See what guns do to society?

Just some snowflakes who watched Heat a few too many times...we need more censorship of movies to prevent this from happening in the future

10 years already?! Wow.

2008-02-08 09:39:59 AM
That was some CRAZY shiat.

Someone should know for sure but didn't that event have something to do with outlawing sales of body armour to private citizens? A friend and I were discussing that the other day but we couldn't come up with an answer.

10 years? The article says 1997.

What do guns do to society? Last time I checked a gun could not go off with out a little help from a person. Stop blaming objects for peoples actions. If we did not have guns we would use knifes, if we did not have kives we would use sticks, if we did not have sticks we would use rocks, if we did not have rocks we would use our bare hands.

I guess its time to get rid of the hands. That should take care of hte problem.

2008-02-08 09:41:25 AM
And is the court case filed on behalf of one of the robbers' family because they didn't get him medical help fast enough still ongoing?

At least they stole their idea from a good movie.

Manufacturers and sellers of police tactical gear, vehicles, and weapons should all send flowers to the robbers' families. Now every police department across the country has a squad of urban soldiers.

I don't think it was outlawed until 9/11

subby fails on multiple levels.

The North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily-armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, and patrol and SWAT officers of the Los Angeles Police Department in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California on February 28, 1997.

Not 10 years. Even if it was 2007 it wouldn't be exactly 10 years today. subby, do you own a calendar?

Since when is civilian body armor illegal? Not in my state, and not by federal law unless you're a convicted felon, IIRC.

I believe it just pumps up the charges even worse if you're wearing it while in the commission of a crime.

I took notes on what do do and what not to do. A buddy of mine talked about it once, we both have military and demolition experience. I think we could pull it off. There is no SWAT in this county also :)

The cops would've been better off just hitting them with a car.
Or get a single rifle with a .223/5.56 round.

2008-02-08 09:49:05 AM
True, HugeMidget, but the alternative is that we are defenseless against much better armed criminals.

This situation made it clear that the police were getting far behind the curve of reality, they were fighting with inferior equipment and tactics.

Also, a civilian in most states can still get body armor, but it is a felony or misdemeanor to use it whilst committing a crime.

I'd rather the government have the firepower they need than the criminals. Although I carry my own as well, I'd prefer to never use it.

Anyway, the thugs in our area are still as well armed (or in some case better armed) than the police. Which is why I'm looking forward to working this weekend, I have no doubt I will try and resuscitate more than a few people blown away by some hefty weapons, and most of the time I am unsuccessful.

What's better is that when people talk about how high their ER bills are, I just mention the 10 thousand to 1 million dollar workup and surgery and transfer etc. that we had to do on young gangsters without insurance, and we have to pay for it all somehow.

So get back to work people! It's Friday and they'll be coming in soon!

But you gotta admit, it would've been even more entertaining watching guys rob a bank with maces and catapults.

Automatic weapons - illegal unless made prior to the 1986 ban and federally licensed. Also illegal in CA, I think.

Armor piercing ammo - illegal unless registered with the feds. Use in a crime is an mandatory 5 year jail term. Legal under CA law? I'm not sure, but I suspect not.

Your argument is specious because it cuts the other way as well. Since it takes "a little help from a person," why not allow people to own rocket launchers, chemical and nuclear weapons, and tanks?

Guns have much more destructive force then the next most dangerous item on your list, knives. You can kill far more easily and efficiently with knives. Further, guns can assist in depersonalizing the act, making it easier for some people to use a gun than a knife, a stick, or their bare hands.

In short, you're going to have to do better than that, bub.

You mean most any centerfire rifle ammunition?

It would have ended much sooner if some random person had walked up with a rifle and handed it to a police officer if he didn't feel comforatble using it himself. Too bad you can't have one of those citizen. Someone might get hurt!

2008-02-08 09:52:49 AM
But but but, if there would have been just one civilian with a CCW we could have adverted this tragedy.

As many times as the Bank of America that used to be in the Kroger down the street was robbed, it really can't be that hard. Especially given the mouthbreathing idiots that pull usually pull it off. The last guy robbed it, drove across the street to another shopping center, got in his getaway car and they never found him. The bigass regional banks would probably be a little tougher though.

Funny, Nobody's ever said that citizens didn't have those types of weapons during that bank robbery. It's just that the NRA and GOA-crazed types who think that we're all rugged individuals so it's not their problem, choose not to help out.

Best way to rob a bank. Get a job at one. They lose 10 times as much money to insiders then they do to robbers.

/BTW the 10 times figure is pulled straight out of my ass, so it may stink.

Better watch out.. in counties with no swat and some areas of the state, you get military response from national gaurd.

Hmmmm SWAT who wants to arrest you.... or weekend warriors with a grudge and m16's with AP rounds.

......tough choice

It's illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in CA
