FTFA: Putin, on the eve of his departure from office, offered his thoughts on the Russian economy to a State Council session. He said Russia is too dependent on natural resource exports, and needs to increase spending on education, healthcare and science, ITAR-TASS, the Russian news agency reported.

He called for reductions in state control and for more private investment.

Pretty interesting statements from Putin, actually.

Well, the ruble appreciated in the neighborhood of 30% from the time I first went to Russia (2002) to where it is now. A lot of that can be written down to the fall of the dollar and the rise in energy prices. Long term rouble strengh? Dunno.

Is Putin still trying to catch up to Portugal's GDP?

Even in the worst days of Russia's post-Soviet economy, it was 'only' 5 times as large as Portugal's.
