Nothing shows your free-spirited individuality and devil-may care outlook on the world like a government-issued vanity license plate.

What is it about Virginia and vanity plates. I have a client there that I visit rather often. I've never seen so many vanity plates in one state.

"For me, it's also my right to be patriotic," says Herwerth, a retired police officer from Hauppauge, N.Y., who says he was so shaken by the 9/11 terrorist attacks that he has driven a red, white and blue car ever since.

I'm moving to NC, where vanity plates can have up to 8 characters, so I'm really getting a kick, blah, blah, blah.

Actually, if you have at least 1 number in there, vanity plates don't cost extra in IL.

"License plates were never designed to be billboards," explains Debra Hillmer, the motor vehicle division's director. She said state rules banning offensive messages on license plates are subjective.

I agree with this. I think vanity plates are pretty stupid. The only ones I actually like are the creative ones that manage to sneak in something really obscene. Otherwise they just make the people who have them seem like self-important assholes.

FTFA: In Arizona, where most of the license plates are made at a state prison, inmates have alerted officials to letter and number combinations that carry drug or gang connotations

I thought the rule went "snitches get stitches". Really now, if we can't trust prison inmates, who can we trust?

75 dollars is not a lot?

Colorado's personalized plates must be a steal:
Designer: $60 application fee; $50 renewal
Regular: $35 application fee; $25 renewal

Illinois' personalized plates
Designer: $94 application fee; $13 + normal annual registration
Regular: $47 application fee; $7 + normal annual registration

Virginia
Personalized plates cost just $10 a year in addition to the vehicle registration and special plate fees.

\Are we talking about Vanity plates(special designs) or personalized(custom text)?

Dirt cheap, actually--just an extra $10 on your registration fee.

It's not just vanity plates, either--Virginia has probably the biggest assortment of "specialty" plates of any state going. You name the organization/cause, odds are the VA DMV has a plate for it. It's to the point where you can't recognize the plates as being "Virginian", which kind of defeats the point, I thought.

Vanity plates are the ghey

You still see a lot of the driver's intitals with that "special number that means something to me" on the old folks here in Ohiya. For example, if George Bush lived here, his plates would be somthing like GWB 911

I like vanity plates. They allow me to quickly identify the douchebags (if their driving hasn't done that already).

Having said that, if you have to have a license plate and pay for the "privilege," why shouldn't you get to have it say what you want?
