Nude snapper says models are stupid and boring

BERLIN (Reuters) - Photographer Helmut Newton, famed for his portraits of beautiful naked women, said he had met far too many stupid models in his career.
Newton, 82, has courted controversy with his portrayals of sexual violence, sado-masochism and fetishism.

But the renowned photographer told Germany's Stern magazine on Wednesday that working with beautiful women had often been boring and tiresome.

"Either they are so dumb that they can only sit there silently staring straight ahead with vacant looks on their faces, or they get on my nerves because they can't stop blabbering," said Newton, an Australian who lives in Berlin.

"And then there are those who believe they have to talk about important issues," he added. "Those are the worst of all."

Newton said he had become so bored that he had nothing to add to memoirs which tell the story of his life until 1982.

"What could I have written about the last 20 years? That I met an awful lot of incredibly boring Hollywood bimbos, that I earn a bit more money now and that I only fly first class," he said. "Not much more has happened."

Newton opened an exhibition in Berlin two years ago featuring photographs of big-name models in various states of undress and in poses not normally seen on the catwalk.

Newton was born into a prominent Jewish family in Berlin but fled Nazi Germany in 1938.

Many critics, including leading feminists, have slammed aspects of his work which depict women bound and gagged or wearing leg irons. But fans call his photographs erotic masterpieces.

In the Stern interview Newton said he was disliked the word erotic.

"I hate all the talk about erotic," he said. "Let's talk about sex. Then I know what is meant."

Hey buddy quit complaining. You take pictures of naked girls for a living. There's only abot 60 million guys who would gladly take your job and never ever mention the intelligence of the models. So their stupid so what. It wouldn't be a very fair world if all the pretty girls got all the brains too.

seriously, what a catch-22. Hes smart enough to make a career out of naked beautiful women, only to find out that the only beautiful women who become models are the girls who cant hold a conversation with a houseplant. Someday I hope for the chance to become as jaded as this guy.

Models don't ever fit the stereotype of being thick and boring even though all they are paid to do is stand around and look nice. I'm sure that a lot of models have interesting and well-informed opinions on myriad subjects, and are entertaining to listen to.

My job, running a multi-billion dollar defense contracting firm, gets boring too. However, nude models don't show up in my office all that often. This guy needs some perspective.

Ok I take pictures of nude women al the time, I am currently doing a nude calendar for a few clubs in Houston. First of all it does get boring after a while and seeing women nude really stops doing anything for you after about the first ten minutes anyway...I have found myself more turned on watching them get dressed again in their street clothes. As far as models there is a great range of personality types from boring to very fun..it also depends on how comfortable you can make them during the process. I have photographed medical students working their way through college by dancing at men's clubs and others who have a hard time spelling their own names. It really varies. Sorry to ruin anyone fantasies but it's work just like anything else....I mean it beats flipping burgers, but I still have to motivate myself sometimes to even show up at a shoot. As far as sex on shoots, never happens...too many people around anyway...sometimes in very rare instances you might get lucky after the shoot.

I know few of you will believe me, but a professional photographer has different things on his mind besides ogling the model. He's much too busy with his camera, lights, poses, and photography to think of much else.

Cripes- the guy's over 80- probably seen it all, done it all- I'd probably be bored at that age, too. I'm not a big fan of Newton, but I think he did some good work with Cindy Crawford for Playboy. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.

Old Helmut may not want to talk about what's erotic, but his photos are fantastic! The one above that Cubicle-slave posted is erotic as hell to me. 'Scuse me, I'm going to go touch inappropriate places on myself.

Or loading and unloading, dealing with malfuntioning equipment, making sure you have enough batteries, film, storage.....working under time constraints when shooting on location. Dealing with with the public who are always interested in oogling. Worring wether the models will show up...getting releases signed. Dealing with makeup artists and prima donna models......the list goes on trust me......
