Fortunately the Greeks had a saying for just this moment: post hoc ergo propter hoc. For those of you who don't speak Roman, that means "after moneyhat, therefore because of moneyhat."

I think it's important to note that the multiple SKU strategy wasn't #1 on the list- it was the RROD problem.

Sony's not teh doomd because the PS3 isn't selling so hot right now. It's still got a ways to go before it's widely adopted, but it will get there- and it's got a few great games right now.

In the meantime, though, content with my Wii and 360, thanks.

Granted, McD's fries are marginally better, but that's very much offset by the FAR FAR superior sandwich quality at Wendy's.

Wendy's!?!?! What kind of dumbass freak would eat a SQUARE hamburger?

You see, if you're really willing to put in the effort, you can be an intolerant, insulting, moronic asshole about absolutely anything! It's an abstract skill, really, like "management".

Did the article mention the red PS2 guitars being placed in the Wii Guitar Hero III boxes? I heard that was a "Walmart only" issue.

I own a PS2, a GameCube, and a GBA.

But most of my gaming is done using emulators to play old-school games - Sega Genesis, NES, and SNES.

So I am really getting a kick out of these replies !

Get yourself a GP2X(pop). I've had mine for 2 years now and I still play it constantly. There's emulators for just about every system up to the 16 bit generation. They're getting closer and closer to a playable PS1 emulator but it's still kinda wonky at the moment.

I got have a Wii and a PS3 and the PS3 is definitely the better value for me for the hardware. You have to buy a charging station and batteries along with a WiFi adapter for the Wii just to get it to do what the PS3 does naturally. There's also the matter of the proprietary component cable vs. my $3 HDMI cable for the PS3. Considering too that my PS3 is also a BluRay player and a Ubuntu media station, the Wii is a pretty much just a "meh" party console. There's Zelda, but not much more to hold the interest of a hardcore gamer.

My biggest gripe with the Wii though is that it is region locked. It doesn't make much sense when the DS is region free. I've got to plonk down another $250 just to play my Japanese language games. I rather have a 360 instead now and be playing some of their limited term exclusives.

1. Put snakes on plane, I agree with you that it would be great if the wiimotes came with rechargeable batteries and a charging station, but the WiFi adapter is built in already. I love playing my 360 as well but I feel it's ridiculous that Microsoft charges as much as they do for their wireless NIC.

It's not necessary for everyone, but the DS/Wii WiFi won't work with some wireless stations including some common DSL gateways. nintendowifi.com has the compatibility list somewhere. The PS3 uses standard 802.11b/g so it doesn't have that issue AFAIK.

Evil Otto: I for one am gratified to see that Sony's hubris is FINALLY biting them in the ass. "Buy our product, you ungrateful wretches" is not a good marketing strategy, I don't care who you are.

Also, if I hear one more GameStop drone insist that the PS3 isn't expensive ENOUGH... well let's just say my lawyer will have to put together a justifiable homicide defense in a hurry.

/and the M.E. will have to retrieve parts of the corpse from three states
//I don't care how many processors it has or how many pixels per second it pushes, if people have to mortgage their house to buy one, you're doing it wrong

In sony's defense the PS3 is really cool but they did fark up by making it cost so much, they should have made the blu ray an option and kept the pp of the PS3 down to $300 or so.

Same thing with my Sony PSP, I only own 2 games for it (Death JR and FF Tactics) but damn I love my copy of homebrew. I have a 1.1 firmware one, so it's been hacked since the day I got it.

NES, SNES work great. Haven't found a working Genesis / N64 emulator yet... but then I haven't been looking lately.

Nah. IMO what they should've done is not get wrapped up in tossing in features from other consoles or reacting to PR issues (e.g. the boomerang controller, multiple SKUs, motion tracking). If they had a single focus the PS3 would be much cheaper by now.

I found a Wii on Boxing Day (Canada's post-Christmas clearance sale day) store bundled with Mario Galaxy, Wii Play (plus Wiimote), and an extra nun chuck for $400 (regular $290 CAD for system by itself). It was pricey, but I was gonna get Mario Galaxy and a second controller set eventually, so it was worth it. Plus I had a 6 month no payment coupon, so I should be able to get it paid off with little problems.

HulkHands: Generally, Gamestop is one of the highest contributors to sprall thanks to their small employee numbers. It's also one of the worst options to buy and sell your video games at.

I never got how they remained in business after CD/DVD media became popular. Cartridges could be used over and over again because they're tough. With disc media, it was more fragile and nearly every disc gotten used has some fingerprints on it and plenty of superficial scratches. On top of that the 'Greatest Hits' line of PS2 games made getting a library of the damn things easy as hell if you were willing to wait long enough. Gamestop just seems to be a social place for little kids hang out to get ripped off and I don't see how that really works out to be anything better than crap.

HereNorThere: /The only one I regret is the Dreamcast

I don't. I still have mine and it rocks for what it is. I still dig it out occasionally to play Street Fighter Alpha 3 and such. Also, it's a pirate's best console if you wanted games for it but didn't want any strange processes to burning them and playing them right afterwards.

My apologies for labeling whatever the new ps3 game is called "dude tomb raider"

I very rarely call anything by its proper name. I really wasnt dismissing it. The heavenly sword game and "DTR" or whatever looks very cool. I very close to buying a ps3 but after the poor port reviews and lack of more than a handleful or interesting exculsives and very few on there way. ( may still buy one if MGS plays the way it looks).

if compare game line ups and graphics
Xbox 360 has it now and for at least another year probably 2.

I do not have any brand loyalty. I just like games.
I have owned almost every us released system from intellivision and collecovision to Turbo graphics16 and 3d0 building my own pcs to xbox 360.

The only one missing were Atari Jaguar, Virtual boy and ps3.

also HD-DVD is Better than blue ray.
SOny keeps telling everyone just wait we will have good games and just wait blue ray will have net connectivity and we will use the 100 gigs.

But Xbox360 and HDDVD have all the good stuff now, and I'm sure they are working on whats next.

Anyway have a good new years, I'm going to play crackdown (that I got for $9 on ebay) before the wife gets home.

If it wasn't for the RROD and all the Sony marekting/brainwashing at the beginning of this console war the 360 would've been competing head to head with the Wii in terms of month to month sales.

As of right now FACT...

The 360 is easier to develop for and has all the same specs as the PS3 except for Blue Ray and the split 512 RAM. Same flippin machines. The only thing Sony can do potentially that the 360 probably cannot do is put an 80 hour game on one disc. The only companies that are willing to do that right now are companies like Konami, Squeenix, and other high rolling Japanese companies that are willing to put three to four years in development time and money to make a game that large. Which begs the question...If the PS3 attachment rate is low who will continue to fund these type of games?

I don't know what world you're living in, but in my world extra PS3 controllers are way more than $20 each. Even at $20 each that's $60 more to the total price, if you want to compare squarely.

So that's $459 compared to Wii's $363.

And i'm willing to bet it's much more than that. I bet the controllers are closer to Xbox 360's $40-$50 each.

Don't forget that those who have recently or already bought a PS3 and plan to buy 4 controllers will 'have' to buy four MORE controllers this spring, when they finally release the Dualshock 3 with rumble for the PS3.

Yes, that thing they said was impossible with their motion sensing controllers.

Jonny Wilkinson: servlet: Jonny Wilkinson:
Yeah, the PS3 is a good deal for what you get. I think the problem is people are looking to buy a video game console. All the extra stuff it does isn't important really. On paper, it looks good, but when people are in the store, they want something that will play games and that's really about it.

Likewise, someone who's looking for a bluray player isn't shopping in the video game section, no matter how good the player in the PS3 is. They'll be over in the home theater section. That's, IMO, the PS3's biggest failing. It tries to be far more than a video game machine, but there's no market for that right now. People that don't want a video game console AND a bluray player are stuck feeling like they've spent extra money on something they don't want/need. And that's hard to do when there are far less expensive options sitting right down the aisle.

I understand where you are coming from, and it may be true for a lot of people. However, Playstation was clearly marketing to the population with nice HD TV's (like me). I am dying to get my hands on a Blue-Ray player, and I would also like a new gaming system. Top that off with the PS3 being the only system able to play HD games and we have ouselves a winner. Why would I buy such an expensive TV, if all I could use it for was to watch the handful of HD channels on TV? Clearly, Playstaion is marketing to the more tech savvy and more well off crowd. I believe this will work for them in the longrun.
I will admit that the PS3 does not have as many interesting titles as the XBOX, but I think that will change soon. I am waiting for this to actually buy one.

\Not a big Playstation fan
\\Never owned a PS2
\\\The XBOX was clearly a much better system, which is why I bought it
\\\\The opposite is true here

Hope the whole recession thing isn't too big a shock for you. I'd hate to have to shoot you while you come to try and steal my food.

Lumbar Puncture:
...The hardware is marginally better on the PS3. It also comes at a cost of being harder to develop for and having less flexibility.

Also, you know better hardware doesn't = better video game console.

The Dreamcast had a lot of advantages the PS2 didn't have. The Xbox was a far better machine then the PS2. The PS2 is still the most dominant console, all because of the software. Also because at one point it was the most cost effective to develop for.

The 360 is easier to develop for than the PS3, plus has a great software attachment rate.

And you say the PS3 is harder to develop for because you are a game dev, or because you read tech blogs over and over again? I have rad plenty of comments from devs that state the exact opposite. Hell at my work, we have a$$hat$ who complain and moan because there are things they can't figure out how to do in our editing software, yet I find ways to get it done. Hmmm, sounds like a few PS devs are shiatty at their job.

WHO GIVES A FARK IF PS3 IS TOUGHER TO PROGRAM FOR. BMWs are tougher to work on than a honda, does that make them a worse car.

Jeez this console flame wars are SO STUPID. If you honestly think you are going to change someone's decision to buy a video game by making snarky comments in an INTERNET FORUM, your sense of importance in this world is way over inflated.
