We win? Do we still have WW1 vets still alive? I thought the last US WW1 vet died 10 or so years ago (I keep seeing interviews he gave, seemed like a helluva guy), not sure if the UK still has any around since they sent far more men through the meat grinder. Any French vets still running around chasing skirts?

I need to kill me some WWI vets so I can get a greenlight.

I assume subby refers to the Allies. The Americans showed up late, as we were having breakfast.

To be fair, WW1 was a pretty disgusting war, and the Germans started it.

Treize26 and Castro:

It was a gridlock anyway. We "doughboys" showed up fresh (due to breakfast) and caused the armistice.

Well, you could RTFA:

The death of the infantryman who later became a judge means that there are only four Great War veterans left from the major powers of Europe - three British and one French.

IIRC, there was a story recently about the penultimate French WWI veteran dying, so perhaps (dare I say it?) the French are in fact the LAST to surrender?

Just to let you all know, that is the normal sentence structure for krautish (german)

grinningdeamon: The death of the infantryman who later became a judge means that there are only four Great War veterans left from the major powers of Europe - three British and one French.

Pfft. English. Who needs that. I'm never going to England.

To be fair, I was reading up on the Scientology vs. Anonymous hubbub, which has proven infinitely more entertaining.

I'm expecting a lot of tasteless jokes here, as well as some thin-skinned ninnies telling people to 'have more respect' (which I always thought was funny, considering that a large part of FARK is, well, making fun of dead people).

My take? I dunno much about WWI to be honest - and that kinda saddens me. In a year or two, there likely won't be anyone left alive who experienced it first hand, and I feel like a big part of history is gonna die with them.

From TFA:
The German army's Military Research Institute was unable to shed more light on his military career.

"In Germany such an event doesn't have the same kind of significance as it does in other countries," said institute spokesman Bernhard Chiari.

"Any form of commemoration of military events is seen as problematic here.

I've always found this odd. Maybe this Erich Kaestner fellow was a complete douchebag, but even so it would be rather irrelevant. Were the rank-and-file German infantrymen not just as much heroes as any of the Allies? They answered their country's call and many paid with their lives. They weren't the ones scheming behind the scenes. This was several generations before TV and any form of fast-traveling news too (at least for 'normal' people), so who knows what they really thought they were fight for?

Anyway, RIP, Mr. Kaestner.

/ Gonna go read a history book.

In the future, individual forum posts will be labeled with both the areas of expertise and personality characteristics of posters so that, say, the "stock broker" or "soccer mom" beside user names will give others an idea of how seriously to take them.

There will also be special, user-generated tags. I can think of several to describe this subby.

Wheres the Hero tag??

Tatsumaki Senpuu-Kyaku!: My take? I dunno much about WWI to be honest

Basically it boils down to several European countries being jackasses to each other, essentially carrying on the tradition they'd established from hundreds of years prior. That said, in WWI at least, the Germans weren't the jackasses that they were in WWII, so I have no problem referring to them as heroes as well. They were just on the other side of the line from us.

If I know them, they're confused and trying to seduce women with the temptation of nylons and a Hershey bar.

sigo1212: Just to let you all know, that is the normal sentence structure for krautish (german)

It's correct sentence structure for German, but they're translating into English, which obviously has different rules than German. It's like if I translated an English phrase into German, it wouldn't work to keep the same English sentence structure - you need to rework it.

I ran this particular phrase through a couple permutations of Babelfish and ended up with this:
Ich glaube meiner Scheiße von Hose

"I believe my shiat of trousers"

Language translation technology isn't quite there yet.

This is how ALL wars should be fought.

1) War declared

2) Do nothing

3) Whomever has the last citizen alive who was at least 18 when war was declared wins.

Finally, an exit strategy for the Middle East!
