what do you want to bet illegal drugs of some sort are involved in this?

2001-08-01 10:15:56 AM
Acetonic: I'll bet that they weren't. It was hot as hell up there yesterday, and the guy was something like 335 pounds - not a small character, and certainly not one well adapted to dealing with the heat. Add to that his pride as a professional athlete ("No coach, I'm fine, just a little warm..."), and it's a nasty recipe. Poor guy probably just wanted to do a good job for himself and his team, and paid the price.

I do, however, say that something is seriously wrong with the team's trainers. How could they not notice that he was having serious trouble? Hmmmmm.

It's all they're talking about on the local radio station this morning (I live in Minnesota). I'm not much of a football fan, but I feel bad for this guy's family and teammates. My condolences to those who knew him!

Anyone know if this guy had a contract and if so will the Vikings pay out through the end of the contract?

I agree with Slippy heads better roll over this one. No sport is important enough to lose you life in practice.

Pro trainers should be better than this - I played college football in Canada, and our trainers NEVER would have let us fall into the situation Stringer did. Everything we sweated off, we had to drink back on, and water breaks were scheduled every 10 minutes.

The trainers farked up. You've gotta see past the "No coach, I'm fine" and get the guy some help.

2001-08-01 12:08:56 PM
Hey Vox8, are you implying that there are some sports that are important enough to lose your life during a real game?

2001-08-01 12:25:16 PM
Matty: Exactly my point. Yeah, it's a big-money business and these guys are paid to produce - they're paid very well to sweat their asses off and work hard. But the trainers are also probably rather well paid to look after these players and make sure that they're able to perform. Oh yeah, they're also paid to make sure that they do not die.

How come this is such a big deal when something like 30 high school football players were killed in practice and games last year?

2001-08-01 12:53:35 PM
USA Today mentioned, "Stringer vomited at least three times during Tuesday morning's practice but didn't summon a trainer until the drills had ended." The picture beside the article looks like he's getting ready to heave again. Someone should have said/done something. I can smell a lawsuit bigger than the guy who got hit in the eye by the ref.

Poor Stringer, heat stroke is a horrible way to die.My condolences to his folks and friends.

I'm amazed this doesn't happen more often. Probably less likely now since players tend to stay in shape year round, but still with 325+ being normal now its surprising. 20 years ago this would not have shocked me a bit. Guys would come to camp 25+ lbs over weight and eo the first workouts they had done since the end of the last season.

I hate when that happens.

Heh.

I love you, Mme. Mersault.

It's not just the trainers at fault but the man himself. If you're in a lot of heat and you're doing a lot of activity, your word for the day will be "fluids" and lots of them. I can't tell you how lucky I am to be alive with how many times I've done pretty stupid things with getting heat stroke. I would have done the same probably. Poor guy. : / Condolences to his family and friends and fans.

Damm machos. Of course, I am one too and would probably have ended up the same...but then again, I'm smart enough not to play a sport where your pads are as heavy as you are. Oh well. Condolences to his family. My advice: marry a plumber next.

Terribly unfortunate for the man's family and friends. It's hard to fathom why some seem to be somewhat pleased that this happened. What kind of farking human beings are you? It doesn't matter if you like or dislike the man's occupation, at least he had a job and was trying to do it to the best of his ability, which is probably a lot more than some of you farks ever did. I played football, a decision I've come to regret over the years because of the physical toll it took on me, but I loved the game and played it as hard as I could. I can guarantee you this, though, nobody on the football field ever found any joy in the death of someone who sits around typing on a computer keyboard all day. Is it jealousy of the success of pro athletes that makes you hate them so much that you are glad when one of them dies? If so, I'm sorry for the damage you are doing to your immortal soul.

BTW, football was originally meant to be played in the fall of the year when the temp. and humidity were a lot lower. Economic factors have led to the extension of the season to the point that it begins far too early, forcing the participants into the dangerous situation of strenuous exertion during extreme conditions. All for someone else's entertainment.

Some of the comments in here are totally uncalled for. One less criminal off the streets? Good? Why? I know NFL players have been in the news a lot lately, but don't judge all of the players by the criminal ones.

I seriously feel sorry for both of you farkers. Get some help.

AMEN Visualingo and Jenius53. this was just a shiatty accident that, although it might have been avoided if they knew something was going to happen, just happened. just like when my mom was making a left hand turn, a bee flew in the window, freaked her out(she's alergic), messed up her turn, and another car slammed right into her. almost killing her.

just a really really shiatty accident.

you can count me in on the condolences to the family and friends.

This dude died cos he's too damn big to be running around in that kind of heat, even if he was fully naked, let alone with that armour crap on. It sucks that the organisation didn't identify him and others his size as being at risk, and take special precautions.
