As a scientologist, Travolta is the only one who can help those dead people.

2008-01-26 01:42:16 PM
An investigation was underway Saturday to determine what the car was doing on the strip and what led to the fatal crash.

Teenagers, 4 AM, airstrip...I'm going to guess alcohol was involved.

Too bad they didn't smash it into some Scientology meeting at the airstrip.

A car traveling at a high rate of speed

Speed = rate of change of position = dy/dt

Rate of speed = rate of change of rate of change of position = d(dy/dt)/dt

So it was getting really good acceleration?

FTFA: An investigation was underway Saturday to determine (a) what the car was doing on the strip and (b) what led to the fatal crash.

(a) is not car's fault. is teens' fault. who would want to try and get daddy's new beamer up to 100 mph or more and see what it feels like and an airstrip seems a logical, safe place to do so.
(b) trees + speed

I hate when the media over-inflates the importance of a non-issue in a story.
Rolled up $20 bill found by Heath Ledger's body. No drug residue found on bill.
Car crashes on airstrip owned by John Travolta. Travolta had no connection to the accident.
Just give me a break and give me the real story.

Florida Highway officers said a gray 2008 BMW was traveling on an airstrip after 3:30 a.m. Saturday near Jumbolair Aviation Estates when it sailed off the 80- to 85-foot elevated runway.

I don't care about the five kids in the car. what I need to know is does someone famous live nearby, and can you cram their name into the article several times? thanks I appreciate it.

Scrounger, ok. The story he linked to made no mention of it so I was just wondering.

Here's the "elevated" runway in question. My guess is Travolta's house is the one with the 747 in the driveway.

FYI - Here in Florida, almost everything is elevated somewhat. Otherwise, especially where this happened, there's very little drainage and you're runway would be much like a giant Slip-n-Slide

Pickerel: Who the hell has an elevated airstrip?

Rich people. Very, very rich people.

So, a bunch of teens in a gated community with its own 7500-foot long runway decide to get in the 2008 BMW they got for their sweet sixteens and see just how fast they can get it going. Well, at least the [Florida] tag isn't just for poor white trash.

Hand Banana: It's not an elevated airstrip. Where did the submitter pull that from?

It's not? 17FL definitely looks like it runs perpendicular to a gully on the west side of the runway, and is elevated along some of its length.

Hand Banana: It's not an elevated airstrip. Where did the submitter pull that from?

It's not an elevated runway, but since runways have to be level, the north end of it (the end they flew off) is higher than the surrounding terrain, and also shows the embankment that they "hit":
Google Maps^

2008-01-26 02:54:48 PM
it sure does look elevated (in the google earth link), like a giant ramp. maybe some pilot type will chime in with why a big-ass ramp is nice to land on, or take off from.

I bet the force of the accident took their faces off.

/sorry

I didn't think a Focke-Wulf was a BMW.... but I believe an ME 109 would be.
