Once upon a midnight dreary?

2008-01-15 02:31:03 PM
The Poe Toaster is almost enough to have me considering making the drive to B-More on a Friday night.

2008-01-15 02:38:20 PM
Given the general themes of his poetry, wouldn't it be apropos to celebrate his deathday rather than his birthday?

2008-01-15 02:41:33 PM
Speaking of cemeteries, I went to Greenmount cemetery recently - it was truly awesome. The most beautiful sculptures I've ever seen, a really moving experience.

Anyway see you Friday night.

2008-01-15 07:16:11 PM
i've been to one of those before...NEVERMORE!

I can't wait for the headlines out of this one..

"Herd of drunk website members attack Poe toaster with empty beer bottles. 40 arrested. Your dog wants steak"

2008-01-15 08:02:05 PM
That should make for some awesome pictures.

I'd be there, but I'm drinking with Lester and Bunk that night.

Might want to skip the "drunken midnight trip to Edgar Allen Poe's house" portion of the party.

For those that don't get that, let me detail this likely very common event by his ancestral home: a car pulls up filled with probably white high school or college students, they take one look at the neighborhood, and keep on driving...

Why do I get the feeling one of you idiots is going to flying tackle the Poe toaster and ruin it for everybody?

2008-01-16 12:18:19 PM
Isn't it "poetaster"?

/or is it just that I'm not in on the joke?
//yeah, I figured.

From Wikipedia:

In 2007, 55 to 60 people showed up for the Toaster's visit, making it the largest turnout recorded. In a radio interview, Jeff Jerome of the Poe House and Museum said that he was very pleased at the turnout and how they handled themselves compared to the previous year. He also stated that this is an internationally recognized tradition as people from Japan have come to visit for the annual visit from the Toaster.

I have a reservation in my name (check my profile, if you care) at Maggie Moore's at 10:00. It's about a block and a half from the cemetery.

They do admit those under 21.

They say that the parking meters are free after 8:00 P.M.

2008-01-16 12:33:12 PM
Dammit, I'd love to go. Too far away though.

Poe is my favorite author these days. Some of his writing is unbelievably good... The Assignation, The Raven (of course), The Murders in the Rue Morgue (better than most Holmes stories although I like those quite a lot as well), Bon-Bon... others I'm forgetting.

2008-01-16 12:34:31 PM
Actually, I'd suggest that the fark contingent try to protect the toaster (if necessary). You guys who do make it should provide security, preventing any dumbasses from trying to interfere with the toast.

I'm in. I'll be on the next light rail down after leaving the Sci-Fi show at the BSO, which ends around 10 (George Takei for the win).

Now who should we be looking for in the bar? A sign bearing a Fark cliche, 20-something prematurely balding farkers, skinny nerds, or some combination thereof?

PurplePimpSaber: Given the general themes of his poetry, wouldn't it be apropos to celebrate his deathday rather than his birthday?

Not my call. Take that up with the Poe Toaster.

You know that John Wilkes Booth is buried there?

Spindle: Might want to skip the "drunken midnight trip to Edgar Allen Poe's house" portion of the party.

We're not going anywhere near his house, which is about a mile away.

Nestea Plunge: Why do I get the feeling one of you idiots is going to flying tackle the Poe toaster and ruin it for everybody?

Actually, I think everybody is afraid of that. I expect that if it did happen, the other 50 people there would insure that they met with some distraction and accidentally released the Toaster.

In 2006 the Toaster looked like he was 90 years old and was not moving very fast. Anyone could have stopped him, but they all just stood quietly and watched. The guy last year was younger and much faster.

Creepy Lurker Guy: LGT = "Link goes to"

Thank you Creepy Lurker Guy. One of my 2008 resolutions was to become an all-knowing anacronym loving Farker. You have kept me on the wagon. Thanks!

It would probably have made more sense if I were anywhere near Baltimore, which I am not.

And who knew "cooping" was a thing? Interesting.

2008-01-16 06:02:35 PM
you mean the FAKE Poe toaster?

2008-01-16 06:15:27 PM
FYI the Poe toaster comes in the early hours not at midnight... like at 5AM. And he comes on Poe's Birthday. Which is the 19th. It used to be an old man that came to this grave, but more recently it's been a guy that is in his like late 20's that fakes a limp.

Be respectful if you do go, don't talk to the man. It is a tradition.

For the chronologically challenged, one minute after midnight on the night of January 18th is the morning of January 19th. We know. Some of us have seen the guy before. I have (new window), and Creepy Lurker Guy has. But thank you.

SO, what name am I asking for at the pub? Because I'd rather not get there and make an idiot of myself by asking for the nerd party. EIP if you want to be discreet about it or something.

Well, I have no problem asking like that, but that's assuming that the staff will have any idea what I'm talking about and I assume that they won't unless you plan to show up dressed like the Tron guy.

/don't do that.
//srsly.

Well, I was going to go, but changed my mind after driving about 1/5 of the distance. But no one will read this, so there.
