...requiring all residential, commercial and industrial properties to contract with Allied Waste for pickup at least once a week - a standard requirement in most cities, San Carlos Deputy City Manager Brian Moura said.

In every city or town I've lived in that has had trash services, it was paid for from property taxes and such. But that's here in Maine. I don't know how it works elsewhere.

2008-01-30 05:38:28 AM
It varies. Here our town is contracted with Waste Management, and so we have trash and recycling pickup paid for through local taxes.

In PA, my brother's town has a different system - they have no recycling, and they have to buy specially marked bags for their trash at the town hall for $1 a bag, which pays for the trash pickup. So instead of paying for that he takes his trash to work and puts it in the work dumpster.

LaChanz: I don't know how it works elsewhere.

Works the same in Perth. The council pays a recycling company to deal with recyclables on the condition that the company gets all proceeds. This reduces their fees and our taxes. They would probably get pissed off if we started recycling our own stuff for our own profit.

This guy is just a cheapskate hiding behind 'environmentalism' hoping he won't have to pay for garbage pick up.
I'm all for saving the earth, but he's obviously making trash...

FTA: House's lack of garbage service was brought to the attention of city officials after neighbors complained that House was causing foul smells by burning his garbage.

In the town I live in now, it's $1.25 a bag that you bring to the transfer station yourself. Last time I was there I brought half a truck load of sheetrock and they charged me $10 to dump it. I don't mind if they cover cost, but in the last town report I read, the transfer station is pulling in a profit. Quite a healthy one at that. In fact, the money from the bags alone covers the cost to run it and then some. Needless to say, I now pay for curbside service at $12 a month.

He says it was just firewood. Who are you going to believe? A man who complains about a lot of things, or the recipients of his ire over the years...? If he's burning his garbage he should be sued for burning garbage, if it's illegal, not for cancelling his trash collection service.

I have private trash service, but if I didn't want it, I wouldn't have to have it. I could cancel it any time I want and haul the trash to the dump myself.

Explain to me then how it is not carbon neutral and then explain how biofuels are better for the environment if they are not indeed carbon neutral like their proponents claim if you would be so kind.

K, this is stupid on so many levels.

He has had his service canceled a year ago, and the contractor complied. So why go after him a year later?

If he broke some silly by-law, tell him he has to comply with the by-law. If you want to be a prick about it, give him a fine. Suing him is just beyond asinine.

Here is hoping he can find some kind of loophole that gets him off the hook, and allows him to counter-sue and win.

Sounds like the local union rep needs to visit this guy to explain why it is necessary for everybody to pay their trash bill.

Around here, they're gonna charge $45 a year for a bin to put bio-degradeables in, so they can truck it off and compost it. Too bad if you already compost stuff, and never use the service.

/plus they want to charge for the water I use - and I'm on a well.

2008-01-30 08:26:25 AM
I wouldn't mind the fees for garbage collection here if it was done right. I live in a community of condos where we have a couple dumpsters and a trash compactor, problem is, they are always full to the point of overflowing. If I'm paying a for a service that essentially requires us to pile garbage bags on the street, it seems a bit off. If they added an extra pickup a week, it would be grand. Other than the trash collecting crew usually pics up the trash between 3 and 5 AM.

/End rant

In my area, I'm not required to pay for garbage pick up (have no clue how much it costs, it's included in rent), I could always opt to haul it to the dump myself.

I don't mind that so much, but the fact that there's no recycling available at all is what really irks me. I do drink soda, and I would rather recycle the bottles than just toss them in the garbage. Sadly, the nearest recycling center that I know of is in Denver, over a two hour drive away.

/usually had a fuller recycling bin than garbage bin growing up
//we did use the trash service, though

Does sound weird, in our town the trash pickup is all bundled in with water in sewer in one bill, which I think is the norm, looks like in the place where this guy lives he must get a separate trash bill. Sounds to me like the city needs to change it's billing practices.

In the city I used to live in we were not only required to pay for trash service but we actually had to use it. It also had to be with the company the city told me not one of my choice. I would be breaking the law if I hauled all my trash to a landfill and dumped it myself or if I paid another trash service to pick up my trash.

Pissed me off to no end.

ipide: Burning wood does not make a foul smell..

We can burn brush (no trash, leaves, etc) in my town. Every year I clean up the deadfall from the winter, trim some trees, and thin out some smaller pines. Two years ago a new neighbor moved in (moved out from the city suburb). That spring when I was burning, he came over to biatch. I showed him my permit from the Fire Department, and, in polite, neighborly terms, told him to go fark himself. He then proceeded to call the Fire Department and claim I was burning illegally. FD shows up, the two guys come over, and the neighbor is on his back deck watching with smug satisfaction. Fireman looks at my fire, looks how afar from the house it is, sees my fire buckets, hose, shovel, etc. Says to me "we have to come out if someone complains, sorry about that", shakes my hand and walks away. Neighbord-dick comes off the deck over to the propery line and yells to the firemen "Hey, arent you going to do something?" Fireman replies "what, roast some weenies? He's got a permit, he's 50 feet from his house, 20 feet from the property line and not burning trash." "But I dont like the smell!" "Maybe you should shut your windows then."

Careful about that, it appears that burning brush makes you an 'earth-crapper' and that instead of buring you should be using a cas powered chipper or mulcher to mulch your brush instead.....

There's a probability that, as in the town of my birth, all refuse goes to the same place.

Got into recycling about eight years ago. I usually worked pretty early in the morning, and on a day off, I decided to follow the recycling truck. The bastard went to the same landfill, if not the exact same dumpsite, and let fly. The guy at the security booth said they didn't have the recycling facilities, but the way he asked me to leave led me to believe that the material to be recycled went right on top of the dead fridges and old computer monitors.

After that, we used those nice blue recycling boxes to build snow forts.

2008-01-30 09:06:08 AM
In Ithaca, NY, the way you pay for trash pickup is by buying trash tags that go on your trash bags. You want to take it to the dump instead and not buy trash tags, that's fine. They do weigh you as you go in and out though, but if it's not much trash it's usually under a couple of bucks.

Gratz, you've just experienced the next logical step in NIMBY: NIYBY (Not In Your Back Yard). This is the point at which, not content to dictate what goes on in their sphere of influence, they want to dictate what you get to do in your sphere of influence.

Nah, that's not carbon-neutral. You need to get yourself a mess of beavers to chip it up for you. 200-300 would be sufficient.

And when you're done, you can burn the beavers. That's carbon-neutral.
