Not to worry, the commies assure us that the air will be clean for the Olympics.

At least their smog is white ... not like that nasty brown goo that floats over L.A.

My Chinese girlfriend loves American air. She tells me real horror stories about the air in China.

2007-12-28 09:55:30 PM
DO NOT WANT

2007-12-28 10:08:31 PM
Damn, L.A. looks pristine in comparison.

2007-12-28 10:09:51 PM
Well what the hell can they do? They're already riding bicycles!

2007-12-28 10:09:55 PM
I spent the entire summer in China.

BULL SHIAT.

It literally took over 3 weeks of being there before I actually saw the sun or any blue sky through the smog.

Forget the stairs, swim up the smog to your third floor apartment.

Finally a country that truly embraces deregulation.

Maybe they should make toys out of it and import it to the U.S.

Sorry, that's export.

Ah, reminds me of living in the good ol' Inland Empire.

This doesn't bother them at all. Don't you know that Chinamen are 15% lead?

When I work in Beijing, my eyes are always red. I have to use eye drops all day long. My buggers are black. It is gross. In all the cities where I have visited, Beijing is the worst for air pollution.

2007-12-28 10:17:07 PM
With regard to the greenhouse gas emissions and China's contribution, are we just taking their word for how much they pollute? It seems like they are doing way more than anyone else as I've seen plenty of pictures of the horrid levels of air pollution in China.

The concentration levels aren't even close, though. In the article's pic, you can barely see a building that's only a few hundred meters away. Last time I've seen visibility that poor here was due to the a giant fog rolling in from Santa Monica.

This is what happens when all those pesky environmentalists are thrown in jail when they protest what's going on.

Republican Americans are envious, as always, at China's remarkable lack of hippies.

I spent two weeks in China. Not long enough to get used to it. Did you know they actually count the number of days that you can see the sky? The call them "blue sky days" (not too creative). The government loves to brag about the number of them.

2007-12-28 10:19:45 PM
Good thing we exempted them from Kyoto...

2007-12-28 10:21:22 PM
Thick coal smog? Don't worry, this also happened in London once. Only 12,000 people died.

Well the localized particulate matter is not as much of a global concern as the CO2 emissions.

China has already exceeded the US in greenhouse gas emissions, or soon will. But they're quick to point out that they have 6x the population, and thus per capita are little environmental angels relative to the US.

Thank God that China signed the Kyoto Protocol or all this pollution would really be a problem.

LOL.

Beijingers.

The issues related to China coming out onto the world stage are much too numerous, much too complex, and much too serious for me to attempt to discuss in a Fark thread. Nighty-night.

I wonder if that little black kid knows he's a fark deity.

It may actually not be smog. This may just be what happens when a quarter of a trillion people exhale in a confined space.

soy_bomb: Thank God that China signed the Kyoto Protocol or all this pollution would really be a problem.

Yup, nothing to see there, move along.

China is pollution capital. Are there cancer villages producing cheap shiat for consumers anywhere else?

What athletes are going to want to go compete in a city with air quality that is that poor. I wonder what the over/under will be on how many Olympic athletes will drop dead during the events.

As much as I would want to represent my country and win a gold medal, I would be passing on the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

2007-12-28 10:31:14 PM
i can't wait to see those olympic runners coughing up black

Apparently, "Bagdad Bob" is now working for the Chinese government.

/"There is no presence of air pollution in the city of Baghdad...I mean Beijing."

I think I read somewhere that 25 percent of the air pollution in San Francisco blew over here from China. So I'm looking forward to breathing that stuff.

Gyrfalcon: It may actually not be smog. This may just be what happens when a quarter of a trillion people exhale in a confined space.

1/4 of a trillion is 250,000,000,000
China's population is 1,300,000,000

Fail

They've got plenty of time to clean it up before the Olympics. After all the Beijing Olympics aren't until **checks calendar** Holy Shiat! Is it the coming summer? They're doomed! Doomed I say!

Methinks an "Official Blue Sky Day" is one where someone, for an instant, can see blue sky.

And that person is probably in an aircraft....

/Odd - I wonder why I don't automatically trust the Chinese government?
//Or any government, for that matter...

In literature, we call this "hyperbole." It is used for comic exaggeration, or ironic commentary. As in overstating a number for sarcastic effect. Try not to be so literal, you will enjoy life a great deal more.

This is the mark of a simple person with a limited imagination.

Cheer up, bucko, this is great compared to what it's gonna be in another year!

I lived in China for over a year, so I'm getting a hacking cough out of these replies.

Seriously. The only way to tell the difference between a sunny day and a cloudy day in northern China is to look straight up into the sky. If you see a little circle of blue, it was sunny.

Southern China isn't as bad as the north, although the rivers still run neon green like Chicago relish.
