(Some Doctor)   Veteran actor Kevin Stoney has passed away. He may be best known for playing the all-time great Doctor Who villain Tobias Vaughn in "The Invasion", and Mavic Chen in epic 1960s 12-parter "The Daleks' Master Plan"   (gallifreyone.com) divider line 26

That's really too bad, although I'm not surprised after seeing footage of him shot in the last few years for the extras on Doctor Who DVDs.

While I've only heard the audios for most of the Daleks' Master Plan (since most of the episodes no longer exist except as audios), his character Tobias Vaughn in the classic Cybermen story The Invasion is without a doubt one of my favorite Doctor Who villians of all time.

If you've never seen the story, it's out on DVD, and is IMO, one of the best Cybermen stories. It was a big influence on the new-series Cybermen 2-parter, and was basically the test run for the 3rd Doctor UNIT stories.

Stoney plays a great sardonic, driven businessman who makes a deal with the Cybermen, and his performance (and the character itself) are a joy to watch. Truly one of those great classic characters.

Pretty impressive though, to play in two of the great classic 1960s Doctor Who stories, not to mention roles in Blakes 7, I Claudius, and All Creatures Great and Small...

He was awesome.

I would just like to go on record as saying I have NO idea who this chap was. I need to go watch some old Who, this was waaay before my time.

I thought the all-time great Dr. Who villan was Tom Baker's Scarfia from the planet Fashion-no.

- Just wanted to see if that would look as fey as I thought it would all typed out.

It does.

do yourself a favor and check out some of the older series. Esp. Tom Baker's episodes. My personal favorite is "Genesis of the Daleks".

That's not to say the new series doesn't rock, it does. But it helps to know where it comes from.

Man, that's tragic. He was one sweet bad guy. While the Master Plan story doesn't exist completely, you can see him doing his thing in green facepaint. But The Invasion...he was truly the reason to watch that story, hands down.

Truly a great and unappreciated actor.

Sounds like some episodes that never aired here. Unfortunate that I've missed them.

if he requires that much description, he's not famous enough to be green

I've always thought Pink Floyd's "one of these days" could be made into a great doctor who theme

Oh, that Kevin Stoney!

Fark me, I thought it some coont nobody has ever heard of save for some nerdy douchebag who wanks off to Dr. Who.

Wow, I am so relieved. I do hope they erect a statue for him and maybe give him a posthumous knighthood. The world mourns tonight.

Man I loved Stoney's work on Doctor Who. Hell when he played Tyrum in 'Revenge of the Cybermen' he was great even stuck underneath that lousy mask.

Man that sucks...

You very definitely do. We would never have the series we have today if it weren't for the series of the past.

I love watching the really old stories from the '60s and seeing the seeds of all the stuff I grew up watching in the '70s, and the show we have today.

Plus you get great performances from amazing old-school actors, groundbreaking (if primitive and cheap looking by our glossy modern standards) special effects, directors who tried risky and incredibly challenging things with equipment so limited and primitive by modern standards that current directors and cameramen would shiat their pants if they had to work with it...

It's great stuff.

/geek, can you tell?

cmunic8r99: if he requires that much description, he's not famous enough to be green

Nonsense. If I'd had space I could've put twice as much description, and it is precisely *because* of that that he deserves a green.

/seriously, the guy was awesome, whether or not you've heard of him

Just wanted to chime in about Invasion. Solid acting on Stoney's part made for an excellent well-rounded villain. The DVD is worth picking up.

/new Who soon. In the meantime Torchwood seems to be finding its stride, last ep was four star.

I haven't seen Revenge in years. I've got to see if I have a working copy (sadly, 75% of my video collection, which consisted of every complete Doctor Who story at one point, has died of old age and mold) of that and watch it this week some time in memorial.
