A few days ago, my police department issued a reverse 911 call reminding citizens it's a crime to fire a gun in celebration of the new year. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry after the message played.

I thought it was the horizontal velocity that kills people.

Dumbasses don't shoot strait up. They shoot at a 45 degree angle, which is why the bullet always hits someone three blocks away.

So while the downward velocity alone wouldn't be fatal, it's still going fast enough horizontally to kill someone.

dude, it is Tucson. Would make a guess that 1/10 of this city is illegal and another 15-25% being from some latin country. this totally doesn't surprise me. last night, i heard a ton of gunshots in my neighborhood. cops couldn't stop it even if they tried.

as for the bullet theory, mythbuster did do an episode, and both people on this thread are right. if you fire a bullet at
EXACTLY 90 deg. to the surface, it will lose ballistic trajectory and will not kill you if it hits you. this is due to the limited terminal velocity of a tumbling bullet which is about 145 mph. however, if you deviate even slightly from 90 degs., you can easily kill someone since the bullet maintains its speed when it returns to earth.

so don't fire your god damn guns in the air unless you are out in the middle of no-where.

It's not quite as simple as that. The shape of the bullet is a big factor as well how much spin is imparted.

The minimum age of ownership of guns needs to be increased as there are too many mentally underdeveloped people getting ahold of guns.

If law abiding citizens aren't allowed to shoot guns into the air, then only criminals will be shooting into the air. Or if only this young girl or someone in her family was armed, they could have possibly prevented this from happening. Or something like that.

There's nothing really wrong with celebratory gun fire. You just need to make sure you're pointing the firearm in a safe direction. The safest direction being DOWN.

Fark, I was told that in boy scouts 30 years ago just how to shoot a farking bird or a deer. And I don't even hunt anymore. That goes for anything. I'm not hunting humans.

1) Lethal bullet shot straight up in the air? Busted.

2) Lethal bullet shot at an angle? Plausible.

3) Victims of lethal bullets shot at an angle? Confirmed.

Even from firing at 45 degree angle to travel full range and then go through roof and ceiling i dont think it can be done. Dont really know. Just my opinion.
