Subby fails at basic reading comp.

The N. Irish forces are purchasing a few tasers, because the Garda (that's the Catholics on the rest of Ireland,) already have them.

Religion has nothing to do with it. The PSNI is in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland is policed by An Garda Siochana. The Guarda to have Tasers available. Their acquisition was in part influenced by the death of John Carthy.

are you forgetting the 1913 uprising?

Its a nationalist/religous embroglio, original comment stands.

Jameson = Catholic ; Bushmills = Protestant

Sure its a generalization, but to deny the clear link between fervent religious belief and ardent nationalism in this conflict is intellectually dishonest.

Not Irish per se, but whatever. Don't these guys lack guns as it is? What's the point of the taser? Foreign youtube action?

From The Article -

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) meanwhile has claimed Tasers could potentially violate Articles 2 and 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights concerning inhumane treatment and the right to life.

Holy Crap! Makes tasers sound very dangerous. But in reality the alternative is (meant to be) guns. So I vote YES on tasers.

Bro, tase me.

Moreso, I expect, than the average yob.

If they copy our Barney Fifes, they'll be using tasers in lieu of a tap on the shoulder to get attention. That might perhaps be the concern. Ya think?

If you're referring to the Easter uprising, it was in 1916. April 24-30th to be exact.

I'm one who considers himself relatively uncultured in world politics, but even I know that everything in Ireland, be it peaceful or otherwise, is motived by religion. The segregation there is as hateful and probably more ignorant than the south with slaves.

I actually worked in a volunteer program with an older gentleman from Ireland (came to the US to volunteer at age 50) who says people are still tortured and murdered because of their religion, and that the IRA is still as dominant as ever no matter what the press says. He lost family members in bombings as recently as two or three years ago.. Religion is the lifeblood of northern and southern Ireland.

OK thanks, I guess being from there and working most of the year there I missed all that. You are completely right everyone in Ireland is R.C and everyone in NI is COI.

What bombing 2 or 3 years ago? You have no clue what you are talikng about.

There is no 'southern Ireland' they are two fecking different countries.

feckingmorons while i only lived there for about four months, i'm gonna have to agree with you there.

the only time i ever felt tension was in northern ireland. people in the republic didn't seem to care at all.

Some of the older people are still set in their ways, but I don't really worry about the 80 year old guys blowin up the trashcans.

So Dirmaud goes to Confession and tells the priest that he set fire to two train cars on the Norther Irish Rail.

The priest thinks for an moment, and says ... "Well Dirmaud my boy, that is a terrible sin indeed. For your pennance go and do the Stations.

It's the North of Ireland (British territory) so as a couple of posters have already pointed out they would probably consider themselves British, and would most definitely not speak Irish (yes, that's right, the language is Irish *not* gaelic).

Still a nice headline though.

/didn't realise the Gardai already had tasers.

2008-01-06 06:54:19 AM
First, they stripped every person of their guns. Now, they want to taser "disobedient citizens" aka citizens who expresses disagreement with the government. This will not end well for the Irish.

In fairness they probably have one set gathering dust in a box in Templemore after some court recommendation. The Gards have a lot of crap (like spikes for cars) they don't get around to using.

2008-01-06 07:28:36 AM
The Gards don't need tasers they've still got this guy.

Ach ina dhiaidh sin, is iomaí nair Deutsche/Dutch/German i mBearla...teanga falsa...

/didn't realise the Gardai already had tasers.

They only started a few months ago. I don't think your average Garda has them, just their emergency response guys. I think they want to avoid the "mental fella in Longford executed by Gardaí" sort of thing.

The alternative to a taser is not a gun. If you bring a taser to a gun fight, you're going to get shot.

The alternative to a taser is common sense.

No wonder so many cops use tasers instead.

necro_steve: Still waiting for that taser tag...

That would be AWESOME!!!!

I can see it now... TAZER TAG outlets in every suburban strip mall. The gift shop would sell fresh souvenir underwear imprinted with "I pissed myself at Bob's Tazer Tag". A big screen tv would show the current matches at the bar next door. This could be bigger than Monday Night Football!

BOOM!

I hope they have a scoop and a mop in their police cars.

They never stripped me of my gun. It is still in my house in Cork City. It is an old shotgun.
