(SanDiegoUnionTribune)   If you've been painting a curb red in front of an apartment and putting up a fire lane sign, the city and the guy who lives in the apartment would like you to knock it off   (signonsandiego.com) divider line 35

They were probably just imitating something they saw on tv. I believe in the original black and white denis the menace series, he did this to Mr. Wilson.

The douchebags across the street from me did this once.

I'm glad they moved.

Why would Denis get in trouble for painting the curb gray?

Just paint it gray again, set up a video camera and wait.

You know what would be a good prank? Paint *all* the curbs in a city red. Witness the parking chaos of a lifetime!

I know people who do this in San Francisco near their homes so they can get a parking space. It's not an "official" zone unless its painted to SF DPT specification so they don't get tickets from meter maids & others don't want to risk a 40 dollar ticket so they don't park there.

quite a popular scam here in the UK people rake in thousands a week doing this sort of thing. People have painted double yellow lines under cars before. dont believe we have red curbs here though but it looks like the same sorta thing to me.

I know the episode you mean, but I always thought that that was human blood.

Painting curbs red would be considered high tech where I live. Here they just put lawn furniture, old couches, shopping carts or any other debris in the street to save their parking space. Many people can't grasp the idea that they don't own the street space in front of their house. Thank the FSM we haven't had a major snow storm in a few years - the last one resulted in three murders over parking spaces.

Where I used to live (also SD), they just shoot your (my) car with a BB gun if you park in front of their house.

Oh really, Vernon, why pretend?

We both know perfectly well what it is you're talking about. You want me to have an abortion.

IF I was going to have to guess who is doing it, I would have to assume a fire marshal. It sure the heck looks like a fire lane to me.

But I am sure the tenants wouldn't raise a stink if the complex burned to the ground because the fire fighters couldn't get to the building.

How do people rake in money by painting their own no parking zones?

And yeah-- I think you are talking about the same thing. Here they will often paint curbs red or yellow to designate no parking zones/loading zones and blue for reserved handicapped spaces. The colors used vary by municipality or state.

Right, but that argument pretty much translates to any spot in any city. There's a risk-reward calculation that goes into this - how do three parking spots every day compare to one fire every 200 years, and what is the likelihood that the cars parked there will hinder the fire dept when they get there?

I believe when you go through the numbers, you'll realize that there's a reason there are so few red-painted curbs in this wonderful world of ours.

Maybe a tow truck driver is waiting for someone to park there, then he can say he had "justifiable cause" to tow? Those vultures are impossible to fight in court. Just an idea.

My neighbor used to do this, so I burnt his house down and shot his dog. He stopped.

TFA said that the city had no idea. Unless they're even less bureaucracy-driven than everywhere I've ever lived, there are copies, orders, logs, etc. of everything, and ordering a fire lane painted would entail a purchase order and so on. It'd be in the system. Watch it end up being some city official who just thought that area looked "unsafe" and did it on their own. I'm betting on some twit neighbor, however.

It's really the only sensible thing to do, if it's done safely. Therapeutically there's no danger involved.

A friend of mine painted a red curb gray outside our local bar. He put on an orange vest and hard hat to change things around at lunchtime. It has remained gray for 15 years...

My college roommate did this a few years ago to the curbs a few feet on each end of our driveway. (He had 'Curb Red' paint from the County since he ended up with community service for burning a couch). His service was painting the fading curbs to a new bright shade.

Stopped morons from parking their cars 2 feet into our driveway blocking us from getting out easily.

simpsonfan: Landlords should be required to provide a parking space for each unit. If people use that space for storage, then they shouldn't complain if they can't find street parking.

that would make sense if San Diego's city council wasn't in the pocket of big developers, who found that dwelling space collects more money than parking space and thus chose to build more of one than the other.
