Jesus! How many of these things can we have in one week?

Considering someone died, am I a jerk for wondering where the Florida tag is?

as long as we have stupid drivers and fog. There is no limit.

great, now how am i supposed to get to Kissimmee StCloud for my romantic getaway?

It's not a chain reaction. It's speeding, tail-gating and reckless driving.

Bungholes.

2008-01-09 08:41:29 AM
I was more than likely started by some old couple trying to get to the nearest Bennigan's.

Officials say a combination of fog and smoke from a controlled burn near Old Grade Road led several vehicles to crash early Wednesday morning. The Florida Highway Patrol says visibility is down to zero in the area.

Good thing it was a controlled burn. Now they just have to figure out how to control the smoke.

Back when I was a firefighter, we had a huge chain-reaction crash on a foggy day on Interstate 81 in PA. While we were working on extricating people from the initial crash(es), we were hearing impacts 1/4-1/2 mile BEHIND us as cars still slammed into the back of the stopped vehicles, despite flares, police cars, etc. We ended up with more than 100 vehicles involved, but thankfully no fatalities. The Medevac chopper pilots, as always, were the shiat -- how those things get in the air with the massive iron balls those guys are carrying I have no idea.

As wowzer97pooh just stated, it's morons who think "65mph speed limit" applies to all sitations and conditions.

This will be the last time they hold the farmer's market in the median of the I-4.

worst controlled burn evar.

2008-01-09 08:46:30 AM
As a transplant to Florida from Michigan, I will attest that most of the fault here falls directly into the laps of the assholes that try to do 90 mph in fog or rain & the people that are so afraid of driving that they slow down to 40 mph in those same conditions.

/Major thing I hate about the south: the drivers here are idiots.

2008-01-09 08:47:00 AM
Out where I live we get haboobs--huge dust storms that blow up and cut visibility to zero. People insist on driving on the freeways in these storms.

It used to be in the rural areas you were told to pull over to the side of the road and wait it out. Now people are told to pull over and turn off their lights as people would see tail-lights and plow into the back of parked cars at full speed.

I actually really like that Carrie Underwood song, 'Jesus Take the Wheel'. Not a big country fan, and not religious at all, but I do like that one.

It's probably got a little to do with the fact that she is smoking hot. But still.

I want to apologize for the comments I made in the other fog pileup thread. I said this never seems to happen where I live even though we have tons of fog/smoke conditions (usually in the summer when things are a-burning). Apparently there are plenty of dipsh*ts where I live too.

This is about 15 mins from my house.

Kinda hard to speed with a bunch of blue hairs doing 40 in every lane.

I saw this fog on the news this morning. Visibility is practically zero. That road is between Tampa and Orlando, busy, undersized, constantly under construction and a horrible drive when conditions are good.

Who's decision was it to do a controlled burn on an intensely foggy day???

obviously you have never driven on I-4...people drive like absolute idiots no matter what the weather conditions are...blue hairs are not the biggest problem on that interstate...

Didn't they make a movie about a bad multi car pile-up? I'm thinking from the '70s, as that's when all the disaster movies came out.

2008-01-09 08:59:14 AM
Considering someone died, am I a jerk for wondering where the Florida tag is?

Yes, you are. Like Florida's the only state that has pile ups. I'd almost guarantee half the cars in the accident were driven by people from other states.

2008-01-09 08:59:37 AM
subby, when an event happens in Florida the Florida tag overrules all other tags. Thank you.

They finally finished the 3 year widening project, it's 6 lanes all the way from Disney to I-75 now. One small, short construction zone west of Lakeland where they are adding a new exit but it doesn't block any lanes. It's a very smooth and easy drive under most conditions.

Zafler: As a transplant to Florida from Michigan

The fault lies exactly in the combination of incompatible Michigan and Florida drivers. Separately, they each drive like assholes. Combined, they are deadly assholes.

Chopper has to refuel, so video is coming down for a bit.

The worst drivers in Florida are the tourists and NY transplants.

I used to commute daily from Lakeland to Winter Park back in the 90's. I coulda used those extra lanes.

97.3% of all traffic accidents are caused by Michigan drivers.

I've just come back from visiting Florida for a holiday (I live in London) and let me just say, wtf is up with all the tailgating! I was on I-75 and people were doing 70-80mph about 4 feet from each other. It seemed to just be the way people drive out there. Madness.

2008-01-09 09:06:55 AM
duckpoopy

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one...tourists may drive bad and the NJ/NY transplants like to drive fast (god love 'em), but Floridians are notoriously aggressive, stupid, irresponsible and dangerous drivers. Just moved out of the state and my car insurance went from $1000/yr to $400/yr...that's gotta say something about the driving population.

I actually have driven it a couple times this year. It was back in May when you guys have those stupid ass love bugs. It was a rental so I didn't give a crap. I'm willing to bet that this road is completely different during rush hour and during the middle of the day. I drove it in the middle of the day and couldn't make any time because of all the old people going to slow. I'd bet that during rush hour everyone goes 90 because it's mostly all the young poeple driving. I do have to say that it seemed to me that once you get close to Tampa the speed picks up but anywhere near Orlando the passing lane was always blocked by some old farts.

2008-01-09 09:09:24 AM
Someone should tell the chopper pilot he is "live" and on the air. I can listen to him tells some other pilot how to game the system and make 3 time his normal salary by flying later on in the day.

Yikes.

Kill 'em all.

Florida has beautiful beaches, plenty of fun stuff to do and generally nice weather. Aside from that, it has the worst farking drivers in the country. It's a mix of decrepit old farts and delirious snowbirds who have been behind the wheel for 24 hours straight. Dangerous.

I agree. I lost count of how many Michigan tagged vehicles I saw clogging up the left hand lane when I drove down to Naples last week. SLOWER TRAFFIC STAY RIGHT.
