I swear I saw on AFV a bride and groom catch fire when the silly string caught fire on a candle.

/maybe it was Real TV

I consider my self an escapee of that God forsaken Island. My family isn't so lucky.

Guidos, Gangsters, and Yuppies on a small Island of over inflated housing prices. Ugh.

I should have added, "Billy Joel working on his latest opus."

*sigh*

I saw a clip of a little kid ready to blow out the candles on his birthday cake when another kid sprayed the silly string at him and burned his face. I don't remember what show it was on, but it certainly would not have made the cut on AFV.

Silly string smells like bad breath+plastic+confined space. It should be called ridiculous string, because it's ridiculous. /drunk

All I know is that my cats go bananas when I spray Silly String in the room. Then again, I have a cat who huffs Formula 409 if I let her, so who even knows what that means.

/when you outlaw silly string, only outlaws will have silly string
//can't wait for outlaw silly string headlines

I initially thought this might have been BS, but google revealed many discussions about silly string baking into a tar-like substance that's virtually impossible to remove from auto paint. Keep it clear from your car. If hit with it, wipe it off while it's still soft.

Why didn't the cheap fire men get the clear coat option?

2008-01-09 02:49:10 AM
Silly string does ruin paint, if you remove it most likely it eats the clear coat off and leaves a duller color where the shiat was

Thanks for the information.

ok, so the article isn't as bad as the headline made it sound. i can see them banning the stuff at parades when it's going to muck up the paint job on the rigs.

They don't want people detecting the mines. The string lays across the trip wire without putting weight on it.

Confetti has been banned in Detroit for over 50 years.

Which is arguably ironic, as for at least the last 40 no one has had any reason to deploy any there.

I understand troops in Iraqistan use silly string to check for booby-trap trip wires when entering unsecured buildings.

Unfortunately, no one used silly string in Florida in 2000 or Ohio in 2004, looking for booby-trap boobs.

I live in Huntington, NY, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

Comment #2 on TFA:

All right gang, here's what we do. We all meet at DiRaimo's Pizzeria on Wall St around midnight. Then we go next door to the firehouse and cover it with silly string. Then it's back to DiRaimo's for beer and pizza!

Flash mob!

It is a nice town, Chesterfields is good, as is the Indian Native American shop south of 25A.

Each halloween, if the weather is good, I get on my motorcycle and hand out toilet paper and silly string to groups of wandering teenagers.

And I'll do it again.

But Silly string is fighting the war on terror!

Why does Long Island hate freedom?!

It's the same in New Orleans. I was nearly arrested by a cop when somebody handed me a can of silly string at a parade. I didn't shoot it, I didn't keep it, but because it was in my hand for 1 second I was grabbed by the throat and dragged from the street to the curb and frisked and interrogated. Fortunately, three of my friends walked up at that very moment to witness the harrassment...an architectural engineer, a defense attorney, and a New Orleans District Attorney.

Needless to say, she didn't arrest me. I considered pressing charges, but we found other ways of interfering in the police officer's life over the next six months instead.

Ah the 90s. A fun decade!

How about banning the guidos first?

Seeing as how I lived in New Orleans through most of the 90s and went to untold numbers of parades, I kind of doubt your story about being "grabbed by the throat". The cops in NOLA were incredibly tolerant of all sorts of asshattery at parades, so unless you did more than you're letting on, like shoot the cops with the silly string or resist arrest in some nontrivial way, they probably just took your can away and gave you a warning.

Having said that, when I was going to college in Mobile, AL, in 1989-1992, they passed a ban on silly string there as well, for the same reason. It's impossible to clean up and causes actual damage to vehicles.

Firetrucks spend hours parked near burning buildings with debris and ashes falling on and around them, they are utility vehicles, not show cars.

Yet they can't stand up to a little silly string...

Couldn't they just ban firemen from the fairs and street parades instead? They shouldn't be wasting all the gas it takes to run one of those fire trucks on something as frivolous as a parade, get your priorities straight.

Buying and using silly string is good for the economy, driving a city fire truck around town for no good reason, just wastes taxpayer money

Not all are. In fact many aren't. They just wear uniforms so they are more noticeable.
