Under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 it is an offence to conceal or keep possession of salvaged goods from a wrecked ship or to fail to report any cargo found.

Are you serious? If it washes up on shore it should be fair game. Shouldn't it?

She sells sawmill sea salvage by the sea shore.

How can you tax something like that? can't have people going around keeping what they find. they might start getting ideas about freedom.

Madness is what people are willing to pay to have their floors done in this salvaged hardwood. I'd be hauling it out if I had the infrastructure. It's sunken gold, baby.

Actually in England everything that washes on shore technically belongs to the crown.

Its a thorny legal issue all right. I'll need to refer to the cases of Finders v. Keepers.

Too bad Bruno Gerussi and Robert Clothier are both dead, this would be right up their alley.

All that wood is probably warped anyway.

Close - but not quite.

..."people taking items off the beach are, in effect, stealing property from its owners.

The law covers all items, large or small, and any wreckage that remains unclaimed after a year belongs to the Crown.

However, finders who report wreckage to the receiver have salvage rights. Salvors, as these people are called, may be able to claim a reward. This is based on the value of the salved property."

Absolutely gutted. The ship went down juat off the coast where I live - the cargo went 80 miles downstream before coming ashore.

All I got was a shoe and a dead shark.

The headline made me think of an episode of Dirty Jobs (or How it's Made, I can't remember what show exactly). Lumber from cargo ships during the Civil War would fall off the boats (or the boats sunk), and these guys went in with scuba gear, and hauled it up. They would take this well-preserved, old growth wood, and cut it into veneers to sell, or make furniture out of it. It was pretty cool.

Find the material, load it up in your truck and give the company a choice of buying it back from you (at salvage cost, which means manhours, gas, shiping to the company, and related costs) or ask them to simply give you the wood as payment. Most likely, they'll just ask you to keep the wood.. that's better anyways, because it's hard to get money off a company that owes in too many directions. You'd be waiting a long time to cash in.

The reason the finders keepers "law" isn't used here is because if your ship was carrying something you shouldn't automatically be denied ownership just because your ship went down. Otherwise, folks would just sabotage boats, cause them to sink, and take all the goodies. They'd probably go to a port, and work ship to ship, making them all ready to sink soon.. then wait for them to go, and rush in to loot it. These days that's less likely to happen, but in the old days, it's not like you'd get caught... accidents happen.

It also means that if you clean up your own "spill" you won't have to pay salvagers to help clean up the mess.

If the government cleans up your mess, you'll be paying for salvage.
