And someone explain to me why MMORPGs charge money for the boxed product in addition to the monthly fee? Why not sell the game at cost of materials? They'll make it up quickly with monthly fees.

Obviously the business model for a company like EA/ID/Blizzard is to make money on the retail sale as they support online gaming for free. But EQ? Isnt a $50 sticker throwing away the chance to sink thier nefarious hooks into unsuspecting potential customers?

With the cost of games now ($50+) does anyone buy anything on a whim anymore?

I have never played EQ/UO or any such but if the boxed product cost $10 w/ a free month of gaming, I'd try it out. Who knows, I might get hooked and end up spending the $100+/yr subscription.

It never ceases to amaze me how biatchy some people get as soon as something negative is said about Evercrack.

Drgeoffrey the people at EQ Widows are just people that don't want to hear the other side of the story. Try and post something there that is slightly against how they believe and you won't see it posted. EQ is fun to play... its the person behind the machine that is most likely an addictive type of person. EQ is just long and indepth.

Real life takes up to much of my time...

Yeah, that CBS thing put EverQuest in SUCH a bad light... they found some guy that plays 20 hours a week. And they made him seem like a farking addict! How many jocks watch football EVERY SUNDAY AFTERNOON? Its the same thing, Except one involves lots of beer and yelling, and the other involves virtual beer and killing stuff. stupid farktard asshats at CBS... And then the kid that "Comitted suicide" over EQ? Doesnt help that he was a Depressed Paranoid Schizo Epileptic, who HAD SEVEN SEIZURES playing EQ (and mommy didnt care)... But CBS forgot to mention that.

Ah well, cheating at a video game is pretty pathetic, but damn you could make some good money off of it. Accounts used to go for $500-1000, a piece.

wow Cubicle-slave, you are one of the most intelligent people I have found that talk about MMORPGs. All the rest are DaoC (Blatant EQ rip off, yipee!) nerds, of UO losers (The graphics suck, it hurts my eyes just to think about it). And then there are the "EQ addicts"... Sheesh, its just stupid people! Its like knives... People cut themselves with knives all the time, like people play EQ a lot. But you never hear about it until it gets serious. It was still tons of fun, and frankly most of the people I know suck. People suck, games are more fun. Whats wrong with not wanting to interact with people that just make you want to kill them?

And I just realized I compared a game to a knife. Shut up.

Begoggle: That's really why I quit and haven't touched an MMORPG since then. These games draw in ALL kinds, and that really doesn't make for a good playing experience. You get plenty of people who have a completely different playing style, people who you really have no desire to associate with. And obviously the company that made and maintains the game is going to do their best to cater to ALL customers, primarily the ones who are most numerous and easiest to please.

Actually Everquest is based on a MUD called Sojourn, also been known as Toril and Faerun. The MUD is supposedly as addicting as Everquest, as my older brother sinks about 8+ hours a day into it. We actually calculated it once based on his playing time since the MUD opened. Seriously, it averaged 8 hours a day.

My Evercrack-addicted boyfriend should sell some of his platinum hoard so he can pay me back the $1400 he owes me.

EQ Widows - that's the most fun I've had at a site since, well, Stileproject.com. I bet if those widows looked halfway decent and didn't biatch so much they wouldn't have to compete with a video game for their husband's attention.

Hey Widows, lose a few pounds and dust those cobwebs out from between your legs.. maybe he'll consider spending his evenings with you instead of a Level 30 Dark Elf Sword Maiden.

DAOC > EQ

2002-10-22 11:24:24 PM
I played EQ for about two years, and stopped after my grades went down the crapper, and after the thousandth hour of killing those goddamn gnolls in Paw. Then I went on to DAoC, it was good, had its flaws, and now I've moved on to Battlefield 1942.

BF'42 is a pretty cool game. They just need to address a few major problems and that game will kick ass... way better than World War II online.

Lobsterboy, Yea, the depiction of the kid who killed himself because of EQ was pretty shakey. From the looks of his apartment the guy was clearly depressed. My guess is the guy had an EQ "girlfriend" that dumped him which on top of his clinical depression pushed him over the edge. It could have just as well happened due to chatting with people on AOL.

As a new father of a one year old boy, I did sympathize with Ben Stein's concern with his son playing too much EQ. A kid the age of his son has too much real-world growing & learning to be doing without such a huge time sink in the way.

20 hrs. a week for a guy with a full time job and two kids and a wife is a lot of time. I feel guilty about getting an hour a day to myself to play motoGP on XBL.

Damn, I have never met anyone who plays Everquest. No one is willing to pay the monthly fees. However, it seems to be the king of addictive games. That's scary. Have a friend who does nothing but play Diablo. Him and his girlfriend. Neither of them work right now. And they sit there and play. Always. For about a year now. It drives me nuts. If Everquest is worse, I hope I never see it.

Die you eq lamer gamer bastards who have never received a hummer in your life and never will!

2002-10-23 02:20:40 AM
By coincidence I was talking to a friend at work today about Evercrack. He apparently played for two years and quit. 6 months later, he opened his account again and sold his stuff at an online auction. He made over a thousand bucks off his virtual possessions and platinum buckazoids. Crazy.

Dizzie: At least you didn't give $1400 to someone that used the money to fly to Russia and dump you. Guys are idiots...
She wasn't a mail order bride going home, either. (I can see that joke coming) :-/

Haha VegasVinnie, t must have been a mail order bride going somewhere other than home!

Sorry, felt like it was appropriate.

Sojourn? It's nothing like Everquest. One of the best MUDs ever made though. Everquest is not based on any MUD, but the base gameplay is loosely based on DIKU code, which is loosely based of D&D.

Nostradamus predicted this all.

"And the Economy of the MMORPGs will falter, as will the social skills of the human race." Chapter 185 Lines 66-67.

As an EQ addict, I can safely say that I prefer this lifestyle over a real-life style. I'd rather live in a fantasy world where I can slay dragons and cast spells than live in a real world where people can piss me off and I can deal with all the bad things in life. No way. Give me EQ over going outside.

can u spare a few pp plz thx

Playing an online RPG is no worse than watching t.v., reading a book, or any other activity meant pass the time as we wait for something better to come along. Yes, I play the MUD Dragonrealms. I also have a full-time job, I have a part-time band, and I write in my spare time. I travel frequently. The only thing I don't do is watch t.v. (except for football, of course). I just don't see why some of you are freaking out over this (i.e. "Get a fvciking life everquest fvcks! Do something outside!" etc.). Inhale...exhale. Inhale...exhale. There you go!

cool Yagisencho, what server in AC did/do you play on? Most here seem to be Evercamp players. :P

The issue with macros is that they do repetitive actions for far longer than a normal player would be expected to. People let macro's run while they are doing other real life activities, and in this case, artificially inflates the economy. Kind of like if counterfeiting was legal.

Having been there, and done that with MMORPG's.....they really are a waste of time, at least in my experience. Care to read about just how bad it can get? Go to my site http://home.nycap.rr.com/focal , and read "My Truth"

"shiat, Gabe, reading was never supposed to be for everybody. Universal literacy is virtually an American invention. Novels are for people who are comfortable using their brains, and we all know that isn't the whole human race. I'm not one of those guys who says, "Well, at least they're reading... "
Reading garbage is no better than watching garbage on TV or any other pointless time-filler. Garbage is garbage, whether it comes on a page or in a game cartridge. Anybody who wants to waste their lives on Digi-Poke-God-Knows-What is welcome to; I'm not gonna biatch. Better that than supporting the aforementioned shiatty fantasies that crowd the good stuff off the shelves.

If this makes me sound like an elitist snob, it's only because I am. "

And by extention, non-garbage is non-garbage, whether it comes printed on paper or burned to CD.

EQ's still a lot of trash, though. :D

Actually, Planes of Power is NOT the final expansion. They'll be having another one about this time next year. Not that I care. I quit that lame game when I quit working for that lame company.
