I dig post-WWII Japanese culture, but they're being a bunch of dicks about this whale killing thing. Stop killing animals that are cooler than you.

Australia has laid claim to the waters as a whale sanctuary. So this should be no surprise.

The Japanese whalers should start reciprocating the love. I'd start launching chum bombs at the hippies.

Not that I'm all for whale hunting or anything but that would be hilarious.

This 'research' makes about as much sense as aliens researching humans by giving them anal probes. What possible use can whaling serve, other than gnarly food for shockingly wealthy Japanese? I must honorably call bullshirt upon your ancient practice, seaman-san.

Wrong stereotype. It's the Chinese that eat snake gallbladders, bird's nest soup, shark fins, pig faces, etc.

Now if you had said ANY SEAFOOD, then I would have said, no, there isn't any seafood the Japanese won't eat.

Yeah, whale apparently. I saw an article about a year discussing just how hard it is to sell whale meat in Japan. There's still some elders who like whale, but for the most part, they can't give it away.

The researching excuse is a farce. They're limited to a certain ammount of whales a year for commercial pruposes and these "research whales" are being stripped of their meat which is put on the market. Also, if a fishing vessal "accidentally" catches a whale in their nets or traps they're allowed to sell them. The UN beleives that more than 1/2 of these accidental kills are infact intended in order to keep the demand for whale meat in Japan.

This.

But it's going after the South Pacific population of Minkes that gets them in such hot water with the Aussies and the Kiwis.

Ironically, part of the reason they go down south is because American whalers all but decimated the whale populations in North Pacific about 100 years ago.

You know, I don't think people realize that the species of whale these Japanese have been trying to eat are far from even remotely endangered, even if Japan culls them at like 50 times their current rate. The Japanese aren't endangering a SINGLE species out there, animal, human, what have you. Sure it's cruel to whales, but we're going a farkload more damage to sea creatures just with our environmental pillaging than anything Japan is ever willing to do. I mean, the US has it's Iraq, Japan has its whales. And I have a feeling Japan will stop indulging in whales long before US can fly out of Iraq.

2008-01-25 02:01:05 PM
Its sad that they are so utterly intent on hunting these whale.

While I am a deer and duck hunter, you would not see me killing those animals if there was only a few thousand of them left on earth.

Being in Kodiak, Alaska, whales of all sorts are a very common sight in the waters around shore during spring and summer. The Japs probably scare them to this side of the Pacific.

2008-01-25 02:02:31 PM
if whales are intelligent, should we be killing and eating them? Discuss.

oh and I've heard that younger Japanese people don't like the taste of whale meat and the population isn't clamoring for huge amounts of the stuff. The government has whale meat served up in school cafeterias to artificially inflate demand. One of those bullshiat nationalist issues.

Frank N Stein: While I am a deer and duck hunter, you would not see me killing those animals if there was only a few thousand of them left on earth.

There's a difference between hunting an overpopulated species and hunting Mhinke, which isn't endangered but still a delicate creature. Whales, overall, are sensitive to their environment and are now starving because of over fishing and the lack of krill which are dying due to polution. Not to mention there's been a rise of whales beaching themselves for no explainable reasons.

I love them calling it a "research" program. The only thing they're currently researching is how to convince Japanese kids to eat nasty-tasting, rubbery, fishy whale meat.

Egalitarian: oh and I've heard that younger Japanese people don't like the taste of whale meat and the population isn't clamoring for huge amounts of the stuff. The government has whale meat served up in school cafeterias to artificially inflate demand. One of those bullshiat nationalist issues.

Yeah, it's true. Whale meat was cheap to purchase in the post-war period before Japan's economic turn around in the 70's. So a lot of older Japanese still feel nostalgic about it. But the kids are raised on beef and hamburgers (go USA!) and don't particularly care about whale meat or the flavor.

I've heard that about some schools also trying to push whale meat, but like so many other controversial things in Japan, it's only among a very very small percentage of schools (probably less than 1%), but just enough to piss people off. Like the revisionist history textbooks.

Whale meat is still too expensive to incorporate into a school's lunch menu, so once the nationalism wears off (or wears thin), we'll see how much whale meat some school with only 25 kids in a town in backwater Hokkaido will keep on the menu in the long run.

Japanese nationalists are fond of doing this stuff. They know that Japanese general opinion frowns upon major rocking of the boat, so they do just enough to gain foreign exposure and then back off.

That's just the point: There aren't just a few thousand of them left, there are hundreds of thousands of them left. The most commonly hunted whale, the Minke, has an estimated World-wide population of 184,000 individuals, and only about a 1,000 are take each year.

It's sustainable.

Granted, there are species that are in serious trouble, like the Northern Right Whale, but they are protected from commercial whaling, and thus are outside of this conversation.

You might not like the idea of whaling, which is fine as you are entitled to your opinion. Having said that, I think your opinion may be based on incorrect information.

It never ceases to amaze me how people who think the killing of animals is wrong so glibly speak of killing fellow human beings.

Just astonishing.
