We are England's Florida. We don't have to run from hurricanes a few times each summer.

I just don't understand Floridians.

House prices are too high everywhere. The reason so many people move abroad is that if you sell a house in the UK you can buy an equivalent sized house in e.g. Canada and have money left over to make your retirement easier.

"There are a number of different reasons why people relocate abroad, to be nearer to family and friends, to start a new job, or as the study demonstrates, to increase their quality of life," said David Isley...

In other words, because living in England sucks.

Wow. Americans retire in Florida and the British have the option to retire in France or Italy.

Another reason why I'm insanely jealous of the British.

Well you CAN get chianti and sangria in Canada. Good luck getting maple syrup in Italy.

Then they move into a retirement igloo and drive their damn zambonis too slow in the passing lane.

Princess Queef: Wow. Americans retire in Florida and the British have the option to retire in France or Italy.

It's not just the retirees, I know two couples in their early forties who have gone to live in France and Spain respectively, and where my wife works there are a couple of Germans in their twenties who have come to England to live and work. It's cool in a way because for centuries the continent has been ripped apart by wars, yet the rise of a Euro super-state where many of the members have no great affection for habeas corpus bothers me.

2008-02-01 10:34:27 PM

Why not? Less of a shock for 'em.
The Queen is on the coins here and we hate the French, or what passes for the French here.

cerberus9: I've lived in Canada 37 years, and I've never tasted (real) maple syrup.

That's surprising, since I first tasted maple syrup at 11.

cerberus9: I've lived in Canada 37 years, and I've never tasted (real) maple syrup.

It's not cheap. I half-gallon tin runs about $20 for good Quebec syrup in most grocery stores. There is a maple syrup lodge not too far from where I live and I can get half-gallon tin for about $12 direct from the producer. But consider a similar sized jug of that artificial syrup costs about $3 in a grocery store most people don't see the need to pay significantly more for what is basically liquid sugar.
