Jordan told The Associated Press on Thursday he believes many officers and enlisted soldiers did not face adequate scrutiny in the investigation that led to convictions against 11 soldiers, none with a rank higher than staff sergeant.

Maybe the investigation wasn't as thorough as it should have been, but the headline's just a tad misleading...

unbefarkinglievable.

Is this all it takes now? "oh, a couple of years have passed, the people no longer worry about it, so go on with your lives guys, nothing happened."

They would.

Well, if someone like her doesn't take the fall people may look higher in the chain of command.

you forgot to embolden "none with a rank higher than staff sergeant."

Because, you know, higher ranking officials would NEVER have let this happen, right?

What a shame.

Not unexpected. If we can't hold our own accountable, what gives us the right to stand in judgment over others?

Gotta love the level of Accountability shown by the Government and its High government officials under the Leadership of President Bush.

Only good thing I've seen him do so far was the creation of Laws that gave serious prison time for thoe CEO white collar corporate crimes.

That's a shame now people are just going to be all the more pissed at the US military/administration. Even apportioning just a tiny fraction of the blame would have resulted in at least some good will.

/Bah how depressing!

Who wants to bet Lynndie is mentioned at the next Congressional debate about whether women should serve in compact positions?

Congressman Smoot: "If women so volunteer, they should be able to take any position in the military they are qualified for.

Congressman Cooby: But what if they are raped!

Newt Gingrich: What if they rape the enemy, like Lynndie!Women cannot be trusted, especially with their periods.

An alternate History:

After the defeat of the allies in WW2, Hermann Goering was given an awesome parade, There was a celebration of the "closing of the camps" because the war was over and the "solution" resolved. All that nonsense about "harsh" treatment at the camps was finally laid to rest. 4 soldiers were given 3 years each, and Himmler was retired (he later became minister of culture in his "comeback.")

Hitler commented: "These were rough times, and our soldiers did their duty. I have respect for every one of them. To ask questions about the camps is unpatriotic, and besides, it stains Germany's honor, so, let's just not talk about it."

2008-01-11 10:40:41 AM
That gives the US time now to deal with programs of torture in the other Iraqi prisons and camps. You know, all those programs ordered by Donald Rumsfeld. After "successes" at Gitmo.

Doesn't that escalation make Donald Rumsfeld a war criminal?

If 11 soldiers were torturing people without the knowledge of their officers that itself is a crime that should be punished. There should have been, at least, a couple of Lt's, and a Captain who got their careers ruined publicly as a result of this. The fact that this didn't happen says a lot about how serious the Military was in getting to the bottom of this matter.

Oh utterly, but the problem is once you've been caught it's much better to own up and face the consequences then play the 'yea well what are you going to do about it?' card. At least it is if you care about international reputation and any claim to a moral high ground.

/Proud to know jackshiat about interrogation techniques and I hope you loved reading my opinion.

Demoralization and Dehumanization are two different things. No one, NO ONE, should ever be dehumanized. There is NEVER a need for it in war and politics.

If only our country had the brains to stop the illegal detainments. Let the little farkers out of the not so classy beach resort already especially those that come from piss ass poor countries!

I'm really surprised they didn't just feed the low guys on the totem pole to the wolves. It seems like they're so unconcerned about the whole issue they're just going to let it go. At least in the good old days you needed a scapegoat to stop the questioning. Now you can just say "Fark you, John Q. Public" and be on with it.

Indicative of typical ignorance of the culture. You don't FORCE middle eastern gentlemen to give oral sex to each other.

You're right, but the headline implied that no one faced any consequences. Yes, there should be more consequences for the higher-ups, but that doesn't mean everyone walked away.

And by "dropping all charges against everyone involved" you mean sending 8 of them to prison, including several doing 8-10 year sentences in federal prison. Right subby?
