"We can't walk down the hallway without someone yelling, 'Herpes!'" said senior wrestler Zane Atkins.

Gutsy, since I would assume people on the wrestling team could beat most of them senseless, and probably will at some point.

After one to make a point, it might stop, at least to their faces.

This high school is 5 miles from my house. I heard nothing. Not even the anguished cry of every female in Gustine (all 50 of them) begging their pharmacist for Valtrex, nor the vice-principal getting sodomized by the wrestling team in an out of the way almond orchard.

I wonder if that Principal has ever heard of HIPAA and realizes that he and the school could be at huge liability. Regardless of whether he named them or not he has to assure anonymity of the individual to the level of state. Since it had to be someone in the school I don't think he passed the test.

For almost a week, they've felt ostracized at their own school.

Just a week? Must be nice. I had assholes make shiat up about me as early as 1st grade that I had to put up with right through my senior year, occasionally about teachers. I note the utter lack of news articles to raise awareness of my plight.

I find I have a hard time sympathizing with the jocks in this matter.

That said, as a professional in an educational system, that Assistant Principal is a complete asshat who needs to be made an example of, an immediate ex-Assistant Principal, pour encourager les autres to remember what the law says about confidentiality and about who is and who isn't allowed to practice medicine.

A sibling of mine got herpes from a mat in gym class in high school. He wasn't even on the wrestling team. Although that form of herpes is pretty tame, he gets a very mild outbreak on his forearms and stomach about every 8 years or so. Its usually gone after a week. No biggie.

Ahh... the days of ring-worm infested wrestling mats.

Our coaches cure: rub the rash with sandpaper and apply a bleach-drenched paper towel to the wound. That way, the ref won't notice the rash and you won't be disqualified. Offer not valid for darkies.

The best part was all the hot chicks from the aerobics class used our mats for aerobics when they were wearing daisy dukes. They got the same rashes, which led to many accusations of nonexistant promiscuity.

I'm here to agree with MooseUpNorth.

Small town in SW Louisiana born and raised, and I had to deal with things my written in my senior yearbook (published, not written by hand by ass tards, TYVM) that happened in first, third and sixth grade.

And yes, it was usually the jocks, their friends, and their whorish girlfriends.

Went back to visit that town for Christmas. It was nice bragging about my job, my degree, living in Dallas, and loving life to the same people who all live in the same shiatty town, and are all divorced several times living in shiatty houses, going to the same shiatty football games on Friday nights.

And one, when he asked me how life was, and I told him, had the farking audacity to bring up the same... old... shiat... I guess just to remind himself of a time when he thought he was better than me.

Long story short? fark these guys. Let them get a taste of what they have most likely been dishing out to the small wormy guys that will end up happier and more successful in the long run. Oh, and fark the school officials for doing what they did, but still, I hate them all.

USAF_Farker: my brother had shingles, which is a form of herpes

Well...not exactly. I got shingles almost a year ago, and I'm still dealing with residual nerve pain. Shingles is farking nasty. It's a reactivation of chickenpox virus, after it lies dormant in your nerves. Usually it happens in older people. The doctor was a bit surprised a 38 year-old (me) came down with it.

From the Wiki (new window):
" It is caused by varicella zoster virus (VZV), which is also the virus that causes chickenpox. After a chickenpox infection the virus can lodge permanently in nerve cell bodies without causing any symptoms, although it is not known exactly how this happens. At times of reduced immuno-competence, years or decades later, the virus may break out of nerve cell bodies and travel down nerve axons to cause viral infection of the skin in the region of the nerve. The nerve cell bodies of dorsal root, cranial nerve or autonomic ganglion may contain the latent virus,[1] and the virus may spread from one or more ganglia along nerves of an affected segment and infect the corresponding dermatome causing a shingles rash.[2][3] Although the rash usually heals within two to four weeks, some sufferers experience residual nerve pain for months or years, a condition called postherpetic neuralgia.[1]"

It sucks. Trust me.

I had the extreme pleasure of having shingles last spring at the age of 32. My doctor was quite surprised that I got it at that age. Funny thing (although not for her), she got it a few months later, also in her thirties.

I was wondering the same thing. Given the number of people who use the mats, it should be standard practice to spray them down with a sanitizer every day and between populations (between when the wrestlers use it and the cheerleaders use it, etc.)

I can think of 2 reasons why it might not be done: 1) expense, 2) laziness.

The article doesn't attribute diagnoses to anyone other that a doctor, Subtard.

However this gem from TFA (consecutive sentences, yet) is indicative:

[Assistant principal] Bussard had no comment and said he had been instructed to refer all questions to the district office.

"It was the best knowledge we had at the time," [Superintendent] McWilliams said. "As for any additional info, I wasn't there, so I don't know if I'm the best person to talk to."

Those at the scene have to refer questions up the ladder, and those higher-ups plead ignorance since they weren't at the scene.
Your tax dollars at work...

Well that wasn't very bright of the assistant principal. Especially considering a staph infection is probably a lot more likely from what they described. Wonder if there any chance he'll be punished for it.

I'm going to have to agree with the "little sympathy" folks. I was given shiat by the jocks all through middle and high school because I had flat feet etc. (which precludes most sports that involve any kind of running) and didn't see the fun in sustaining lifelong injuries in the name of extremely temporary "glory." Maybe I'm just dumb though.

Half of the jackasses that were doing it would probably have tried to kill themselves if they were subjected to what they gave the "outcasts" at my school on a daily basis, some of their egos seemed a bit fragile. I normally wouldn't wish that kind of ridicule on people, but turnabout is fail play and all that.
