Is it me, or does this seem way too easy?

2002-10-21 10:08:47 AM
After reading the story, I'm not so sure. People in white vans are allowed to use phones, last I heard. From the Yahoo story it sounds like they just happened upon a white van where a guy was using the phone, not that there was some investigation or trickery that caught him.

what a let down...

2002-10-21 10:09:53 AM
None of the sketches look like this van. This one has windows, though one of the early reports said something about tinted windows. From the CNN shot it looks like the rear left taillight's red plastic had been busted out, but the bulb replaced. Interesting. No "ladder rack" but it has the runners for a ski/luggage rack.

It does seem too easy. Moose is on now.

2002-10-21 10:10:09 AM
Nope. Not too easy. Case closed. Good work everyone.

We can all go about our business as usual. Bad guy has been arrested. Nothing more to see here.

Glad it's all over now.

Lordjupiter: Conspiracy theories are illegal on Mondays.

Cut it out.

2002-10-21 10:10:55 AM
There is no way this is the sniper. The sniper is screwing with the police. Either Moose is out of the loop or he knows that this isn't the sniper.

2002-10-21 10:11:19 AM
Fox News, as vigilant as ever, has posted a story about how the White Van's image is now 'sullied'.

An obvious reference to Monsters, Inc.!

2002-10-21 10:12:37 AM
Damn, I already sold my white Bronco, now I have to sell my white van too? fark it, I'm just going to spray paint it camo.

2002-10-21 10:12:59 AM
White Vans offend me now. Who wants to sign my petition to have them banned?

2002-10-21 10:13:44 AM
For those of you not monitoring two threads, I bet $1 Farkistan money that it's not him.

2002-10-21 10:13:46 AM
His real name is Samuel Clemens

Dear Police,
Im tired of shooten pepul. You sed I cud stop after number five becuz by then the dumb sheep populashun would be scared into letting the guvment and the pigs tighten the leash on everyone by then. ive run out of tarogh cards anyway.

Oh and catch me when you can, Mishter Lusk.

2002-10-21 10:14:11 AM
As much as I hope this guy at the phone booth is the shooter, it would be pretty sad if someone so stupid as to go to a place the police tell him to when wanted for multiple murderes could have evaded them so long.

We should all live in fear of the day that someone of above average intelligence challenges the police.

2002-10-21 10:15:55 AM
Why is Moose still the point on this investigation anyway? I am very suprised that the FBI hasn't snatched this away from him. Of course if the FBI comes in and takes over then Jesse Jackson will be howling racism and demanding payoffs for one of his crack ho girlfriends.

2002-10-21 10:16:06 AM
I thought mondays were created just for conspiracy theories. Makes for a sunny work week!

At any rate, another brief announcement from Moose, this time that they will be "responding to a message" in the near future. If they think they have the guy, why would they need to respond to a message? Maybe not so conspiratorial...

I still hope they got him. Obviously.

2002-10-21 10:16:21 AM
Farmaer bob- its to weed out copy cats and false confessions. If someone confesses to be the shooter, but then cant tell you whats in the letter, then its not him.

Giantrobot: there are as of yet undiscovered tribes deep in the peruvian forrest that knew you were going to say that.

A 'white' van. Looks kinda sullied.

"It's a like a high-tech Mayberry. Things like this aren't supposed to happen here."

Nah - it's only those poor people who're supposed to be killed. fark whoever said that. You respect life of all people or you shut the fark up.

"A source close to the investigation said..."
"The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, would not confirm...but said..."
"A Richmond newspaper is reporting..."
"Montgomery County Police Chief made an appeal..."
"Former FBI profiler Clinton Van Zandt said..."
"Shopper Nancy Elrod said..."
"Police said..."
"Witnesses said..."

Christ, no wonder they haven't caught him yet, everyone and their grandmother are talking to the press about every aspect. Maybe if people would stop "leaking" information to the press and the press would stop pressuring witnesses on the scene the moment something happens they would be closer by now. All you armchair detectives go back to your Law & Order episodes and leave the investigating up to the real police.

2002-10-21 10:57:34 AM
It's nice to see a SWAT team doing something other than executing no-knock warrants against people commitng consentual crimes.

2002-10-21 10:57:46 AM
No, "CSI" is what we should all be watching. They would have figured it out the first week. Or maybe they would have called MacGyver and had him solve the case. Or Scooby Doo.

jus' living in my altered reality...

Zed-

All this reminds me of those "What do You Think?" stories on the Onion.

Nothing is more newsworthy than some mouth breather talking out his ass for the news cameras.

An above FARKer talks about how Zodiac was such a great killer and the sniper's trying to be cool by leaving notes. Umm...the Zodiac left a whole bunch of notes there, guy, and the code was only broken by some high school teacher the police got. Some of it still isn't decoded. In his last note, in fact, he said he left his name. That, of course, hasn't been decoded. However, after the Unabomber was arrested, he made reference to "a string of personal killings no one knows about," and he had a ton of books on the Zodiac and its meanings at his little house in the woods or whatnot. Some theorists point out Theodore J. Kacyinkzski (or whatever) is the number of symbols at the signature line. Weird enough.

ArnoldLayne: Holy fark, that's funny. Sniper Snacks! Priceless. :^)

My roomate thinks that the sniper said something screwy like "call me at 1-800-EAT-SH.T" (or something). Then the cops moved to secure that number and re-route it to police headquarters. Should be interesting to find out the details after all the dust settles.

Numberz...oh of course CSI! Why didn't I say that...I don't even watch Law & Order, but I never miss an episode of CSI. That show rocks!

Okay, I'm confused. Is it asshat sniper or sniper asshat?

Well, Goober, the first phrasing would indicate that this individual was an asshat who became a sniper, whereas the latter would indicate he's a sniper who became an asshat.

ArnoldLayne

that is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. Thanks for making my day. Now I just hope they really have this assh0le in custody so my daughter can enjoy halloween. (yes, community leaders in our area are telling parents to keep kids indoors if he isnt caught by then)

If the sniper really wanted to be a jerk he could tell the police to call 212-479-7990 (the New York rejection line).

2002-10-21 06:37:35 PM
Wait...let's talk about triangulation again...

2002-10-21 07:17:30 PM
Considering the Zodiac had extreme difficult spelling simple words, I tend to believe he just got lucky for the most part.

2002-10-21 07:26:49 PM
ive said it before and ill say it again, i think he is tech support.

2002-10-21 08:34:46 PM
what are you talking about Silkfever?

2002-10-21 11:28:44 PM
The Zodiac Killer similarities to the current sniper case are not 100% airtight, but there is still a lot in common.

Zodiac deliberately made many deliberate misspellings as part of his misinformation campaign.

Tarot cards? Bah. Take a look at one of Zodiac's letters. Better yet, one of his cryptograms. The solution for the first set of cryptograms made everyone realize they were dealing with a perp who was much smarter - and worse, much more cunning - than he chose to appear in everyday life.

After plugging innocent folks from concealment, could Mr. Asshat Sniper be thinking of something, ummmm, a lot more more close-up and protracted?

Zodiac's most infamous moment was the Lake Berryessa, CA. attack on an isolated pair of college students shortly before sundown. He broke with his previous tactics for just this one attack. Instead of coming out of nowhere and spraying the victims with lead at close range, he decided to play with them first. You should see a police sketch of the mask he wore for that adventure. Nothing like terrorizing your helpless 20-something victims as you rope 'em up and get the knife ready. Seriously evil shiat.

The #1 Zodiac Killer suspect, Arthur Lee Allen, died in 1992. It's pretty damn unlikely that Mr. Asshat Sniper is the Zodiac. Back then, local police did really fsck up from square one, but we now know it's nearly certain Allen was Zodiac. If there's one atom of justice in the cosmos, Arthur Lee Allen is writhing in eternal torment. I'd be pleased to have him move over and make room for the current dumbass sociopath in the D.C. area.

They absolutely do not come any scarier and cleverer than Zodiac.

Time to shut up now.

Droshki- i was just saying my thoery on who the sniper is, i think he is probably a tech support person gone crazy.
becuase i work tech support, im on the verge of going crazy myself.
i bet if they ran a check on the customer either, internet service or computer, or software, they all have the same one, and have all called tech support within that last month..... just wait and see.... im telling ya, thats the answer.
or it could be the effects of me working ten hours a day, dealing with idoits all day long , but eh, close enough.
=)
P.s. my brain is fried today, if that made no sense , i apologize.
