I dunno. Back in the seventies I owned a hot pink Lurex suit with superwide lapels, bell-bottoms, and a double breasted jacket & vest. The overall effect wasn't even remotely gay - indeed, no self-respecting gay man would have been caught dead in a ditch wearing the damn thing. But since I am neither, I wore it with pride. If you think Hello Kitty doesn't appeal to the male market, then you haven't been in Japan. Strange, strange fashion sense sometimes over there...

Please, net-speak is one thing, but just using bad English on purpose just degrades us all (/rant) )

Back on the topic. Japan is an entirely different place, anything that is cute is in enormous demand there. In fact Disney gets more money from their classic cartoon characters in Japan than in the USA. There is a reason their park in Tokyo is their biggest and most profitable, it is CRAZY there.

Guys may just go for a "hello Kitty" line if it is marketed correctly.

To give you a picture of how different Japan is from the USA culture wise, when Apple aired those "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC commercials in Japan, their sales ground to a halt, and the people thought the adds were from PC companies. They see the Mac guy as a worthless slacker who would not do anything in life and would bring dishonor to their family, and the PC guy as an upstanding businessman who will do good work and be dependable, square or not.

They have a different mindset, and cute things are popular beyond belief, possibly as a counterpart to the extreme squareness of the working day, a way of compensating for the very bland and efficient workday.

But that last part is just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I think a few of you were looking for this...

i167.photobucket.com

on a side note that perhap I shouldn't admit but I'm a grown male and I own ONE hello kitty product. It was a birthday gift from a girl (beautiful ska/punk redhead) I had a crush on in highschool...so I kept it. I never would had activly sought it out on my own and I used to have it hanging from my rearview mirror in my car till another one of my friends said that my car would confuse people now as to what gender the owner was..messy...empty beer cans in the back (that I drink many hours prior to driving at friend's houses then just I am polite enough to take my own trash but then too lazy to take them outof the backseat of the car..I can't stand drunk drivers) random heavy metal and gun stickers on the back but then this... a hello kitty doll dangaling near the driver's seat. The girl said she thought I'd like it since I like cats (I do..but typically more masculine ones..ie lions, tigers cheetahs, oscelots etc) and a punk outfit on since at that time I was heavily involved in the punk music scene. It now sits on my bedroom dresser.

hello kity is made to look very cute and feminine this has alway been it's appeal Japan has a cute fetish that runs deep..I once had a study in collge on this. straight men don't want to be 'cute' (perhap outside of being babyface boyish to get chicks) thus it will never appeal to a broad (I believe outside of japan) male audience. I guess this is just another place markters are thinking with the 'possiblity' of their wallets and not their minds.

DaShredda

Nobody was acting like you describe. Your whiny biatch persecution act fails.

Santa's Knee

Nah, I'm not Henry Higgins, but he did have a few good points. I think the goal is to wind up with a group of people not like Higgins, but like Eliza at the end of the story.

I rather like the Apostrophe Protection Society's method

Their Website (new window)

They drop courteous letters in the mail to businesses who misuse apostrophes on their signs.

Much more civil, less like Grammar Nazi's, and more like Grammar Monks, coughing slightly when a horrible error is made.

But at some point it just gets so unorganized that it is 4chan insanity, where it's like listening to cavemen grunt and draw pictures on cave walls at each other.

LOL I didn't read their mission statement at the bottom, it is worht posting.

"We are aware of the way the English language is evolving during use, and do not intend any direct criticism of those who have made the mistakes above. We are just reminding all writers of English text, whether on notices or in documents of any type, of the correct usage of the apostrophe should you wish to put right mistakes you may have inadvertently made."

Now is how it's done. Leave it to the British to do things politely.

I'm an 8.9 on Hot or Not, Ivy League grad, Mensa member, can bench/squat/leg press over 1200 lbs. I've had lunch with the secretary of defense, and an MBA from the top school in the country. I live in a Buckhead high rise, drive a Beemer convertible. I've been in 14 major motion pictures, in Jezebel's Best dressed and I LOVE Hello Kitty!

Yes it's real

It's real, but it's not much for vibrating. The motor is weak. Got it as a birthday present. Not very good for muscle cramps at all. I bought a similarly-structured vibrator at the Osaka airport and it had a much stronger motor.

The Japanese seem to sell vibrators all over the place. Do you suppose Japanese women enjoy flying more than the rest of us?

The teddy bear on said device is disturbing. Kinda like that other bear popular on Fark.

Gives it a weird Pez dispenser look.

/OK, maybe Darth Pink is more disturbing ...
//Especially if that was his/her/its lightsaber.

As the local news said this evening, "This can only end in disaster..."
