2002-10-26 12:36:41 PM
My dad had to deal with these things all the time when he was in 'Nam. He was an ammo dump specialist (or whatever their called) and told me many stories of how they blew up these things inside various objects for shiats and giggles. Theres a dummy cluster bomb sitting on my desk as I write this. Always scares the hell out of people when they come into my room.
2002-10-26 12:37:07 PM
JoeLlama, it's a WWII reference.
2002-10-26 12:38:08 PM
And why exactly are Belgium and Norway bombing anybody? Luxembourg must be getting uppity...
2002-10-26 12:38:23 PM
Dumbass indeed, next time they should bring in a squad of Americans to show them how to drop bombs in training exercises.
2002-10-26 12:38:54 PM
Damn Luxembourgians, damn them all to hell!! god i'm bored, someone rescue me.
2002-10-26 12:40:04 PM

2002-10-26 12:45:45 PM

2002-10-26 12:47:58 PM
Ha. Don't they know that they're supposed to be bombing the Canadians "by mistake"?
2002-10-26 12:48:34 PM

/me bows & scrapes
2002-10-26 12:53:56 PM
Also, did you guys know that the French Foreign Legion once tried to assassinate the president of France and then conquer it? That's why they are banned from operating in France, and they can only operate in foreign lands. Cuz the French are scared of their foreign mercenary army.
2002-10-26 12:59:29 PM
the french foreign legion headquarters are in aubagne france
2002-10-26 01:06:07 PM
wow, this has turned into a slashdot thread, in large part thanks to me. Why o why did I bring up the francoprussian war? Ugh, what was I thinking.
2002-10-26 01:08:40 PM
It's also a Plains of Abraham reference.
2002-10-26 01:09:23 PM

Read the FARQ

God forbid any Western power build weapons that could actually hurt someone...

This weapon is too effective. It must be unethical.
Feh. Should we all go back to fire-hardened spears?
2002-10-26 01:16:49 PM
did i miss something? (no references to france here)
it didn't say anywhere that they bombed the wrong area, it was about using cluster bombs, which are apparently banned there because of the potential for unexploded bombs sitting around and acting like landmines

anyone else read the article to make sure that i don't actually know what the fark i'm talking about?
2002-10-26 01:24:14 PM
France never surrendered in WWI. They actually fought for once and won. If you are going to make fun of a country's history at least get it right.
2002-10-26 01:31:51 PM
It's fun to make jokes about France surrendering, but it'll never change the fact that they ripped Europe a new one during the reign of this little guy called Napolean. :)
2002-10-26 01:36:02 PM
yeah because they didn't do any surrendering towards the end of his career
2002-10-26 01:39:25 PM
I'd be nervous, too, if my neighbour started bombing shiat.

Oh wait, never mind. I live in Canada.
2002-10-26 01:55:54 PM
yeah, weapons are banned in politically correct countries because, you know, they may offend or hurt the enemy.

come on people of the west, lets just surrender like france, so we wont offend or hurt anybody.

lets embrace the holy warriors of islam and enjoy our diversity!

in the words of someone greater than i:
It's a trap!
2002-10-26 02:49:31 PM
France tried to surrender in WWI in 1917. The army was about to mutiny if the Germans pressed too hard, the only thing that stopped them were the British and American troops in reinforcement.

The British and so a lesser extent, the Americans won World War I.
2002-10-26 03:11:51 PM
Is that really what they teach you in the US? That the Americans won the First World War?

Wow, no wonder your country has such an inflated ego.
2002-10-26 03:24:04 PM
in the words of someone greater than i: It's a trap!

It's a trap!

P.S. Thanks for the praise.
2002-10-26 03:32:37 PM
LOL The_marq, the war was at a total stand-off in 1917 when the U.S. troops arrived, everyone else had already committed all their troops and had no reinforcements to throw in. All we did was supply enough fresh bodies to unbalance the situation. So in that sense, yes we did win WWI.
2002-10-26 03:40:45 PM
They didn't actually miss the target according to the article. The actual problem is that the military dropped the cluster bombs in the first place. It is against the Norwegian government's policy to use 'em.
2002-10-26 03:49:41 PM
A large contingent of french soldiers surrendered at the Battle of Big Horn as well.
2002-10-26 03:54:55 PM
I didn't say that the Americans solely won the war. I said that because America entered the war when they did, they were able to help the British in winning the war. The French fought a lot of tough battles, but if they were left on their own, they'd have folded years before. If the Germans had been able to move all their troops from the eastern front to the western front after beating the Russians, they may very well have overrun the British and French without American help.

Sounds to me like someone has an axe to grind in regards to the U.S. Have you even visited all the states in the United States? How can you make such sweeping generalizations about Americans?
2002-10-26 07:54:43 PM
All this talk of French surrenders... hmm. It seems like they have a lot more common sence than any other country's military.
I mean, I would totally be shiatting my pants if I were getting shot at. Surrendering is the most logical way to end it.
2002-10-26 08:23:46 PM
France surrenders
USA nukes cities
My ass itches
2002-10-26 09:47:18 PM
Enough with the France surrendering joke's getting old yet again.
2002-10-26 10:24:54 PM
The US contributed far more than troops in WWI. Munitions and other supplies shipped across the Atlantic - through a German U-Boat blockade which was actually more effective than the one in WWII - allowed Britain and France to keep their own Armies in the field.

It wasn't our troops that turned the tide. We didn't send that many. It was our industrial base.
2002-10-27 06:55:02 AM
it didn't say anywhere that they bombed the wrong area, it was about using cluster bombs, which are apparently banned there because of the potential for unexploded bombs sitting around and acting like landmines

That article only hints at it (third paragraph up from the bottom); several undetonated bombs landed outside the test area. See
