How can he call the cops back if he's already in custody? He's probably used his only phone call to either a. his lawyer, or b. his driver.

Also, in the earlier thread, someone said a shot was fired elsewhere, while the white-van guys were already in custody. But I ain't seen that anywhere- where's the followup there?

Dial "s" for sniper.

Can you hear me now? Good.
Can you hear me now? Good.
Can you hear me now? Good.
Can you hear me now? Go*KA-BLAM*

This is like in Jaws, where he sees the school of fish. And thinks its the shark. But see, it isnt.

This sniper fella is playing the police like a fiddle. . .

Dear Sniper:

Quit making us look like asshats.

Thanks,
The cops.

Dear Cops:

Ha ha.

The Sniper

yeah, sure it was garbled. uh huh. Let me ask you this, when was the last time anyone here had a "garbled" phone call from someone in a metropolitan area? Rarely, if ever anymore.

They just found out what kind of phone he was using and now they need another call to track him down better.

2002-10-21 06:58:08 PM
what about Caller ID, duh!

2002-10-21 06:58:49 PM
Caller ID???

2002-10-21 07:00:15 PM
"...and while you're at it, we seem to have misplaced your Social Security number. Can you call us and give us that, too?"

2002-10-21 07:00:22 PM
Wonder what kind of phone he's using, seems it would be smart to use a stolen cell phone perhaps?

2002-10-21 07:00:50 PM
The media is speculating that the sniper used a recording. The cops couldn't hear the recording clearly over the phone.

Havent they seen the countless terrorirst/kidnapper/bankrobber movies. This is like asking for more time "to get that kind of money together", or "to get a helicopter to the airport". Usually the bad guy kills someone to get his point across that they are out of time. I wouldnt be suprised if someone died today/tommorrow.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks more and more that this looks like a re-make of the original Dirty Harry.....

2002-10-21 07:03:14 PM
It is nice what the police are doing to innocents:

" "After he opened the door, they said something to him and they had guns pointed at him, and then one of the guys went into van through the sliding door and pulled the guy out through the sliding door."

" "They slammed him on the ground and put handcuffs on him." "

2002-10-21 07:06:23 PM
IT'S A TRAP!

2002-10-21 07:06:38 PM
Sniper: "Hello, Hello, can you hear me?"

Cops: "Can't hear you, it's garbled!"

Sniper: "Okay, I am driving towards the nearest cell phone tower I see. Can you hear me now?"

Cops: "We are getting some of it, but it's garbled."

Sniper: "shiat. Okay, now I am going to walk out and sit on the base of the nearest cell phone tower I see. Can you hear me now?"

Cops: "Nope, still garbled." [can you believe the asshat is falling for this? The old garbled message trick?]

Sniper: "shiat, this isn't working. Can you give me an adress where I might turn up at a specified time and call you?"

Cops: "If it isn't too much trouble, could you show up at the pay phone at the junction of Elm and Maple? At the gas station?"

Sniper: "You got it."

2002-10-21 07:09:27 PM
Idling a van that may or may not fit the description of the snipers mode of transportation does not justify getting the beat down from the police. Plus the sniper has never been at a gas station, the sniper has been shooting people at stations, from a distance away. Would it make sense to be at the actual station? The media description of the people being taken into custody sounds pretty vicious, so I hope the two victims file a lawsuit against the DC police.

2002-10-21 07:10:37 PM
I just love how CNN anchors would come up with some speculation this morning and run with it as if it were the real current info, straight from Moose's mouth, until some real info came in and made them look like asshats.

"The two potential snipers, who may have been working together... we have a new report into CNN Action McNews, apparently both suspects aren't the sniper. We'll continue giving you updates on the possible snipers right after this message..."

I can't see Fox Snooze being much better, quite frankly. News-entertainment rules!

2002-10-21 07:10:37 PM
TJohnson! Right on!

Such bullshiat.

2002-10-21 07:11:22 PM
Yeah, the only "asshats" in this equation are these cops.

Keystone Kops.

Bunch of clowns.

They will only get this guy when he wants to be caught.

2002-10-21 07:12:05 PM
DC cops + the FBI + the sheriff's office = a bunch of fat lazy morons!! cant catch one guy?!?

sniper = guy that probably isn't trying that hard to evade the police. I bet he is reading this forum right now!!....eatin a bag of cheetos, scoping his next target and ventilating some soccer mom's head!!!

it is sad but the sniper will never get caught unless he lets them catch him!!!

2002-10-21 07:13:07 PM
I think the sniper's doing what he's doing because he saw the word "asshat" used on Fark one too many times and snapped.

I know the feeling.

2002-10-21 07:15:53 PM
Is it just me or is this Officer Moose guy somehow related to Tim Meadows and/or Leon Phelps, The Ladies Man?

2002-10-21 07:16:15 PM
only an asshat would be sick of the term asshat, you asshat thorn.

Actually, I take back the Dirty Harry reference. It's really starting to remind me of an Alistair MacClean novel. I'd purely love to be a fly on the wall at Chief Moose's office:

[Caller]: "Chief, you've now seen that we can paralyze an entire metroplex as well as the surrounding countryside in just two weeks. It won't hurt our plans to tell you that we have done so with only four individuals. It also won't hurt to tell you that our entire team consists of over one hundred, and they have been strategically dispersed through over twenty of the nation's forty largest cities. We will execute our plan's second phase unless we are speaking with the President and his Treasury Secretary by noon tomorrow..."

2002-10-21 07:17:14 PM
The sniper shot at people when white trucks are around. He is not in a white truck. White trucks, being very commmon, require him to wait in hiding for only a short time before he gets on with his sniping activities.

*dials Mayor, I mean Captain Moose with hot tip

2002-10-21 07:17:14 PM
Ok, first, tracing is instantaneous. Has been for at least 20 years. The problem would probably be getting the info from the phone company fast enough for the police to actually get to the phone to arrest the guy.

Funny headline though. heh

2002-10-21 07:17:28 PM
Actually, I was eating candy corn, but.. D'OH!!!

2002-10-21 07:17:31 PM
Of course, depending on just how good this guy is at covering his tracks and tossing around red herrings, the cops might be seriously at wits end dealing with him. I mean, we're at a point now where the whole thing is turning into a bad Morgan Freeman movie, with the police chief communicating via press conferences while Freeman's character and his spunky young partner track clues and get this punk's replies.

Put it this way - I've lost almost all of my respect for the occupation due to the liberties some (many?) take with the power they're given, along with its place as an arm of the state, but I don't envy some of the people who fill those jobs and have to deal with buttwads like this. Still, someone has to do it, whether it's them or me.

No Mr Sniper, we are not setting up more electronic surveillence equipment to get a fix on your position. We would never do that. So you just go ahead and call us right back. Please don't use a stolen cellphone, that wouldn't be fair.

2002-10-21 07:19:31 PM
I wonder what Drew Curtis is more afraid of; the sniper, or the word assh_le?

2002-10-21 07:20:49 PM
It was nice of the cops to point out they would be using aircraft and the miltary to find him. Gave him the chance to move south. Good going cops. Hey saddam and Bin Laden, we will have a sniper outside your windows later today. Gee I wonder if they would move? IDIOTS!

2002-10-21 07:21:07 PM
since when does a suspect getting pulled out of a van and getting slammed to the ground constitute a beatdown?
did they use the baton on them or anything?
should the cops be polite when pulling out a suspect that may be responsible for the deaths of multiple strangers and might shoot at them?

"excuse me sir, but we were thinking that you might be the serial sniper. will you kindly step out of the van?...you don't have a gun or anything in there do you?....good. good.
we didn't think so. just checking..yaknow?"

2002-10-21 07:21:14 PM
To those insulting the cops:

If you're driving a white van in the DC area, police surrond you with shotguns and scream at you for 5 minutes to get out of the van, and you refuse, f*ck yea they should handcuff your ass.
I'm willing to bet none of you whining about civil rights live in the area.

2002-10-21 07:22:48 PM
Asshöle?

2002-10-21 07:23:40 PM
Drew was tormented as a youth by school bullies using the word assh__e - so the sniper got nothing on them....

2002-10-21 07:24:11 PM
You gotta hand it to that Charlton Heston, he's one smart guy to have thought this one up. And then to have pulled it off so successfully.

2002-10-21 07:24:24 PM
Safe to say the sniper won't be calling from a pay phone, while sitting in his white van.

2002-10-21 07:24:39 PM
Thank you, Bobnoxious. Was about to make the same point. People forget that all that crap in the movies is so fake. The worst was where there was this sort of count down where the got the first number 5, then the little dial spins some more, and they get the second number 55, and so on until they get 555-5555. It just doesn't work that way.

2002-10-21 07:26:19 PM
This sniper is playing with these cops like a lion toying with a baby hyena. Rip off a leg. Watch it thrash around. Make it bleed a little bit more. Etc. Amazing that one or two people could manipulate hundreds of law enforcement personnel so completely.

sorry but when my house/car is invaded by a bunch of guys with guns, my first instinct isnt to jump out. no ones is.

So now white vans are being persecuted.

This is the exact same argument as not wanting to "BAN" anything (gay sex, marijuana, judaism), because next time its going to be something of yours they go after, and you wont be so happy when they break down the door of your gay love shack A135792.

I doubt the men who were arrested today will be filing any lawsuits. They were both illegal aliens and are currently being deported.

Welcome to John Asscrap's America. PULEEEZE, Dems, run someone other than Gephardt, Kennedy or Gore...

Then the Mexican government can file a diplomatic protest... and insist on "drug inspection" for every single vehicle going north... How much of our produce and goods come from Mexico now?

JD142, oh good, thought I would get flak for that. I've always known this to be true.
