The Massachusetts legislature is filled with idiots - - Bay State residents go to Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods in CT or Twin River in RI and dump their cash there.

But of course the legislators get campaign cash *from* the out-of-state casinos so don't expect any sudden attacks of common sense in Massachusetts any time soon.

2008-01-03 09:43:59 AM
This is stupid but somewhat similar to how budgets work no matter where they are but may be the only way to get this thru.

If I have a budget of $100 and only spend $75 this year, next years budget will likely only be $75.

I'm in Mass and no one here has common sense, its a class that's given in all Mass schools very early on.

It's Ironic that the first settlers in Massachusetts came seeking religious freedom and freedom from overtaxation. Now Massachusetts is a stronghold of socialism, secular humanism, corruption and general asshattery.

Secular Humanism is one of those Us v Them terms made up by Bill O'Reilly. It pretty much means anyone who disagrees with Bill and his views. It's actually a very convenient word, since you can instantly label anyone who uses it as a moron.

That's what they did in Tennessee to get the lottery vote. We had a budget crisis in education "For The Children". The day after the lottery passed, they cut the state discretionary budget to equal aniticipated lottery revenues. Net to children: No Gain. Now they can use them again for the next "crisis".

God RI is so dumb for not voting this last year. Now we are frozen out of attracting anyone to a casino in the future. We need to get out of debt and the casino was a way of doing it. Now we are going to have to attract some businesses to our state by lowering property taxes and raising income taxes perhaps. I dunno though we have to do something

No they didn't, they came seeking freedom for THEIR religion and nobody else's. Christmas was banned in Boston by the Puritans for a while, even. Taxation? That came a little later. Stick to talking about what you know, spucky.

The first settlers came looking for religious freedom, it had nothing to do with freedom from overtaxation. Also, the 'religious freedom' they sought was basically to practice a more strict form of Christianity. Not really religious freedom at all, but the freedom to persecute those who did not follow norms determined by the leaders. It is ironic that the Massachusetts colony was founded by religious nutbags and today the state has managed to purge religious nutbags better than most other states.

As far as the casino issue, the above posters are correct that CT and RI currently get all the gambling revenue from MA residents, therefore it would make sense for Mass to build their own casinos. I do find it admirable, however, that the legislature is at least attempting to fight the trend toward government promoted gambling in attempting to raise revenues. Lotteries (which MA has a ton of) and casino revenue are 'stupid taxes' that suck money from those least able to afford it.

How lucky for us that our Governor seeks the very best solution of fiscal and social responsibility for us all. For clearly, there is no other better use of that land than a gambling house. Where people of all types come together with nothing but the joy of life on their mind.

Imagine how awful it would be if the people were creating terrible traffic jams to go to a new school, or the influx of sick and diseased were there to be a hospital. Worse yet, a sports arena with all that unauthorized wagering on the outcome of the game, who knows what unsavory scoundrels make their illicit gains from that vice!

No, we are fortunate that the best minds have come together and found the very best use of that land, a casino. Where people can come together to find their better nature and hundreds of others can find meaningful and life sustaining work that enriches their families and outlying community.

I'm so proud of the Governor and the legislature of the Commonwealth, they are shining examples of wisdom and understanding for us all.

Funny, I've always considered myself a secular humanist... I had no idea O'Reilly was attaching a negative connotation to it.

From wikipedia:

Secular humanism is a humanist philosophy that upholds reason, ethics, and justice, and specifically rejects the supernatural and the spiritual as warrants of moral reflection and decision-making. Like other types of humanism, secular humanism is a life stance focusing on the way human beings can lead good and happy lives. More specifically, secular humanism is a eupraxsophy, a non-religious life stance.

Debeo Summa Credo: Lotteries (which MA has a ton of) and casino revenue are 'stupid taxes' that suck money from those least able to afford it.

Not only that, but since they'll be getting most of their revenue from citizens of the state, all that it will really do is shuffle the money around, while the Casino owners take a large share of it.

2008-01-03 10:05:47 AM
Of course when you actually read the article there is no mention of Patrick increasing spending, just that he's including the money that would be generated by the licensing fees into the budget proposal as a way to goad lawmakers into accepting his plan. Just a tiny little difference that makes your headline dead wrong. Thanks for playing.

Maybe the Federal government should give MA the bill for the big dig. Then MA would have to legalize and tax just about everything.

secular humanism

Secularity (adjective form secular) is the state of being separate from religion.

Humanism is a broad category of ethical philosophies that affirm the dignity and worth of all people, based on the ability to determine right and wrong by appeal to universal human qualities-particularly rationality

I guess I'm a secular humanist. I can tell right from wrong without some skywizard threatening to send me to an eternal time out.

Anyone who derides "secular humanism" clearly lacks the moral fiber to make ethical decisions on their own.

What are you, a "religious moralist"??

Listen asshole, you like freedom and democracy? Would you rather be a Brittish subject? Thank my great (x10) grandfather who decided he'd had enough and marched to Concord and kicked some ass. You like those government subsidies? Thank my state for sending such a huuuuuge amount of money, per capita, to the fedgov.

You like advances in research and science? How about heart surgery? You like anathesia?

That shiat didn't happen in your state.

Say what you want about Teddy, but he didn't vote for the war in Iraq or the Patriot Act, which is probably more than you can say about any of your senators.

Hey, the plan has worked in Maryland. Between two governors (Hair Helmet (R) and Pretty Boy (D)), we've buried ourself in a hole of their own making. Now we face a November referendum titled "Slots and Casinos, Or Else".

Worse, folks like me really like the idea of slots, table games and full casinos. They're fun. But I don't like being force fed this bullshiat about its necessity for the state's budget.

Oh, I thought that we were mocking former governors, or did you think that Mitt was still our governor? You're right though, Florida does suck. There's a reason that you're the only state that has its own tag. Hell, even Texas doesn't have a tag.

But you're right, you do have nice weather, you must be proud of that accomplishment.

Headso: what the term means and how it is applied in MA

Secular humanism is a belief system based on denying anything not factually-based.

The far left in this country could almost be accused of making it a state religion.

This makes them an object of sport for the far right--war on Christmas and so forth, thus O'Reilly enjoys the term..

In Cambridge, MA, for example, they have Christmas decorations, twinkly lights that they hang over the streets in the early winter, but they never call them that. These lights show dancing figures. Holly, evergreen trees, menorahs, Santas, candy canes and anything else that anyone has ever objected to are left off. Camtabridgians do not believe in freedom of religion, they believe in freedom from religion--which I think is just as religious as anything else.

How about just leaving people alone, as long as they don't do it in the street and scare the horses?

My .02
There is no way that the 2 Connecticut Casinos (Mohegan and Foxwoods) are going to allow a 3rd Casino in the market. They have very very deep pockets and will fight just as hard as they did in RI to make sure that another casino dosen't kill the goose that cranks out the golden eggs every quarter.

Besides, I take great pleasure out of the fact that the tribes are making boatloads of money off of stupid, bandwagon Massholes who cover their minivans with Patriots and Red Sox bumper stickers and drive down to CT to gamble away their mortgage payments.

//Just a bitter NY sports fan living in CT
