mrtursiops: American Gladiators is completely straight compared to those ultimate fighting shows. Every time I dial past them it's always 2 guys humping each other in the missionary position.

It's only ghey if you make eye contact

Is it just me, or doesn't Wolf look like they went back to the 80s and kidnapped James Hetfield, and then fed him a steady diet of protein shakes and powerlifting?

Either that or the cowardly lion has a human cousin.

Manticore1023: Bloody William: Christ, it's farking hard to please some people.

No, this isn't Masterpiece theater. It's not Firefly. It's not Heroes. It's not Futurama. It's not Family Guy. It's pretty intellectually devoid and I completely admit it.

It's also beefy freaks hitting each other with foam mallets for our goddamn amusement. I'm stoked about it. Sometimes brainless TV is just dandy.

seriously. it's like people bagging on Godzilla movies for having shiatty acting. Hello, it's Godzilla, people! just shut up and watch the rubber-suit monster trash the city.

the same rant applies here.

A-farking-men. Get off your intellectual high horses for five seconds and enjoy carousing with the simpleton rabble, I promise it won't hurt. It's what I'm doing.

OptimistPrime: That...Titan one! Dear God, he can't be real. Nobody real looks that much like Ozymandias from Watchmen.

Yeah, the dude's real. His name is Mike O'Hearn. He graduated from the same High School as me a couple grades ahead. He was one big mofo even back then (mid 80's). He claims he's never used steroids but I find that hard to believe. If you had seen him back then you'd say the same thing. A teenager in High School looking like friggin' Arnold Schwarzenegger, yeah right *rolls eyes*.

Last I heard he had won a few Mr. Universe titles and was living in Venice Beach, Ca. (big surprise there, LOL)

The old AG format was still chock-ablock with stupid, though. Most of the events blew (though I rather liked Atlasphere and, of course, Assault) and the "scoring" made very little difference in the end, as the Eliminator (by far the best part of the show) tended to have wide sways of "ability to do" between the contenders.

This is why Ninja Warrior (Sasuke) is so much better. It's basically ALL "Eliminator," involves a lot more people, and--in the end--makes you TRULY impressed by one's athletic abilties.

Of course it's truly "Man vs. Environment" rather than having people butt heads directly, so... That and the "only a few people have won despite 19 competitions" makes the show decidedly not contoured to an American audience.

Ahhh yes, purple, I made a 15 minute conversation to a friend of mine on the wonders of his permed mullet and fireman's mustache.
Good times

Ninja Warrior is the farking own. Some of the biggest badasses on the planet and yet they are all very cool to one another. It is awesome to see athletes pushing their skills to their limits without having to generate a dickhead culture in the process. Not to mention that the course stomps nearly everyone who tries to conquer it, making a win into something that is actually significant.

/Yay, we won!!!
//Shut up. You didn't win crap by sitting on your couch yelling at the screen.
///Most of those players aren't from your town and don't even like it very much; they sure as hell aren't "your team."

I remember some of the gladiator chicks being pretty hot the first time around, most of them look bigger then me in this incarnation..that's just not right. (6'1-200, scared by large women...or was that just really turned off/freaked out?) Sure, it's not PC..but ick.

ClockworkOrangeDroog

I fail to see the connection between a discussion of the merits of American Gladiators, and a man who committed suicide on live television that prompted a discussion of broadcast journalism ethics.

It's as though you were trying to compare the zany aspects of Survivor with photographs of Rwandan refugees being murdered. Both took place in a jungle. That's about it.

Dated a few bodybuilding gals, I gotta say they had the capacity to be really feminine.
It wasn't intimidating at all.

There are some ladies who would appear masculine without the muscles.
And that's just creepy
