kenbob: It's nice to be 46 and married, wifey don't care that I don't have a hot bod as long as I bring home a hot pay cheque, bring on the Molsen's.

You're in Canada and don't know how to spell Molson?? Yikes.

Great beer though, compared to the American stuff. Oldest brewery in North America, as well. Sad that the name is lost forever in the corporate world though. Stupid Miller-Coors.

NO! BAD DOG! *rubs AirForceVet's face in his speedo*

Dude Trappist Beers are so freaking good. I love Chimay....I've got a friend who brews beer who found a kit online for brewing the Trappist WestVleteren not sure if it's the 12 or how it turns out but he promised me a couple bottles so we will see.

Yeah, but what about the ALCOHOL content? Are all them "light" beers short on the good part?

2008-01-16 02:43:22 PM
xpostal: Pretty yummy and has 10% alcohol so it knocks you on your butt after a few.
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

There sure is a lot of BB BCS love on Fark lately.

// agrees, 1 6 pack of that and you are toast.

St00pidN00b: The only halfway-decent beer they recommend as a "Pick" is Guinness Draught

Redhook IPA is a great beer. Didn't realize it was low-cal.

As far as other light beers, Skinny Dip is good. It's from the New Belgium Brewery, the same people that make Fat Tire.

I hope you're not kidding...b/c Iron City is the shiat. Too bad I have to go to Chantilly or Northeast DC to get it...

Guinness is for people that like the idea of drinking stout but don't actually like drinking it.

I'm just guessing here, but: Brooklyn Brewery, Black Chocolate Stout

It's been mentioned a few times already, but yeah, it's not so much the carbs in beer that's bad for you. It's the alcohol. The carbs are actually quite good for you, since they're mostly complex carbs that come from grains (minus a lot of the Belgian-style beers that have sugars for ultra-deliciousness).

Alcohol has 7 cals per gram. By comparison, carbs and proteins have 4 cal/g, and fat has 9 cal/g. This makes alcohol one of the highest calorie things you can ingest. I'm not dissing -- I drink a fair amount myself -- I'm just saying.

Unfortunately, the calories in alcohol are about the least of the problems. As has been touched on, alcohol does affect your metabolism. When you ingest alcohol, your body can do nothing but process the alcohol. This means that any other calories you also ingested must get stored as fat. Further, alcohol affects your testosterone production. For guys, this means more fat around the belly.

But even though I know all of this, I still love a great craft brew. Great Lakes, Goose Island, Unibroue, and so on....it's all so damn good!

2008-01-16 02:52:07 PM
I drink a fair amount (some would say a bit much), typically 3 to 4 a day.

Doing that, over a period of one year I lost 30 points. The key? I exercised an hour a day and otherwise limited (though not eliminated) white carbs (white rice, white bread, etc.)

I now am in pretty damn good shape (I ran a triathlon six months ago), and otherwise enjoy my beer.

From my perspective, you just have to choose: you can't have french fries and beer, you can have one or the other.

Thunderpipes: I am a real drunk, but I try to stay in shape, heavy weightlifter. I try to keep carbs as low as I can, so I drink Miller Light. Oddly, I think it is a pretty good tasting beer.

Same, I used to hate Miller Light but it's really grown on me. Especially with it so cold outside I just leave it on my deck and it gets perfectly chilled. Also, the local mart has 6packs of tallboys for $4.35.

2008-01-16 02:55:43 PM
Yes, and we'll all use the beer to wash down rice cakes and lettuce stalks instead of burgers and wings.

Speakeasy FTW.

PaperStSoviet

I'm not kidding. It's my favorite ultralight beer. I live near the Pa. line so I buy 30 can packs, whenever I have space in my fridge.

2008-01-16 02:56:49 PM
BTW, that wasn't to boast. It's just to contradict the folks who say that you need to only drink lite beer (I drink a good IPA - typically Hop Devil or sometimes Mojo) or skip it entirely to stay in shape.

2008-01-16 02:57:39 PM
This article is not very helpful. It suggests Sam Adams Light over Corona. Did Corona's own light beer not qualify as a good supplement? For what reason? Did it not stack up on taste, or was the caloric content not up to par? Why not mention this?

2008-01-16 02:58:12 PM
Summit EPA is awesome. It's a St. Paul beer, anyone tried it?

2008-01-16 02:58:39 PM
nuclear_asshat: I drink Michelob Ultra and Miller Lite for just those reasons.

Be beer snobs all you want, but when I dropped to single digit bodyfat the amount of ass I could pull was shocking.

I'll drink Fatty McAss Butter Coated Trendy Beer when I'm 70.

I am a fat, harry, raging beer drinker. I still pull down trim non stop. Women don't give a shiat what you look like. It's all in how much of a bad ass you are.

Women aren't attracted to men. (new window)

2008-01-16 03:02:10 PM
TTIUWOP: Who the fark would replace a nice Corona Extra with farking panther-piss, Sam Adams Light? I'd rather drink a farking Natty Light than that shiat!

// Worst. Beer. Article. Ever.
// Oh, and how does bong-water-esque Mich Ultra make the list but not Mich Ultra Amber (which is pretty good for a light beer)?

Corona?!? Hahahahahahahahaahaha!

2008-01-16 03:02:25 PM
Calories aren't everything. A high-alcohol, low-carbohydrate drink (insert liquor of choice here) is going to affect your blood sugar level far less than even a light beer.

If you want to drink and not get fat, drink rum and diet coke, or vodka and soda, whatever. Guinness is low in calories, yes, but it's got a ton of carbohydrates that will jack your blood sugar up something nasty... and if you don't go and work that energy off, it deposits itself in your fat cells.

It's really not that complicated to be honest.

2008-01-16 03:02:49 PM
Alcohol has 7 calories per gram, in addition to lowering your testosterone and slowing your metabolism of food to first metabolize the alcohol itself.

It's a triple threat beverage.

Calories from the beer itself
Calories from the alcohol
Decreased metabolism

2008-01-16 03:06:32 PM
onecanshort: gilgamesh23: I don't want to drink any of their "picks". Including the Guinness Draught. Guinness Extra Stout, however (a pass) is good stuff.

How about not drinking beer if you're so concerned about calories? (Dry) wine or hard liquor mixed with water or soda are good options.

Wine is even worse, too much sugar that the body has a tough time breaking down. Or so my doc says.

That's why he specified dry (low sugar) wine.

2008-01-16 03:07:32 PM
Just drink Belgian crap, because you're already a girlie, then.

2008-01-16 03:09:16 PM
Blech. I refuse to drink "lite" or "low calorie" beer of any type.

If I'm going to drink a beer, I want exactly what I want...no compromises.

2008-01-16 03:10:33 PM
Love all the beer snobs in the group. Y'all remind me of the basement dwellers who pick apart the nudies in Foobies. Give me a break. Like sex, there's "good" and "better" but no "bad".

\Hate beer snobs.
\\Laugh at pompous azzes who squeeze lemon in skunky Corona (sorry for being redundant)

Guinness is weird to me. A couple times it tasted OK but most of the time it's so incredibly bitter that it almost gags me. What am I doing wrong?

2008-01-16 03:17:11 PM
Or, you could just drink, and drink, and drink, and drink.....and drink until you vomit. Beer comes back up along with dinner and lunch.

You've never really hurled till you've hurled on Stout.
You've got to throw up, skim the head, throw up, skim the head...

Shiner Blonde.
Abita Purple Haze
Hazed & Infused

Love 'em all. Miss them terribly.

What a bunch of crap. You can easily drink beer and stay slim. I generally recommend alternating between drinking IPAs and smoking PCP. The IPAs do tend to be a bit calorie rich, but you'll burn a ton of it off running from the police and being tasered.

Lately I've been digging me some Breckenridge Avalanche Amber Ale, finally found a place in the Atl that carries it.
