PinkyPinkerton: And I really, really hope this stirs up some interest re: the ridiculous, uninformed (i.e. ignorant) attitude towards and resources for the mentally ill in our country. A lot of people are hurting BAD in this country. Painwise, it's like walking around with a broken femur, and most poor schmucks don't know enough or have the resources to do much about it.

This!

There is currently not enough being done for the mentally ill in this country.

EricTheHalfABee: okiemule:"Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention." Yup, arthritis is all in your head, Grandpa.

I agree with the other stuff you said, but wanted to point out that any chronic medical condition has serious psychological ramifications, including rheumatoid arthritis. Your state of mind has considerable impact on the actual physical symptoms that your body feels. Only when a person realizes that control and maintenance requires both mind and body treatment do they really start to conquer these diseases. It's really easy for a person to think that "hell, i'm not crazy, why should i see a shrink for my RA?" but they don't realize it's not about being crazy, it's about your mind and body being irrevocably tied.

/Not meaning to sound all "holistic," but sometimes, especially with chronic disease, it's essential.
//returns to sniffing incense and performing yoga
///not really

As a possessor of a lovely chronic disease (diabetes, in my case), I agree. Mental attitude is everything. You won't get far without the physical/medication treatments, but all the medicine in the world won't help if your heart's not in it.

In this case, though, I was following the time-honored tradition of taking things out of context and not researching completely. Oh, and trusting Wikipedia. My bad. :D

Seriously...we have that old buck-up/stop whining/hard-work-cures-all attitude in this country...I suspect partially from the Puritan and hardscrabble immigrant influence through the century...and the religion. "Give it to God!" Bullshiat. The mentally ill person in my family cried out for help time and time again. Was told they needed to go into the Army to learn discipline. Or to put "God first, Others second, Yourself third". Seriously...that was the response. And all the rest of us could do was sort of watch in horror until this poor person got so bad that there were just no other options than emergency mental help.

That did not have to happen. They did not have to suffer needlessly like they did. They begged for help.

I'm not knockin' the fam...just saying that ignorance is ALIVE AND WELL in this country re: mental illness. And a ton of the posts on this very thread prove that point.

I must have briefly forgotten what website I was on, lol.

I should have figured as much, but as much as I hate that tool, Dr. Phil, I had to give credit where credit is due. Though I actually never read his thesis, so maybe it is full of shiat. Though, I might imagine that paper could have been written back before he sold his soul to the devil [Oprah].

So are you saying I shouldn't trust Wikipedia?

Guntram Shatterhand: Owangotang: I'm picturing a flimsy show around Wednesday, based on clips of file footage of Britney, Dr. Phil's own telling of his meeting with her, and SPECIAL GUEST: Britney's former hubby Jason Alexander!

Add some barnyard analogies and you'd be right.

Plus it'll be a new downward spiral to Brit's career right there. Even when she farked up, she didn't fark up enough for the media to downgrade her as a 'former popular singer.' Now that's she's on Dr. Phil, she's officially gone. Branson will be her new place to fark up and die.

Sad thing is I don't think even Branson would have her.

///And Linkification makes it better still.

Keep in mind this is News of the World we're talking about. British tabloids make the National Enquirer look like The New York Times.

Regardless of the source, there's little doubt Britney is a broken soul. My prescription? Get the f--k out of LA. Let Cletus keep the kids for a while-- get your head together. Go to your hometown of Kentwood and try to remember what it was like to live in small town Louisiana. Stay out of New Orleans unless you want to help Bragelina rebuild the 9th Ward. Rest. Stay off the drugs and vodka. Buy an old upright piano and learn to play the damn thing-- You've had enough hard living you can probably write a decent song now. Find a credible psychoanalyst and work through things. Avoid men....

Wait a minute... even if the dumb chick were to read this she wouldn't give anything I've said a second thought. Life expectancy: April.

2008-01-06 03:05:38 AM
its_toasted: Sounds like BPD, but I'm not trained as a psychologist / psychiatrist.

What's more scary is that she convinced an ER psych that she was OK to release. 72 hour holds aren't cast in concrete.

[snip...you can look up the CA Mental Health site]I wonder what was going through the ER psych's mind?

As a former patient advocate, I can tell you: the Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act, a really dreadful piece of legislation that regulates how psychiatric patients can be involuntarily held, requires any one of three things: that the patient be
1. A danger to him/herself (i.e. actively suicidal with a clear and stated plan to kill him/herself in the next 24 hours), or,
2. A danger to another person (i.e., actively homicidal with a clearly stated plan to kill another person immediately upon release), or,
3. gravely disabled, (i.e., unable to provide for basic necessities, such as food, clothing or shelter, upon release).

So, if Britney was able to say convincingly enough that, no, she wasn't going to hurt herself, no, she didn't want to hurt anyone else, and yes, she had a place to go when she left the hospital (like there was any doubt about that), it's pretty cut & dried. They had no legal grounds to keep her in the hospital.

2008-01-06 03:08:48 AM
Mad Mark: Sad thing is I don't think even Branson would have her.

They'd put Jesus into her heart and make her a righteously pious Christian with enough scorn fueled by bitterness to make her into the perfect representation of how they think America should be. Then she'll start speaking out and be another hollowheaded has-been like Chuck Norris and start doing PAX shows where she'll preach the Reagan talking points until people start calling her on her shiat, then she'll go back to drinking and drugging it up and go on a rollercoaster of Jesus & the Drugs until she finally kills herself at 47 at a record 480 pounds.

If she lives, someone is going to get their hooks into her. Her only means of defiance is self-destruction and she's going out one way or another.

2008-01-06 03:22:31 AM
Look, when Natalie Cole when off the deep end with cocaine, her mother had her declared incompetent and took over the bank account until she got well. Of course, Natalie Cole's mother loves her, and stepped away from the checkbook when she was well.

Why has none of those $500 and hour (and up) lawyers petitioned to have her declare incompetent?? Because her parents won't and Cletus doesn't have standing?

I predict a California Britney Spears Involuntary Commitment Law with teeth after she dies. Because she will. Lock her up. For her own protection and the protection of any poor soul on the California freeways. LOCK HER UP. AGAIN.

2008-01-06 06:29:24 AM
Dr Phil was involved? Britney may as well kill herself if she's reduced to seeking the advice of celebrity quacks.

2008-01-06 06:43:03 AM
GimpyNip: I lived in Hollywood from 2000 to 2005 and it isn't like their are paps everywhere. Celebrities intentionally go to locations where they are. If poor Brit wanted peace she would move some place far far away, like, say Burbank!

This is true, anyone who has lived in L.A. can tell you this. The only "exception" to the rule is when they show up at some joint and the guys show up outside the establishment waiting for an exit shot.

Yeah I tend to agree, but then again I also realize that when it comes to bi-polar disorder there is no justice in the world. After all, Iris Chang blows her head off on the side of the road and Britney can't even manage to choke on a Frito or something.

Someone explain to me how that's right?

/Seems like a fine argument against the existence of God as well.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: You would think that she would be easy to track. She would *have* to leave a trail of bright orange Cheetos dust on the ground.

It would be like one of those Family Circus cartoons where the kids wander all over town and we see the dashed lines that show where they've been... except with her, there would be more of a fluorescent orange hue.

Those were always my favorite ones to read. I used to follow the dashes to watch exactly where they went - over a fence, under a table..

On another note, this is a prime example of someone in a divorce / child custody proceeding who is listening to their lawyer's advice and one who isn't.

I guarentee you that K-Fed is living straight out of his attorney's rulebook. Have you seen him on the news? No. Seen him out partying? No. Seen him doing anything that the press might find newsworthy? Nope.

Britney, on the other hand, has seemingly ignored all the advice she has been given by anyone regarding her kids. I bet 10 - 1 odds that her attorney(s) have sat her down and told her to live straight and stay out of the limelight if she wants her kids. Obviously she hasn't done this.

So, by listening to his atty., K-Fed has the kids. All you Farkers out there in divorce / custody battle land, heed this cautionary tale.

The only thing different from Brit and anyone else on the planet who's ever had a meltdown, is that hers is televised. It's no better or worse, it's just not private. I feel for the poor girl. The media storm is only spinning her hopelessness deeper. She definitely needs help, who could pull themselves out of THIS by themselves? There's 12 steps out of Hell. I hope she finds them.

Guntram Shatterhand: rynthetyn: This. Family friend who's bipolar spent a longer time than that voluntarily checked into the hospital to get his medicine straightened out, and that without any major episodes that led to the decision. That somebody who had such a major meltdown got out in a day and a half is practically criminal.

I'm sure the hospital has better things to do than deal with some Big Important Person being the very pinnacle of a big old whiny baby while there are other people there seeking help. And since she's getting in deep with Dr. Phil (of all people!), she deserves whatever she gets. And since the kids are out of her hands forever, she can go back to self-destructing in peace.

Oh come on, she's in CEDARS SINAI hospital in Hollywood/LA. That's the private hospital for the Rich and Famous. I have been in it in my professional capacity before. They have a couple of floors where each suite has it's own kitchen so they can bring their own chefs! They have plenty of time to cater to the whiney, that's why they charge what they charge - no medicare cases in that hospital baby, the lobby smells like fresh-printed $100 bills stacked floor to ceiling.

From what I've read she has the attitude that no one can make her do what she doesn't want to do. Court appearance...I don't want to go so I'll say I'm sick, etc. She may indeed be psychotic, but she also very immature & childish as well.
