Ahh, Waterford. Yes, it really is something in the water there.

2008-02-01 02:26:31 PM
I filled in my sister & fathers graves, every family should try it.

Least she wasn't digging him up.

spaceninjax: Least she wasn't digging him up.

That's the first thing that came to mind. At least zombies will have an easy time escaping. Watch out Waterford, zombies are coming.

How does a town "forget" to fill in a big hole in the ground with a casket/dead body inside?

/Don't let the zombies get to it!

It's in my Will that my brother has to fill in my grave.

I wanna be buried by those who loved me, not some random grave digger.

I want to be cut up into itty, bitty pieces and buried aliiive!

Personally, I think it's all a load of crap. I would prefer to bury my own. For all you know the workers covering your dead with dirt are talking smack and being disrespectful.

Quit whining and quit being cheap. Stop asking for refunds too.

How lame. Seems to me there was a time when EVERYONE had to bury their own deceased relatives.

But as the circumstances of John Noble's burial-gone-wrong suggests, operating a cemetery is more complex than running a pool or highway.

Step 1: Dig hole
Step 2: Put coffin in hole
Step 3: Fill Hole with dirt

It's not rocket science

I had to do this once. My friends father was a mortician. Lesson: Don't pay the grave diggers in advance.

The workers got drunk, forgot and said 'they'd get 'round to it on Monday - mebbe.' We spent Friday night filling in a grave.

That's a great idea. Should make it into a contest with other family members- whichever loved one fills your grave the fastest gets your estate. Hopefully it will rain that day. Make em work for it.

Viking Funeral!

At night!

The only way to go!

Especially if the boat is filled with random fireworks and everybody has to duck.

I love that this somehow justifies not only not doing the job the cemetery (or whoever) was PAID to do, but leaving a casket just totally exposed.

/People used to bury their own kids all the time; I'm just trying to bring us back to that simpler time

It hath been published to the town that none shall entomb him or mourn, but leave unwept, unsepulchred, a welcome store for the birds, as they espy him, to feast on at will.

Alas poor Yorick, I knew him well.

Considering the fact that everyone dies, why do we as a society accept taking such expense and real estate to intern our bodies? I know I'll get some flame for this, but it really erks me that it has to cost anything to die.

/now get off my lawn

Note to Lorne:

I found this at FARK.com. I think this could be the basis for a great video. It just needs a few changes. What do you think?

Step 2: Put coffin in hole
Step 3: Fill Hole with dirt

This girl was already versed in insolence when she transgressed the laws that had been set forth; and, that done, lo, a second insult: to vaunt of this, and exult in her deed.

A time not long to be delayed shall awaken the wailing of men and of women in thy house. And a tumult of hatred against thee stirs all the cities whose mangled sons had the burial-rite from dogs, or from wild beasts, or from some winged bird that bore a polluting breath to each city that contains the hearths of the dead.

Stray thoughts.

Perhaps they were leaving it open for "easy access", get some lovin'.
Perhaps they like me welcome our cancer ridden zombie overlords.

Skotmeister:
Step 1: Dig hole
Step 2: Put coffin in hole
Step 3: Fill Hole with dirt

Perhaps this is the illusive formula and skipping step three leads to Profit!

The woman totally overreacted. Funeral was on Friday, the crew sent to fill the hole afterward got stuck due to bad weather. She couldn't wait until Monday? Come on lady, this is January in upstate New York.

There is something respectful and proper about burying your own. That being said, she paid these dickwads to do it; it should have been done, if for no other reason than decency.

And ApeMan... word. It would really make more sense if the state just paid for cremations and containers. Cheaper. More efficient. I'm all for anything that stops folks from capitalizing on death and suffering.

I came here to say this.

I filled in my Mom's grave. I don't know if the word is carthartic, or therapeutic, or what, but it did something to help the grieving process...to return your loved one to the earth.

Ah, the capital district. Where filling in your brothers grave doesn't even make the 5pm news

At Jewish burials, the family fills in the grave. Most people just do a symbolic shovelful for each family member, but the more orthodox fill the entire thing. When my father died a few years ago, I cried through the funeral, of course, but when i stuck the shovel in the dirt and then heard the hollow noise as it hit the coffin, I completely lost it.

On the lighter side, my grandmother was buried on a very hot August day. Nobody could do more than a few throws before getting overheated. My two cousins were the only young, healthy men there, and they had to do the whole thing themselves. We all stood around and made heatstroke jokes to encourage them.

Good times.

I live in Illinois, but have family in the South. For two of my uncle's funerals in Illinois, workers filled in the graves. At my grandparents and uncle's funerals in Alabama, the family filled the graves.

/Seems to be a Southern custom

If the city don't bury you baby, lord knows the county will.
