politics with American and you see a huge difference.

That is just for starters.

We just pick on Americans because we know that you should do better with all the resources and wealth that you have, but you still keep screwing it all up so badly. Basically, you're our dimwitted big brother.

Or, to quote Mercer, "if this was prison America would be [Canada's] b_tch. We're bigger, and we're on top".

Funny how this PC society can be so accepting of hate for Islam. I think most of us would be uncomfortable if we saw anti-Jewish cartoons from 75 years ago, but they were acceptable at the time.

As much as I have the same questions about Islam claiming to be a religion of peace, I have to think that we will look back on this time of our history as a dark period of hatred.
-----------------

Is that because there's so much to Islam to love? Beheadings? Whippings? Arresting someone for having an microscopic spec of weed on their shoe? Arresting people for drinking alcohol?

C'mon, it's a religion of idiocy. The biggest drinkers I've known were Islamic. Hell, go behind the Hilton in Al Ain at night, and you'll see line of cars full of devout Islamics buying trunkloads of beer and liquor.

But, your right... I better act like it's a religion of peace or someone might try to kill me.

As for depictions of Mohammed... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammed
