the foreseeable future being, of course, from now until it hits.

I think we should send Ben Affleck to blow it up just to be sure. And we really don't have to go overboard with the budget for the rocket...

Ever see a close up of the moon, with all those pock marks covering it? Yeah, the earth gets hit way, way more. Erosion hides them pretty quickly on earth, but just imagine...

We just have to hope to not get hit by any really big ones.

Large asteroid comes to within an Earth moon's distance to hitting Earth tomorrow.

FTFA:
Other radar telescopes will point toward the asteroid as it makes its closest approach to Earth, 334,000 miles (537,500 kilometers), at 3:33 a.m. Eastern time Jan. 29. For comparison, the moon is an average of 239,228 miles (385,000 kilometers) away.

334,000 > 239,228

FAIL.

At Magnitude 10, not without a fairly large telescope, dark skies, a CCD camera and some degree of patience. And then all you get is a dot and some streaks.

HA! I remember that cartoon. Something about a huge asteroid that passed so close as to pull the atmosphere off the Earth or something, right?

I remember watching something on the History Channel the other day about asteroids.

A guy from NASA says that we have about the same number of people looking for and researching possible civilization destroying asteroids as there are to staff one shift at a McDonalds.

Methinks tax dollars may be better spent getting a few more bodies in that department.

2008-01-28 10:41:14 PM
Damn, it would be so cool if we could see it hit Mars. Meh. Can't have everything, I 'spose.

2008-01-29 01:51:52 AM
Nonetheless, I think this is our wakeup call that one of these objects will sooner or later hit this planet. Funny that the more we study them, the more we are aware of this likelihood.

The honeymoon is over.

If I'm not mistaken, subby talked about "a" distance, TFA talks about "average" distance.

If you see the asteroid moving, it's probably going to miss. The one that's coming straight at you is the one that grows brighter as it appears to be standing still.
