guidoanselmi: I never understood these pageants. I see way prettier women walking down the street of Toronto every day. She looks a little like a man.

I thought we as Canadians were above such stupid, idiotic, close-minded bullshiat.

Also, ObscureNameHere, sadly, the Toronto Star is the better of the two Toronto papers. The farkers at the Toronto Sun can't even spell or use correct grammar, much less report worth a damn.

littlett's: They didn't seem to have a problem crowning her last year. I don't see what they should have any problems with her being a judge this year.

Perhaps they are scared that she will turn them into newts.

Maybe they should just build a bridge out of her.

I think it's a different pageant.

Farkers, let me draw your attention to Luke 6:37...

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Funny how they always skip that verse.

blackflag415: How dare you believe in ridiculous spiritual practices other than the ones WE endorse.

Well what's funny is that a cursory reading of the Bible demonstrates a real and solid belief in the effectiveness of psychics, necromancy, divination, et c. It paints these practices as congress with demons, but it certainly affirms the overall ability of these practices to achieve their desired outcome.

blackflag415: Tarot cards, god, it's all made up BS.

During her porn career, she was known as "Barbie Bridges". Not that anyone here would have any use for that information or anything.

Is the "stupid" tag for the stupid judge, or for the head of the pageant for not utilizing the stupid judge?

Bloody Templar: Farkers, let me draw your attention to Luke 6:37...

Also Mathew 6:5-6 - "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room (or closet.) and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret..."

Also note pageant official in the article is quoting anti-witchcraft prohibitions from Leviticus. But I can say almost with certainty that she doesn't follow other laws of the Old Testament such as no work on the Sabbath, keeping kosher, or not wearing mixed fibers.

Actually, they don't work at all either way. But at least if someone else gives them to you, you didn't waste your own money.

Of course they work. Have you ever actually tried to use a set of tarot cards? Nothing is less scientific than making claims with no evidence.

I believe that both are products of human imagination rather than naturally occurring phenomenon. I see belief in organized religion as invalid (i.e. lacking in evidence) as belief in psychics, ghosts, tarot cards, voodoo and other "occult" practices. Organized religions to me seem to be collections of these types of occult and folk practices that have been accepted by a wide section of the population and therefor made "legitimate."

blackflag415: I believe that both are products of human imagination rather than naturally occurring phenomenon.

Human imagination is an unnatural phenomenon?

blackflag415: I see belief in organized religion as invalid (i.e. lacking in evidence) as belief in psychics, ghosts, tarot cards, voodoo and other "occult" practices.

I would say that the primary difference is that "occult" practices tend to rely on the personal effort and experience of the individual. Most people use tarot cards as a way of explicating their own thoughts; it's tremendously personal. I would say there's a big difference between that and "believing" in the textual interpretation of an organized religion completely apart from personal experience.

blackflag415: Organized religions to me seem to be collections of these types of occult and folk practices that have been accepted by a wide section of the population and therefor made "legitimate."

I differ with you here too, as it seems to me that organized religion goes out of its way to try to suppress personal experience in religion, and replace it with blind faith.

Better the Hanged Jury...

Anyway...All Tarot cards do is add some randomness into the process. Humanity is wonderful at finding solutions that work and then applying them to all sorts of inappropriate situations. Basically what happens is you say "I've always thought about it like this...but now I should try a new perspective," and the cards just provide a random perspective to try. Maybe they are right and maybe they are wrong...it is all how you apply the results to your issue.

Incidentally, it is possible to be an atheist Wiccan...I know several. They believe the Gods are Jungian Architypes and exist only within the collective unconscious.

/For all of you who said "should have seen it coming:" it doesn't work like that.
//Usually you only recognize what what you are seeing means after the event has already happened.
//Still should have seen it coming...

Tarot card reading is witchcraft and is used by witches, spiritists and mediums to consult the dark world."

The letter went on to quote a couple of passages from the Bible, including one from the book of Leviticus that warns, "Do not turn to mediums or seek out spirits for you will be defiled by them."

"We hope that Stephanie Conover will turn from these belief systems and will repent from her practice of them," the letter reads.

2) The fundamental similarity between the secular materialist viewpoint, and the Christian fundamentalist viewpoint

Quick, present your evidence to James Randi and claim your million bucks. Then we won't have to listen to you whine about how poor you are any more. Sounds like a win-win proposition to me!

Zionist_Entity: Oh, PRETTY please show me some "evidence" that tarot cards provide any sort of supernatural insight.

Go out and buy a pack. Read the instructions carefully. Spend 10 minutes studying each card, exploring its symbolism, imagery, and meaning. Choose a "spread" and lay the cards down. Spend 20 minutes analyzing the placement of the cards, the symbolism, and what it means as a coherent whole. Put it in context of your current life and any questions that have been bothering you. I guarantee this will prove the effectiveness of tarot to you.

That's like Kent Hovind's offer of $250,000 to anyone who can prove evolution to have occurred. It's a rigged game with a biased judge.

One thing that amazes me if how often morons like yourself just make up bullshat in your head and think it's real.

This is a key point you farking tard, so pay attention: Non-retards don't just dismiss claims out of hand without evidence.

NO EVIDENCE IS EVER GIVEN. Well, that isn't entirely true, there is plenty of repeatable double blind studies that give us evidence it doesn't work.

But there is NO evidence that it does.

Oh yeah, there is also evidence that the human psyche will believe false information like this. For instance, the classic 'mix up the astrology reading, and everyone still thinks they're accurate' experiment.

So whenever anyone says the believe this shat, it is literally caused by ignorance and a general inability to comprehend things.

People that believe this childish shat are stupid, because that's what stupid is.

I've done it. Technically it was my brother's cards, if that might ruin it somehow...
Sure, it was interesting, and somewhat insightful as a creative, self-reflective exercise. I'd put it on par with looking at inkblots or watching shapes in the clouds. None of that requires the supernatural or magical to accomplish.

There's your answer. Sorry, but I'm not rushing to put my faith in some pack of cards that most likely came from some manufacturing plant that probably makes poker and greeting cards as well.

1) This makes the assumption that occult phenomenon must be repeatable under laboratory conditions. Why should this be the case? Science is only capable of analyzing events that are repeatable, and occult phenomenon would be almost by definition unrepeatable.

Why shouldn't it be repeatable? If they work, then you should get the same, or at least the close to the same result when using the same cards to address the same issue for the same person. If you don't, then how can the cards possibly be right?

*whipes drool from czarangelus chin*

So something that predicts the future isn't repeatable? Actually it is you moron. Because if it isn't, every time it predicts something else, that makes the "unrepeated" result wrong, which means it doesn't work.

Guess what tard, if something has the accuracy of random chance, it is nothing but random chance.
