Scapegoat.

Yes, it was dumb and all. But you can't tell me the editor was singularly responsible from conception to print.

No, but he singularly could have stopped it. In fact, it's in his job description.

You know as they say in "the biz" when one door closes another opens - that is if you time your putt correctly with the windmill's blades. Sure you may have to spend a couple decades editing in the "minors" but eventually you can work back to Ball Collector: The Bi-Monthly Newsletter For Driving Range Management.

Good! Because you know a noose means one and only one thing, and has been used for one and only one horrible purpose in all of recorded history.

People are stupid.

Does this mean we can go back to pretending to be outraged at Don Imus? Is Al Sharpton happy now that the anchor has been suspended? This incident allowed him to be in the spotlight, he got more publicity, and ultimately, this incident makes him richer, which is all he ever wanted. Maybe Al can offer to pay Tiger's remaining tuition at Stanford, should he ever go back and finish his degree.

The one question is how does Jesse Jackson profit from all of this? Should we protest until the golf channel gives his sons a brewery or something? How about Saranac or Red Tail? I think that'd be fair.

This is idiocy of the highest order.

Tiger didn't even find it offensive.

I've seen the cover. The context actually was completely opinion-free. It was merely showing a noose because there was a story about a noose comment.

The context is the 'lynching' of a golf commentator for making a stupid comment about Tiger Woods that even he did not find offensive.

Now they took the noose away. What's next? Oreo cookies?

Wow, so it's even less offensive than depicting a rope after a lynching performed on someone of any color? I mean, the "context" refers to an ill-timed and unfunny joke.

That article was so full of CYA, corporate doublespeak, my brain asploded.

Stupid stupid stupid.
My gf explained how many people something like this goes through. The editor is a scapegoat. She thought it shouldn't have been put on the cover and was done in bad taste.

I simply thought the whole issue was stupid. I mean it isn't like they had a flaming cross the cover in front of anyone's house.

Watermelons and Fried chicken are really the way to go in this instance...

Well yeah the editor is the scapegoat, that's the person who is SUPPOSED to say "this shouldn't be on the cover, it's in bad taste" and didn't.

But then again, Tiger isn't black.

/No, bright guys, he's not white either...

not to mention it calls to mind the "give someone enough rope to hang themselves" saying.

IlGreven: But then again, Tiger isn't black.

not to mention the fact that for several of the peak KKK years, more white people were lynched than black.

Hell, by legal definition in CA, lynching is the part where you take the person from state custody by means of a riot.

Eventually everyone in the entire world will have lost their jobs through some sort of ripple effect from this comment, one that Tiger doesn't even give two shiats about.

...and I'm still trying to work up a decent reference that involves nooses and sacking editors responsible for the credits.

2008-01-18 05:04:34 PM
What you fail to realize is that this was the toned down version...
They probably wanted Tiger's head in the noose.

/lazy journalism sucks

You mean to tell me that nobody at the mag even suggested that this might not be the way to go. It could be be a lack of a diverse editing team at the magazine.

Because different skin colors = editorial diversity

Just in case there's someone out there that has been living in a cave and didn't get the word - nooses are now a racist icon:

1. Swastikas
2. Burning crosses
3. Confederate flags
4. Nooses

It's a pretty short list.

Good. That editor should have been fired. The original comment was harmless and an obvious mistake. This was deliberate, exploitative and crass. It was orders of magnitude worse and the person who could have put a stop to it didn't. They were loving the controversy when it went to press. They thought it was good publicity. They simply reaped what they had sown.

Fark them. Good riddance to the editor.
