Magorn, what irony trolls don't realize is that Reality Bites is not the authority on irony.

There's situational irony, socratic irnoy, etc etc.

Winning the lottery and dying the next day is very ironic, just not in the sense your link describes.

hardinparamedic: Thats more than I can say for half you monitor jockies.

And you've been on Fark how long? Surely by now you know how the game is played.

I'm sure your sensibilities have left nothing but a trail of respectful and supportive comments in previous tragic threads. Or is it just not so funny now that the shoe is on the other foot?

who is dumber, the jackasses who announce that the headline would be more ironic if the crash victims needed rescue, on top of thirty other similar announcements, or mud?

Freak: hardinparamedic: I knew all three people on that chopper, you douchebags.

Are you getting a kick out of this?

I think this rather succinctly sums up the situation.

I used to know a guy that owned a helicopter and he walked into the tail rotor. now we just call him chuck.

Irony

3 a (1): incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result

Subby is looking at 3a(1). The problem with irony is that it is subjective. Is the expected result of a helicopter search and rescue mission that the helicopter would crash? No, unless you are a pessimist. So, I guess, in a way, it is ironic. But not in the way most people would expect.

Alanis's song does have some irony. Rain on a wedding day is not really ironic, unless you are the bride, because the bride doesn't expect rain on her perfect day. And under what circumstances would finding 10,000 spoons be expected? Maybe in a spoon factory. But why would you look for a knife in a spoon factory (wouldn't that also be ironic)? The same is true for a fly in Chardonnay. If you are paying good money for wine in what is likely a fancy restaurant, you don't expect to see a fly.

Ironic is not the same as funny. I don't think anybody has made fun of this tragedy. We've just been arguing over whether it is ironic

"The use of words expressing something other than their lit-er-al intention.
Now THAT . . . is . . . irony!"

Well, actually, since a corpse begins to lose body heat at the moment of death, and we can assume that her corpse has been cooling for at least 24 hours, then if we subtract...

oh wait...

That was in poor taste, wasn't it?
And I'd never want to offend anyone, anywhere, under any circumstance, ever.

Irony is wasted on the stupid.

WhatHeSaid: Three people die in a helicopter crash and the only thing Farker's are worried about is whether, or not the Ironic tag was used properly....ah Fark.

More than three people died this morning while I was brushing my teeth, should I care about them too?

Irony as defined by the dictionary is not at all humorous or applicable to most situations. Just embrace the funnier and more common morrisett irony and quit biatching about it you nerds.

Not very ironic. Sad though.

CravenMorehead: It would have been ironic if the search helicopter had killed the guy it was looking for. Or perhaps if the search and rescue party in the helicopter went missing and was found by the guy they were looking for. Now that would be really ironic. Otherwise not so much.

This.

Is it a type of irony when an unexpected result occurs, opposite of the intent of the original effort? Despite one's best efforts, the opposite effect occurs.

What about when through the very act of trying so hard to do the right thing, that the wrong thing actually happens? Because of one's extreme efforts with best intentions, the opposite effect occurs.

Are either of these irony? Are both? If not, what are they considered? (Not just "unfortunate" or "bummer" - there must be a literary term or aphorism.

Aw c'mon, it's Fark. This is where EVERYTHING is fodder for inappropriate, tasteless humor. That's what intellectuals do to help keep society moving. You gotta laugh at things, man, it's how you get past them.

Plus, it's edgy! C'mon, be edgy with everyone else! It's the edgiest!
