Outside of the back gate there was this really kick ass Imbiss... (think bratwurst stand)
Don't get me started on the food. Loved the currywurst at the Hoehenfels snack bar...the old German guy would bellow "CURRYWURST" when your food was ready. And those steak sammiches at the Schweinfurt GTA roach coach were awesome.

While I'm at it thanks Germany for this too...

/Best bier on earth since 1417

Agreed. Had my first mug of it in 1984 and have loved it ever since.

Dragynwing: In München steht ein Hofbräuhaus:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa ...
Da läuft so manches Fäßchen aus:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa ...
Da hat so mancher brave Mann:
Eins, zwei, g'suffa ...
Gezeigt was er so vertragen kann
Schon früh am Morgen fing er an
Und spät am Abend kam er heraus
So schön ist's im Hofbräuhaus.

I love German drinking songs.

Holy crap! That was one of the first songs my German teacher taught us. Needless to say, she was one of my favorite teachers in high school.

Stavag: Reading this from my office on base in Hohenfels right now. Love that its not blocked. Its news, right?

DUDE! I would be reading this from my office on post ("base" is an exaggeration) at Hohenfels, if my grandmother hadn't died Saturday :(

I'm shocked that they haven't Websensed it, but maybe there are some bigwigs in USAREUR G-6 who like it...

But anyway, relations seem to be good with the community in the Oberpfalz. As long as the young guys don't get drunk and stupid (start fighting) in public, the Bavarians seem ok with them.

We still have the German-American Volksfests at the posts in northeastern Bavaria - my German boyfriend insists on going to the one at Hohenfels for the fireworks. I'm glad for that, because I can then drink a liter of beer (he doesn't drink at all! Permanent DD!)

Good for the Landstuhl mayor.

You all know a bier (new window) is a cart used to transport corpses, right? Makes the headline extra creepy, don't it?

You know who else transported corpses in a cart?

Outside of the back gate there was this really kick ass Imbiss... (think bratwurst stand) they had these Rotwursts that were well... to this day I can't find their equal anywhere.. fond memories, fond memeories...

My dad was stationed at Kapun from 84-87 and we lived just outside of Landstuhl in a set of high-rise buildings down the street from that Imbiss. I went to Middle School on Landstuhl. My brother and I would walk to school (past the Imbiss, through the gate, across the helicopter pad)...lovely memories.

I remember the hill at the front gate, too. For field-trips from the school, we have to walk down the hill to catch the train. Of course, at the end of the day, walking back up was never fun.

My brother and I often would walk from the high-rises to the castle and spend the day playing hide-n-seek, etc...

Now, when I think how far we would walk and up and down those hills...kids today wouldn't do it...but we loved it. Ah...the memories...

The thing I remember most about Landstuhl is the hundreds of railway hospital cars that used to be parked in the front yard.

4/3 ADA, Kitizigen Germany here (in the 80's). What a time we had! Loved going down to Garmisch, Berhesgarten, Austria, renting porsches and screaming down the autobahn through the alps when I was 19! Loved the German girls and beer

Free Beer, Free Beer,
That's my favorite brand.
If I didn't have to buy it,
It's the best beer in the land
Warm, flat, funky,
It don't matter to me.
'Cause the greatest beer in this whole world
Is the one you buy for me.

Coleman Barracks, Mannheim '90-94, Food, fests, topless beaches, great times. Then there were field excercises in Hohenfels, seems like it was always either bitter cold or raining and muddy, don't miss that so much!

oh my heart goes out to you in grafenwohr. did field excercizes there several times. damn near froze my ass off. and i was raised in buffalo, so that takes some doing...it's about 69 degrees here in florida, and i' gazing at a palm tree right now.

Ahh, Landstuhl.

I was stationed at Miesau Army Depot from 1994-1996, 23rd Ordnance company, MOS was 55B. Had my first and second surgeries at Landstuhl, it's an interesting place. (Word of advice, don't let MLRS pods fall on your foot. It's bad.)

I spent most of my spare time in Germany in K-town, Frankfurt, and sometimes Saarbrucken. Much, much drinking was to be had...gods I miss Bitburger. Not Park though, that stuff tasted like ass.

BTW...if anyone has been on/outside of Miesau lately, is that gasthouse right outside the gate still there? I used to devour their little pepperoni/mushroom pizzas.

Another vote for Hacker-Pschorr. I brew my own ales, and actively seek fresh local craft brews, but Hacker-Pschorr Munich Edelhell will always have a place in my heart (and my refrigerator). I always buy unopened cases to make sure that it didn't get light struck. That beer is so good even after a trip across the pond, I can only imagine the sweet sweet nectar that it must be back in old Deutschland.

Props to the mayor... giving our guys some hospitality and normalcy for a while.

It is an election year, you might want to muzzle the Code Pink assholes.

Well ho-ly shiza, I had no idea there were that many USAREUR based dudes on here. Here in Heidelberg, Fark is blocked because it's "News, Forum Related" and of an "Adult Nature" or something. I hate my job now. I'd take going to Hohenfels again over this crap.

Oh wait, I am. Next WEEK.

Oh and I had to go with you Baumholder guys a few months back. Thanks for that. Really.

The stupid ß and ss are interchangable. Kinda like you can substitute umlauts with "ae, oe, ue" (which is good because I cant use kraut keyboard layout without screwing up)
