Memphis International Airport apparently took a direct hit. A couple hangars were destroyed (Fedex and Pinnacle Airlines) and some planes were tossed.

2008-02-05 07:41:57 PM
Hickory Ridge Mall on the southeast side of Memphis was hit hard as well. 50 foot wall of the Sears store was blown down and the interior of the mall is flooded.

I'm gonna lose some packages. Hope everyone is okay.

So were they having a tornado drill at the time?

2008-02-05 08:02:46 PM
We caught the north end of the storm up in Champaign, IL. Lots of lightning and heavy rain.

Hope everyone's okay!

Yikes! That's the major FedEx exchange

My sister called me from her closet an hour or so ago. She says they're fine now, but that there's another stronger line of storms coming their way very soon.

She said she can see a fire not too far from her apartment. :( :( :(

2008-02-05 08:03:07 PM
This was serious. The damage was estimated at $15.00.

/sorry

noYOUare: are you and yours all right?

Yeah, everyone's alright. I was planning on sleeping through it, but the sirens woke me up.

I've only heard of injuries at a Taco Bell on Winchester.

I just talked to my sister there and she didn't mention the airport. She said it was more southwest. My folks in Hernando got hit pretty hard.

Touched down in the land of the delta blues in the middle of the pouring rain, eh?

I know how farking scary those tornadoes can be, had to hustle from more than a few of them myself.

I am near Audubon Woods in Memphis Park/Perkins area.

Sirens and power fluctuation.

We are still working but we moved away from the windows.

Wind Rain and Tornado Sirens.

Hope everyone is fine.

Wow, for a long time Memphians thought that the bluff would push a storm like that to the north or south. Then that way, either Frasier or Southaven gets whacked and then its ok.

Hope everyone is ok there.

Tornado, my arse.

Just the built-up wind-energy of the Memphis Sound brewing for decades now

Reporting from Midtown:

Light to no damage here, had to clear the gutters in Evelyn to get the flooding down, the occasional tree fell on a house, I bought more beer and am prepared for the worst.

Further updates as more weather happens and beer allows, supposedly Arkansas has more crappy storms to throw at us so who knows what can happen. Anybody needs help throw me a line via emails. Stay classy Memphis.

Back to you...

So, would this be the appropriate time to start panicking?

Well, I'm sure if a kind soul like yourself and three other total farkers give up TF for a month you guys can single handedly save Memphis.

Damn. I always thought it would be Dallas or Oklahoma City that would be the first major city to get hit like this. I hope it isn't as bad as I fear.

The Union University (Jackson, TN) webcam just showed a tornado make a close approach. The cam is now down. A tornado emergency has been issued for Jackson, TN.

Not to be a dick... but who cares?

I feel bad for people getting hurt and all, but a tornado is not really Fark-worthy news. Hell, it's barely local news worthy news.

Someone please describe more tornado. I'm familiar with wind. We've had winds up to 40 mph here. That means smaller branches in trees come down and lay in the street and sometimes a big tree falls on a car.

What happens in a tornado? Is there like stuff blowing everywhere in the air? Does your car get pushed off the road? At what windspeed?

I want to know ALL about tornadoes.

This is going to be a very, very large news story tomorrow. Likely quite a few people died today; a tornado outbreak is ongoing and quite a few cities have already been hit.

It's a tornado. They really are not that deadly. You see one, you go inside. They do a little damage, they go away.

Tornados occur at the rate of 100s a year. Nothing to see here, move along.

Hey, I'm someone's ex as well.... waaaaitaminit!! Is this some kinda voodoo weather curse? Dammit!

If we get another flood like that tonight, I'm gonna build a crude raft and sail down to the lesbian bar where it's safer...

NSA Millington is just fine. I'm sitting outside; nice breeze, good temp, no rain.

wow, cool....'cept the OK part. ;-)

Me, I am in the bestest weather in the world, Washington state. Yes where that huge flood was in December.
We are hoping that the warmer temps will not melt all the snowpack off, because that will result in another flood.
I think we will see another flood.
