Let's see a massively multiplayer world where money never leaves... of course money will build up. Anyone who plays it knows that very little money leaves the game and huge amounts enter it. Guilds seem to have a tendency to absorb a lot of it and never use it. I would think that if new players stopped joining it inflation would go through the roof. And no, I don't play the game, but I've lost friends to it.

If it's an exploit in the game, the exploit needs to be fixed and anyone abusing the exploit needs to get their accounts removed.

It's Verant's problem that they didn't do the math correctly on their trade crafts, or allow people to use macros and don't monitor account activity as much as they should.

The guys at Mythic's DAOC have fixed this a long time ago, and it's just one of many reasons it's a superior game. As soon as an exploit like this is found, it's patched immediately, and anyone taking advantage of it gets their stuff taken away. If you're caught trying to run a cheat program or macro, your account gets suspended.

I prefer DAOC for that reason, along with the lack of morons continually shouting "LFG! LFG!" and "HAIL AND WELL MET".

If running a macro is cheating, then the game is broken. The challenge of playing a game is not supposed to be the challenge of mastering its user interface. All macros do is simplify the interface.

If you weren't supposed to be able to repeat something 1,000 times, the game should have placed a limit on how many times you could do it, or how often, or it should have cost something.

A cheat is some mechanism that allows you to break the games rules. For example, a sequence of refreshes or resubmits that duplicated an item.

I think the reason they are getting pissy, is cause this macro is basically doing duping. Duping platinum from small piles into huge ones while running a macro. Maybe each time the dupe is done, it only dupes 20% of the pile, thus people wanna run macros overnight to get large sums instead of doing it themselves the whole time.

I would know, I dont play EQ.. although I used too.

I've read a couple articles in gaming magazines, and I say as far as MMO games go, Old and Busted: Everquest. Newer and Less Busted: DAOC. New Hotness: The Sims Online. That game is going to kick a$$. I've always wanted to own a Roxbury-like club, and now on The Sims Online I can do it. The only thing keeping me from buying it right on the day when it's released is that I'd like to wait a while for a sizable user base to build up. It's no fun playing if your town is a total ghost town.

JoelKatz, just because it's "allowed" doesn't mean that using the bug over and over is right. Cheating and exploiting are synonymous in the gaming world.

Personally, I believe that people willing to shell out cash for virtual platinum pieces should spend that money on a prostitute instead. :D

I have been playing EQ for around 2 years and this kinda crap saddens me.
It's entertainment, damnit, not a way you should increase RL wealth
I'm not sure who's worse, the people that sell game money for real $ or the ones that pay real $ for game dollars.

I have made 2500$ playing Diablo 2 over the last 6 months. That is without using "macros" or any other hack. It made the game so much more fun then anything else.

The article is not clear, but it sounds like the "exploit" is simply to repeat a legitimate move over and over. If a move is legitimate once, it's legitimate a dozen times. If the move was not meant to be repeated, it would have cost something or there would have been some limit on how often you could do.

The article implies that using a macro is cheating and that playing games consists of pushing the same buttons over and over and the challenge is endurance.

Sorry if I sound like a prick, but I literally lost one of my best friends to this shiat. We all did. He went from being a great, outgoing guy with a lot of friends to a pale, boring slob as his days and nights were spent doing nothing but camping out waiting for a computer bone.
And since we lost him, I've met numerous other people who have lost significant-others and best friends to this game. It may be a generalization to say that all eq players lose their real lives, but the membership of goups like Everquest Widows tell me that it is very common indeed.

I've spent two months of 'real-world' time in Asheron's Call since its launch three years ago. This averages out to around 75 minutes per day. Friends call me an addict, and I won't deny it. But these same friends normally watch one professional sports match per day (90-180 minutes). *shrug*

When I first got Everquest I played it all the time. I would get so damn pissed off at the lag when I was chasing gnolls through Black Burrow and shout at the screen like "Dammit you goddam piece of shiat!" cuz the gnoll would reappear a mile away next to 20 of his friends.

Eventually I stopped playing it becuase it was so incredible repetitive.

Console gaming is quite new, yet it is running into the same problems that PC gamers have been dealing with all along. Problem is, the current crop of online games cannot be patched. I am playing SOCOM: Navy SEALs and besides gaining first hand experience with LAG, I've seen (and tried) wall walkers --people who utilize a glitch that allows them to enter the hills and mountains that border the game area. On the bright side, most people don't utilize the cheat and often vote off those that use it.

Interesting.

Having played EQ for a year and a half from day one, and having been a part of their volunteer customer service, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that the way trade skills are set up is such that you should not be able to profit significantly without dealing with another game player. When I played, there was no known item that was both 1.) creatable from component parts that were all available at the same vendor and 2.) worth more money than the components.

So if you wanted to, say, take a clay pot and sell it, you'd have to buy some clay, buy some water, go to a kiln, make a pot (and potentially fail), go back to the vendor, sell the pot and make no profit or a negative profit. Or, you buy a gold bar, enchant it, buy an emerald, put them in a jewelling kit, make a magic ring, and sell it to a player for a profit. Or, buy a bear pelt from a player (or kill bears yourself), buy a tunic pattern, tailor a patchwork tunic, and sell to a vendor or player for a profit. So the model is that you lose money to raise your skill, then interact to make a profit. Macros are useless because you can't use them to interact.

This exploit (if you can even really call it that) means Verant goofed. It seems like a lot of things make it into the game without being considered by the people who know it; there can't be very good communication between the developers. So someone slipped up and put in an item recipe -- probably something unassuming, like a diamond necklace -- that can be made ad infinitum for a profit while standing in one place. It's the dev's fault that this made it in, the players shouldn't be punished, except that Verant likes to randomly take certain actions and make them punishable without cause or explanation... and especially without establishing what is acceptable and what is not.

Thanks for the link. I didnt know there was such a film coming out.

But even though I like William Gibson's work (heck, I even bought signed copies of Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties off ebay) this film sounds mega dull.

Unless I'm completely missing the point, a documentary about Gibson and his vision of the cultural near-future does not seem a likely candidate for compelling cinema...

EQ takes too much time and money to play. If I was 13 I'd probably play it though...
