The oldies are telling us that the new generation is going to grow up illiterate because they "don't write emails" they just "text message".

I say they need to STFU, kids that grow up SMS are still going to know the words behind the acronyms, we're just taking steps to make the written word flow as quickly and easily as the spoken.

What's happening? Who am I? Why am I here? What's my purpose in life? What do I mean by who am I? Okay okay, calm down, calm down get a grip now. Ooh, this is an interesting sensation. What is it? Its a sort of tingling in my... well I suppose I better start finding names for things. Lets call it a... tail! Yeah! Tail! And hey, what's this roaring sound, whooshing past what I'm suddenly gonna call my head? Wind! Is that a good name? It'll do. Yeah, this is really exciting. I'm dizzy with anticipation! Or is it the wind? There's an awful lot of that now isn't it? And what's this thing coming toward me very fast? So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like 'Ow', 'Ownge', 'Round', 'Ground'! That's it! Ground! Ha! I wonder if it'll be friends with me? Hello Ground!

Actually, this is why you go to college for four years. Half of the time you are there it's learning the language of the trade.

I would use words from engineering that the average person wouldn't know, but that list is a long to pick from. When's the last time you solution hardened a batch of 6061 forgings?

I've tried to integrate "Ong" into the popular lexicon. It's farking clumsy, but it's funny: Add the suffix -ong to every consonant, including "Y." Vowels are voiced as they would normally.

"Hey! it might only be the size of a needle, but it works like a sewing machine.."

/Obscure to some of you at least.

Seems like regional dialects simply became more exaggerated through generation's of abuse. For example, the cajun language is almost an english french now and getting worse, I'm sure.

We'll probably see the rate of change slowing for most folks though, considering that in the old days, (and still, in some areas) folks couldn't document what the words were.. not just in dictionaries, but in simple manuscripts. Also, the further away a group is (geographically) the more pronounced the changes would get. These days, with the Internet, it's not quite like that anymore.

How much has American English changed from Brittish English? It's basically still the same language, but there are cultural references that simply aren't the same.

For example: "Tic Tac Toe" in America is "Noughts and Crosses" in England. "Sixes and Sevens" is an Brittish term for crazy folks. To say "knock you up in the morning" in England is a way of saying that you'll come over and knock on their door the next morning. In America it means you're suggesting that you're going to get the person pregnant in the morning.

There are certainly accents over in England that are almost undecipherable to me, yet officially, it's still the same language. SOMETIMES you can use the context to determine what was said, but when it's odd phrases, it's a different ballgame entirely.

me personally, not recently. the company i work for does it fairly often though (this, other aluminum alloys, steels, and so forth), and i do at least know what it means.
